Marcus Rashford has encouraged his Manchester United teammates to make a quick start against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.
Jose Mourinho’s men fell behind against Newcastle United early on last weekend after making a sluggish start but eventually recovered to claim an emphatic 4-1 win.
Their home record in the Premier League this season still stands at 100%, with Dwight Gayle the only visiting player to beat David de Gea since April.
And Rashford, speaking to the club’s official website, has stressed the importance of making a ruthless start against Chris Hughton’s men.
“I think against Newcastle in the first half we were a bit too open because of how freely we were trying to play,” he said.
“When we’re playing such attacking football, you might sacrifice some other things that you need. If we get those two bits together, then that’s the ideal situation.”
“I just think the key is definitely not starting slowly. We started a bit slowly against Huddersfield, they got a goal and then another one. When they got that lead, they dropped back and put 11 men behind the ball so it was difficult to break them down.
“Brighton are doing well and it will be a difficult game. I think when teams come up, the most important thing for them is that they have identity and they have a plan of how they play. As you can see, Brighton have that and are building on each performance and getting stronger.
“These types of games can be underestimated [by some] in terms of how difficult they are, but we know as players it will be tough and we’ll be ready.”
Brighton have made an impressive start to life in the Premier League, producing solid displays at the back and claiming important away wins at West Ham United and Swansea City in recent weeks.
And United, following a wasteful display during the week, will have to hold their nerve, keep probing, and slowly but surely wear the visitors down, hopefully leading to a late flurry of goals that has become a welcome feature of this season.
To use a grossly over-employed maxim, United need to claim the first goal: they’ve won every game in which they’ve drawn first blood this season.
