United star heaps praise on underrated teammate after emphatic victory

Luke Shaw praised teammate Raphael Varane for helping him cope with his change in position as a centre back in today’s victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Manchester United came away with all three points in a hard-fought contest at the Molineux.

Substitute Marcus Rashford came off the bench to score the winning goal, much to the delight of Erik ten Hag.

United were solid in defence, and both the centre backs Shaw and Varane played really well.

In his post-match interview, Shaw said:

“It helps when you have someone like Varane next to you. He spoke to me a lot, not only in the game but before too.”

He was asked about the manager’s decision behind benching Rashford to which he replied, “People can’t do whatever they want, maybe that has been the problem in the past — people getting away with silly little things but the manager takes that into consideration.”

“You saw today that if you don’t keep standards high you won’t play.”

“When you’ve got someone like Marcus Rashford to come on in the second half, you know there’s a goal coming.”

Shaw has nailed down his position in the first team after yet another flawless performance.

When Lisandro Martinez returns, the Englishman is expected to move to his original left back position.

Rebel Rashford finds redemption in United's hard-earned victory over Wolves

Manchester United have broken into the top four after victory over Wolves in the Premiership.

Alejandro Garnacho, who was coming in for the disciplined Marcus Rashford, gave a free kick away in the opening two minutes in a threatening area for Wolves but luckily it didn’t come to anything.

There was a corner for United and Casemiro had a free header as the defenders didn’t pick up his run but it was deflected over the bar. It was clear to see that the Reds had been working on their set-piece routine.

Wolves made some good runs but United’s defence looked tight and put some good blocks in to deny them crossing into the danger zone.

Garnacho had a golden opportunity to put United in front in the fifteenth minute, a short pass back to his keeper from Semedo allowed Garnacho to find himself one on one with the keeper. He should have done better but his shot was well saved by Sa.

At the other end and Wolves found themselves in a fantastic position inside the box but Wan-Bissaka put in a brilliant block to deny the hosts the opening goal.

They were trying to get the ball to Costa, United needed to cut out that channel.

It was end to end football in the first half as Martial found himself in a good position as Fernandes played the ball into the box but he couldn’t get his feet around it and find the target.

Moments later and Podence had a shot on the half volley but it was Varane with the block this time. It felt like the first goal could go either way.

The game was becoming more physical with Casemiro and Fernandes having a stern talking to by the ref.

In the final touch of the first half, Antony should have scored as he dived at the back post to try and head home Garnacho’s cross but Sa got a hand to it to keep it from crossing the line.

Rashford was forgiven at half time as he came on for Garnacho and he instantly showed why as he made a fantastic run, dancing through the Wolves players but unfortunately it amounted to nothing.

Wolves continued well though, putting in a couple of good crosses into the box but they were headed away by United’s defence.

At the other end, Antony had a great chance to break the deadlock but it was blocked by the Wolves defence. Rashford had boosted the energy levels, there was no doubt about that and many of their early chances were generated by him.

Casemiro found himself in the book as he brought down Podence. The resulting free kick from around 25 yards out was delivered with power by Neves and was on target but De Gea pulled off a magnificent save to deny Wolves.

Antony found himself in space down the right but his cross was blocked again. He kept finding himself in the right places but couldn’t deliver the correct ball into his teammates.

Shaw had a chance from a well worked corner but Semedo did just enough to prevent him from finding the target.

It was the rebel, Marcus Rashford, who made the breakthrough for the Reds. He began the move and had a little one-two with Fernandes as he danced into the box and was strong against two defenders as he slotted it through the gap, just inside the near post.

United just had to hold on now but Wolves were desperate to take something from this game.

Rashford thought he’d got a second as again he wiggled his way through the defence and got his shot off, it was saved by the keeper and rebounded off him into the back of the net but VAR chalked it off as it was deemed to have come off the Mancunian’s hand.

Wolves had the momentum after that let off and they launched an attack, luckily the Reds defended strongly.

