Andy Cole has put two Manchester United players at fault for Bristol City’s shock win in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.
Korey Smith scored the winner in added time to make it an historic night for Bristol, but one of utter humiliation and frustration for Man United.
Cole blamed young midfielder Scott McTominay and Argentinian centre-back Marcos Rojo for making it too easy for Bristol to score late on and secure themselves a place in the semi-finals of the tournament, where they will face Manchester City.
“If you look at players not going with their runners,” Cole said on Football on 5: The Carabao Cup.
“If you look at the young boy in midfield, McTominay, he gets caught watching the ball.
“But for me Marcos Rojo can move over and jog over, pick him up and United won’t let him in that position.”
United are the holders of the trophy, and counted it as significant last season. That’s correct, it’s one of four proper trophies available to clubs, and it would be ridiculous to say United won’t care that they’ve been knocked out.
More and more recently, big clubs are taking the Carabao Cup seriously, knowing silverware is limited and it’s arguably the easiest competition to win. Look at the three others clubs in the semis apart from Bristol: Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City.
United should be alongside those three clubs. It was a terrible performance overall, but, as Cole points out, individual errors, too, late on in the game.
As the Premier League side, it’s United who should be concentrated and at 100% for the whole game, capitalising on mistakes from the lower-league opposition, but instead, it was the other way round and Jose Mourinho and his players have many questions to answer for.
