Chelsea and Manchester United have reportedly sent scouts to watch Philipp Max of Augsburg ahead of a possible move in the January transfer window, according to the Daily Mail.
Max has been outstanding for Augsburg this Bundesliga season, playing in all games so far in the campaign, and playing 90 minutes in all but one match, in which he scored in a 2-1 win.
He is a left back, a position which former Chelsea boss José Mourinho needs sorting out with his first choice left back being Ashley Young and Luke Shaw looking like he is on the way out of Old Trafford.
However, both clubs have also been linked with a move for Juventus wantaway left-back Alex Sandro, but for that deal to happen the buying club would have to break the world record transfer fee for a defender, with the Old Lady valuing him at £61m.
So Philipp Max is seen as a cheaper alternative, at a still quite youthful age of 24, and showing what he is capable of in Germany, so would be a very decent buy if either the Blues or the Red Devils got his signature.
Augsburg are doing very well this season, sitting in 9th place, just two points off the Champions League spots and with a game in hand on 4th placed Borussia Dortmund, so could leapfrog them into the Champions League places. A German Burnley, so to speak.
Max has been crucial in getting FC Augsburg where they are, so if either Chelsea or Manchester United got him to come to England, they would be getting a very good left back definitely.