At the other end United found themselves three against two with Van de Beek leading the attack through the middle. He played it to his left to Fernandes whose shot was straight at the keeper.

United won it back, Van de Beek making the tackle in the area but his next pass was cut out by Wolves and gave them a chance to counter.

Deep into injury time and Wolves were piling on the pressure with a series of corners. Jimenez had a brilliant chance to equalise but De Gea’s reaction was quick as lightning as he got his hands up to punch it away.

United had done it, they had crept into fourth thanks to Rashford’s second half goal.

Team: De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Shaw, Malacia, Eriksen (Fred 61), Casemiro, Antony (Elanga 93), Fernandes (Maguire 93), Garnacho (Rashford 45), Martial (Van de Beek 81)

Three things we learned as Rashford fires United to victory against Wolves

Manchester United travelled to Molineux to face Wolverhampton Wanderers for the Red Devils’ final game of 2022.

Erik ten Hag was keen to build on a brilliant win against Nottingham Forest and use it as a launchpad to finish the year on a high note and go above Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League table.

The United manager fielded the same starting XI as he did against Forest, with the exception of Alejandro Garnacho who came in for Marcus Rashford.

Ten Hag confirmed that Rashford was dropped for “internal disciplinary” reasons and so opted for Garnacho to start in attack alongside Anthony Martial and Antony.

Here are three things we learned from Manchester United’s 1-0 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers

Poor first half

Ten Hag’s men were poor in the first half in comparison to their displays against Burnley and Forest.

The Reds struggled to break down a resiliently stubborn Wolves defence that did well to keep the 20-time English champions at bay.

In the midfield, United got dominated by the Wolves trio consisting of Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho and Matheus Nunes. Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen barely made any meaningful impact in the opening 45 minutes, with the Brazilian coming closest to holding his own.

United did not fashion nearly enough chances. The best chance of the half fell to Garnacho who came up in a one versus one against Jose Sa, but the Argentine could not guide the ball past the Wolves’ shot-stopper.

Towards the end of the first half Martial also had a golden chance from a brilliant cross but could not connect the ball. An offside Antony also failed to put it past Sa.

At times United looked defensively vulnerable causing the defenders to come up with last-ditch tackles and blocks.

Several of the players didn’t turn up and looked bereft of any ideas. Wolves were always going to be a tricky proposition but Ten Hag would have been disappointed by some of his stars and their awful showings heading into the break.

Antony extremely poor again

Against Forest, Antony was United’s poorest attacker by a margin and he continued his sub-par performance against Wolves.

Antony lacked any threat and most of United’s attacking forays broke down with the Brazilian. His passing was also not up to the level.

Antony’s fundamental flaw was on full display against Wolves – the winger’s overreliance on his left foot.

Opposition defenders on multiple occasions clocked Antony’s shifting of the ball to his left and blocked this action, effectively neutralizing his influence.

The 22-year-old attacker failed to take his man on when opportunities presented themselves. From a defensive point of view, Antony was also reluctant to track back in instances where any other decent team would have capitalized and punished United.

Ten Hag has a decision to make with regard to Antony. Should he continue playing him through bad form or take him from the firing line?

Lack of quality depth still a major issue

The lack of quality bench options available to Ten Hag was a glaring issue against Wolves.

Apart from Rashford who came in for Garnacho after the break, the United boss was limited in who he could bring on as an impact substitution.

Ten Hag for instance had no one who could come on for Antony. In place of Martial, Ten Hag brought on Donny van de Beek, hardly a striker by any stretch of the imagination.

The absence of a left-footed centre-half also made it necessary to play Shaw at the heart of the defence yet again.

United must dip into the January transfer window and get Ten Hag one or two additions. The club must bolster the squad and aid the manager in his ambition to get United back into the Champions League.

Rashford the hero again, but this United star was easily the worst vs Wolves

Manchester United beat Wolves 1-0 at Molyneux this lunchtime in the Premier League. Here are our player ratings for the game:

(A score of 6 is around average.)

