Manchester United may consider a huge move for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez as Jose Mourinho looks to add to his squad.
The Spanish attacking midfielder signed a new contract at Atletico last summer, and the 22-year-old’s deal includes a massive £134million release clause in it.
That means that Man United could sign Saul, but they are likely to want to negotiate on the price. Atletico clearly want the opposite, and put in the clause to put off any clubs making advances towards Saul.
Given the widely known nature of United’s huge economic power, the La Liga side will hardly be generous in reducing their asking price for their young talent.
The Sun report that Saul would be “open to a switch to Old Trafford next summer” if the two clubs can come to a deal. That appears to suggest that he wouldn’t push to leave Madrid for Manchester, though.
United have got two capable attacking midfielders in Juan Mata and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, but both are inconsistent with their performances and Mkhitaryan, in particular, has failed to impress in recent months with a string of woeful performances.
There is no doubting Saul’s quality. Is he worth £134m? To United, a club with frequently unmatched spending power, perhaps he is if manager Jose Mourinho sees him as a valuable addition to the squad.
Mourinho has also been linked with interest in Real Madrid’s younger forward Marco Asensio, who is 20 and has proved his ability across the city to Saul at Atleti. Both are fantastic players.
