Lou Macari: Playing full-back has helped Ashley Young’s Manchester United career

Manchester United legend Lou Macari has praised Ashley Young‘s versatility and determination, both the attributes that have helped him resurrect his career.

Young was initially brought in from Aston Villa as a free scoring winger by Sir Alex Ferguson and quickly impressed in his first season at the club.

Since then though, the change in management and personnel over the last few years saw the Englishman slowly drop down the picking order and Ashley was no longer guaranteed match time.

However, the former Watford man has adapted his game to become a marauding full-back in recent times and the change in position has seen his career reignited at United.

Perhaps inspired by Antonio Valencia‘s change, Young has now become a regular starter for the Red Devils this season and Macari has paid him tribute.

Speaking to MUTV, Lou said: “It [full-back] has helped Ashley Young here. It was not that long ago that people were talking about him leaving the club.

“He wasn’t a regular, wasn’t doing well and fair play to him that he has been playing well for over twelve months now.”

Valencia was another former winger who has successfully become one of the Premier League’s better full-backs by changing positions and working hard on his defending.

Both players were known for their work-rate before even shifting their roles and that characteristic may have been crucial to their careers.

Young has also capitalised on United’s seemingly lack of real options on the left side of the defence and has impressed his manager on a regular basis.

Marcos Rojo, Matteo Darmian, Luke Shaw and Daley Blind have all failed to nail down the position consistently with the exception that Rojo found his true calling at centre-back.

Ashley though, took advantage of his manager’s doubts over his teammates, even forcing an own-goal from Brighton’s Lewis Dunk to help the Red Devils win after an uninspiring display.