David de Gea 7 – Good save from Neves free kick and great stop in injury time. Had very little to do otherwise.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 7.5 – Excellent penalty box tackle in first half saved a certain goal. But leaving way too much space on his flank at times with that old habit of drifting infield for no reason. Better in second half.

Raphael Varane 7.5 – Did well.

Luke Shaw 7.5 – A good game for Shaw at centre back.

Tyrell Malacia 7.5 – Defended very well. Ventured forward a few times but would like to see more.

Christian Eriksen 5 – Quiet and ineffective. His normal personality was missed from the game.

Casemiro 6 – Did OK but didn’t dominate the game like he did against Burnley and Forest.

Antony 4 – Very poor in the first half and hard to understand why it wasn’t him that came off at half time. Embarrassing dribbling, woeful passing and poor finishing. Good tracking back in second half to stop United from getting caught on the break.

Bruno Fernandes 5.5 – An unusually ineffective and subdued performance from Bruno. Terrible free kick.

Alejandro Garnacho 5.5 – Not his day, should have finished when put through from a defensive error. Worked hard though.

Anthony Martial 5.5 Didn’t get much service and didn’t do much with it when he did get it.

Substitutes

Marcus Rashford 8 – Saved the day. Great goal out of nothing. Could’ve gone down for a penalty but was strong and determined. Unlucky with the disallowed one, too. Would have probably gone in with or without the hand involvement.

Fred 7 – Lively, an upgrqde on the out-of-sorts Eriksen.

Donny van de Beek 5.5 – Got clear a couple of times but didn’t make it count.

Harry Maguire 6 – Not much influence.

Anthony Elanga 6 – Not much influence.

"Internal disciplinary": Ten Hag confirms why top star is dropped for crucial Wolves game

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford will not play from the start of his side’s game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

When the lineup came out, Rashford’s name was shockingly not included with Alejandro Garnacho coming in for the Englishman.

The decision was puzzling to say the least, with Rashford currently in terrific form and enjoying his most productive spell in recent memory.

Rashford scored in both of United’s games against Burnley and Nottingham Forest.

He also registered an assist in the Forest game, for Anthony Martial‘s second of the game.

Speaking to the press before the game, Ten Hag confirmed that Rashford was not named in the starting XI due to “internal disciplinary” reasons.

The United boss did not offer further explanation on those reasons, leaving a lot up for speculation.

On starting Garnacho ahead of Rashford, Ten Hag said, “We have a good team and Alejandro [Garnacho] comes in.”

“He did really well in the last couple of games and made huge progress.”

“I am expecting him to contribute and expecting him to bring his skills.”

Alongside Rashford, the other player conspicuously missing from the starting XI is Harry Maguire, with Ten Hag preferring to deploy Luke Shaw in the left-centre-back role for the second time in a row.

The Dutch coach reiterated that the United skipper is still recovering from an illness that sidelined him from the Carabao Cup game against Burnley.

Ten Hag however added that Shaw’s inclusion is not based on Maguire’s illness alone but also motivated by tactical reasons, with the full-back a better fit against Wolves.

Confirmed United XI vs Wolves: Shaw at centre-back again, Rashford benched

Lisandro Martinez has not made the starting XI for Manchester United’s trip to Molyneux this lunchtime despite having returned from his World Cup-winning celebrations.

The back four remains the same as it was against Nottingham Forest in midweek, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Tyrell Malacia in the full back slots and Luke shaw and Raphael Varane as centre backs.

This probably also means that Victor Lindelof and harry Maguire have not recovered from the virus that is doing the rounds at Old Trafford.

Marcus Rashford may be another casualty as he is named on the bench.

Antony and Alejandro Garnacho will play on the wings, with Anthony Martial up front and Bruno Fernandes in the number 10 position.

Casemiro and Christian Eriksen once again take up their defensive midfield roles. and David de Gea continues in goal.

