Chelsea needed the help of their more senior players to make it through against Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup quarter-final, with Alvaro Morata striking deep into stoppage time to secure a place in the semi-finals.
Antonio Conte heavily rotated his side for the visit of the Cherries, with Danny Drinkwater, Kennedy, Michy Batshuayi, Willy Caballero and 17-year-old Ethan Ampadu all given their chance to impress.
This tactic seemed to have paid off when Chelsea stormed into a 1-0 lead courtesy of Willian’s tap-in, after a lovely flowing move involving Kenedy and Ces cFabregas. However, despite only holding a 1-0 lead, Chelsea took their foot off the gas and allowed Bournemouth to dominate possession, failing to close down the ball or even string a few passes together as the much-changed side struggled to find any rhythm.
The second-half brought about the same willingness to concede possession, and in all honesty, nobody was surprised when Dan Gosling curled home an equaliser with just seconds left to play. But to Chelsea’s credit, they realised the error of their ways and straight from kick-off, they mounted an attack that ended with Morata poking home the winning goal.
Chelsea will now play Arsenal in a two-legged semi-final to see who will face either Bristol City or Manchester City in the final of the Carabao Cup.
Here are my ratings for the Chelsea players after the win over the Cherries:
