Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is reportedly trying to entice Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane to switch the Bernabeu for Old Trafford.
Mourinho managed the talented Frenchman back during his days in the Spanish capital and Varane rates the Portuguese manager highly.
Jose’s interest in yet another centre-back seems a little far-fetched but after reportedly being told to sell before buying by the United board, perhaps there is room for Raphael yet.
The Red Devils have Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones, Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling in their ranks as the club’s senior centre-backs but may be the boss is thinking of moving some of them on.
There were rumours of Mourinho’s loss of patience towards the defender’s injury proneness, particularly Englishmen Jones and Smalling.
According to Don Balon, Varane is willing to listen to what Jose has to say and it seems as though the former Chelsea manager has promised him first team football.
There are reports that Raphael is unhappy with how Real Madrid values him and so the United manager’s promise may be tempting.
Madrid’s unusual and disappointing start to the season may also tip the Frenchman towards jumping the boat before it sinks, so to speak.
With rumours of unrest in the club’s midst, some claim that Zinedine Zidane’s days are numbered and perhaps Varane is sick of the turbulence.
Should the centre-back decide to switch to Old Trafford, fans may be correct in their concerns of what this means for Mourinho’s own buys in Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof.