Joining Maguire, Lindelof and Rashford on the bench are Tom Heaton, Kobbie Mainoo, Brandon Williams, Donny van de Beek and Anthony Elanga.

Jadon Sancho has returned to individual training but has not as yet trained with the team and does not feature.

Despite being in the relegation zone, Wolves often cause United problems and a depleted team is the last thing manager Erik ten Hag would have wanted.

On the other hand, his side are riding the crest of a wave at the moment and are brimming with confidence.

The fact that Rashford is on the bench offers some comfort that there will be a powerful Plan B if the starting XI fails to get the job done.

4-3-3: United's dynamic duo will wreak havoc against Wolves today

Manchester United square off against Wolverhampton Wanderers today at the Molineux stadium.

The Red Devils will be eyeing their third successive victory in the Premier League.

Despite a shaky start to the season, Erik ten Hag has steadied the ship and United now look like strong contenders to finish in the top four.

United are currently in fifth place with 29 points, one point behind Tottenham Hotspur with a game in hand.

They face a Wolves side which is yet to start clicking.

The hosts have scored the least goals in the Premier League but new manager Julen Lopetegui will be hoping to unleash his attacking stars.

United have quite a few players bang in form.

Marcus Rashford has looked unstoppable over the last few games and Ten Hag has managed to get the best out of him.

On the wings, he looks more dangerous than ever.

Anthony Martial‘s return from injury is a major boost for United. He offers excellent link-up play with his teammates and is vital in holding the ball to release pressure.

Martial and Rashford share great chemistry on the pitch and it was seen in the former’s goal against Nottingham Forest.

Casemiro has picked up from where he left before the international break, putting in another world-class performance.

Bruno Fernandes‘ improvement will also please United fans who criticised him last season for his below-par performances.

Ten Hag is expected to bring back Lisandro Martinez in defence, allowing Luke Shaw to move to his original left back position.

The rest of the team is likely to remain unchanged.

United are likely to have the majority of the ball, with Wolves looking to counter with their pacy forwards.

The visitors will need to be patient in possession and take their chances when they arrive.

United close to tying down player Ten Hag describes as 'unquestionable' - report

Manchester United are ready to offer Diogo Dalot a five year contract extension at Old Trafford.

As reported in Sport Witness, the right back is one of a handful of first team players whose contracts are running down with the club discussing new deals.

Dalot has been in fine form this season and has become a mainstay in Erik ten Hag’s side since the Dutchman’s arrival.

United have already triggered the one year extension in Dalot’s contract, which ran out at the end of the summer, keeping him at the club until 2024, minimum.

It has been some 2022 for Dalot who is now a firmly established figure for both United and Portugal.

United had looked almost certain to go into the market for a right back in the summer but Dalot has taken his chance to grab the position with both hands.

The right-back has been one of United key performers this season, starting every game he has been available for, under for Ten Hag.

It’s been an impressive turnaround for Dalot whose future at the club has looked uncertain, particularly when Aaron Wan-Bissaka arrived for £50 million in the summer of 2019.

Dalot was shipped off to AC Milan on loan where it looked more like a case of putting himself in the shop window, rather than gaining experience to bring back to Old Trafford.

Ten Has now sees Dalot as ‘unquestionable’ and United are now desperate for the player to commit his long-term future to the club.

Dalot has recently returned to training after picking up an injury at the World Cup but is unlikely to feature in today’s game against Wolves.

He is expected to return to first team contention in the New Year as United continue to compete for a place in the top four of the Premier League.

Picture: Richard Arnold left red faced as Saudis make humiliating u-turn

Manchester United have been dealt a big blow in their efforts to acquire a new shirt sponsor.

A few weeks ago, the club had announced that it had arrived at an agreement with TeamViewer to mutually end the team’s shirt sponsorship.

Until United secure a new sponsor, however, TeamViewer will remain on United’s jersey.

TeamViewer withdrawing their sponsorship came amidst takeover claims with the Glazers looking to finally sell up and oversee a change of ownership at Old Trafford.

