Ander Herrera is hoping to stay at Manchester United despite continuing interest from two of the biggest clubs in his home country of Spain.
ESPN FC suggest that Herrera wants to extend his stay at Old Trafford even with interest of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
Herrera is settled in Manchester, having joined Man United back in 2014 under Louis van Gaal after coming close to a move the previous summer.
He’s a fan favourite, having been voted as Player of the Year at United last season, and his girlfriend and young daughter both live with him in Manchester.
United are set to trigger a one-year contract extension in Herrera’s contract to keep him with them until 2019, but it’s likely an entirely new deal will be agreed to extend that stay even further.
Herrera has played very little this season, only getting back into a first team starting role thanks to the long-term injury-enforced absence of Paul Pogba. With the Frenchman assumed to be returning in the next week, Herrera may find chances limited again having started eight of United’s last 11 games.
However, it’s highly unlikely he would be a starter at Barcelona or in Madrid. Their interest in the 28-year-old was most likely sparked by his contract running out next summer, but United’s extension clause will stop either club making an offer to the Spaniard.
While Herrera is not part of United’s first choice midfield, he’s the kind of player and figure that you want at United. He cares deeply, and was fantastic last season. This season’s performances have not matched those of last year, but he’s a valuable option to come in for the usual pairing of Nemanja Matic and Pogba.