According to EPL World, United chiefs were locked in negotiations with The Saudi Tourism Authority to become the Red Devils’ new shirt sponsor.

Richard Arnold met with representatives from The Saudi Tourism Authority regarding the deal.

However, for unexplained reasons, the signing and announcement have been called off.

EPL World reports, “The Saudi Tourism Authority stopped negotiations with Manchester United regarding sponsoring the club’s shirt.”

“There was a tripartite meeting between the club’s CEO, the representative of the authority Anas Al-Sharif and the representative of social responsibility experts Saud Al-Subaie.”

“The initial contract was supposed to be signed between the two parties this week.”

In the picture, a picture of the United jersey is displayed on a TV screen with “Visit Saudi” clearly brandished on the middle of the shirt.

Another picture shows Cristiano Ronaldo wearing the branded kit. It’s unclear what may have led to the signing being called off.

It remains to be seen whether it will take place again at a future date or whether talks have totally collapsed. It’s however not a good look for United. From the outside, the club looks to be in turmoil at every turn.

Video: United fans ecstatic after loanee crowns masterclass with wondergoal

Manchester United loanee Amad Diallo was on the scoresheet yesterday as Sunderland cruised to a 4-1 win against Wigan Athletic.

Diallo started the game and played all 90 minutes as the Black Cats ran rampant at the DW Stadium.

Amad capped his fine performance with a brilliant goal that was the pick of the bunch from Tony Mowbray’s men.

Diallo, who played on his favoured right wing, received a brilliant ball from one of his teammates.

The Ivorian then fired a ferocious shot from outside the box with his left foot, giving Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Jamie Jones no chance.

Diallo gave his goal a fitting celebration –  a knee slide before he performed a rhythmic dance popularly known as “the griddy.”

Overall, the 20-year-old overall gave a masterclass against Wigan, who he troubled all night.

The United loanee constantly took his man on, showing his excellent feet and adeptness with the ball at his feet.

In terms of passing, Amad was also superb. He created numerous opportunities for his colleagues and on another day, he himself would have had more than one goal.

He came close to scoring again on two occasions before his wondergoal.

Diallo’s earlier shot was saved by Jones who acrobatically dived low and kept the ball from going in with his feet.

The youngster came close again against the Wigan shot-stopper but could only hit the woodwork. Earlier this week, Sunderland boss Mowbray spoke about Diallo and refuted rumours that United are looking into taking him back from loan.

Fabrizio Romano indicated that United are extremely happy and content with the youngster’s spell at the Stadium of Light.

The Red Devils have also turned down approaches from Italy for Diallo.

United eyeing surprise swoop for three-time Champions League winning attacker - report

Manchester United’s need to strengthen up front in January is an open secret with the club trying its level best to secure a signing despite their financial constraints.

It was initially assumed that PSV Eindhoven hot-shot Cody Gakpo would be heading to Old Trafford after persistent links with the attacker since the summer.

But in a rather unfortunate turn of events, fierce rivals Liverpool ended up stealing a march with the Dutch international set to become the latest addition to Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The likes of Goncalo Ramos and Rafael Leao are beyond United’s reach in January due to their club raising their valuations after successful a World Cup campaign.

United’s complicated striker search

As reported previously on The Peoples Person, the Red Devils can only sign players on loan in the winter due to the uncertainty surrounding the sale of the club.

Joao Felix of Atletico Madrid is available on loan but his loan fee coupled with his wage demands is likely to be too much for the Old Trafford side.

Barcelona star Memphis Depay remains an option while new reports have emerged stating that the Premier League giants are also looking at a temporary move for Alvaro Morata.

The never-ending cycle of rumours has continued on Friday with Defensa Central stating that United could jump for out-of-favour Real Madrid attacker Marco Asensio.

The report states that United are desperate for attacking additions in January and that “Marco Asensio fits them perfectly both in terms of price, talent and salary.”

The Spaniard’s contract with the Los Blancos is set to expire next summer and Real cannot ask for too high a price for their asset considering he will be free to agree a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from January 1.

Asensio emerges as unlikely option

The report goes on to state that the 26-year-old is unhappy due the cold treatment meted out to him by the Madrid board and their reluctance to reward him with a hike in salary.

Asensio is asking for a rise from €6million to €8million, something United will have no problem with giving considering that was the wage they had agreed to pay Gakpo.

Asensio’s agent Jorge Mendes is aware of the interest in his client and had even offered his services in the summer but United had opted to sign Antony instead.

They might be open to revisiting their interest in the Madrid winger considering the lack of goals currently. He remains prolific despite managing only 426 minutes of game time this campaign.

The three-time Champions League winner has chipped in with three goals and as many assists while he also managed to score in the recently-concluded World Cup.

Ten Hag confirms United are in the hunt for striker in January

Erik ten Hag says United are looking to sign a specific type of player in the January transfer window.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of tomorrow’s Premier League clash with Wolves, recorded after Tuesday’s Nottingham Forest match, the manager said:

“We want to be in all the leagues and keep playing in all the leagues and winning games in cups as well. So you need players and good players to cover, not only numbers but quality players. You need also competition so you can make technical choices.

“We are looking for the right player for our squad and that has to match the sporting criteria and definitely also some financial criteria.”

The boss was then asked about Aaron Wan-Bissaka‘s future.

The full back appeared to be close to the exit door under Ten Hag but has played in the last two games as Diogo Dalot nurses a hamstring injury sustained on World Cup duty.

“First you have to be on the pitch and in first half of season he was either injured or ill so you don’t have a role in squad,” Ten Hag said.

“The break was good for him. He could play in the training camp, in Spain, two games. Now he has played two games and is doing really well. We needed the competition in the squad.”

His comments suggest that a right back may not be pursued in this window, with all attention being paid to finding a forward.

Ten Hag also alluded to the need to have a strong squad again, saying:

“We need impact from the bench. I am happy once again a player was coming from the bench; Fred is scoring a goal and I think all the subs who came in tonight did really well.

“But also in the offensive department you need players coming from the bench, whether it’s to score a goal, if you are leading and you need to go for counter-attacks or keep the win on your side.

There was no update on the injury status of Dalot, nor on whether Lisandro Martinez will return to the United side in tomorrow’s match.

Second bite of the cherry? United's nearly man available for free in June - report

Manchester United could make a fresh move for Adrien Rabiot in June if he leaves Juventus on a free transfer.

The Frenchman’s contract expires at the end of the season and he could be about to search for a new club in January.

Man United held huge interest in the summer with it looking likely that he would make the move to the Premier League.

However, negotiations reportedly broke down due to his mother/agent Veronique’s salary demands and the club signed Casemiro, meaning there was less need for another midfielder to join the club.

Next summer, Erik ten Hag could look to bolster his options in the middle of the park.

The Frenkie de Jong saga is expected to continue throughout the year as the manager has made it clear he still wants the Dutchman at the club.

But in considering other options, it is possible that in the summer, Rabiot could join the club for nothing in terms of transfer fees and could be a suitable alternative if Ten Hag wants to complete his midfield overhaul.

A move to the Premier League is intriguing for Rabiot who will evaluate his options at the end of the season.

TuttoSport.com reports that Juventus manager Allegri would never give up on Rabiot despite his future hanging in limbo.

The manager doesn’t want to get rid of the midfielder anytime soon, especially in the January transfer window, while the club are suffering in the league.

Renewal at Juventus hasn’t been ruled out yet by either party, but the outlet reports that despite Allegri wanting to keep the player, for financial reasons the Serie A club will not close the doors if an offer comes through in January.

Any potential departure next month would have to be for a substantial fee, so if United do go back in for a second bite of the cherry, it will almost certainly happen in the summer.

United’s focus in January is on finding a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, who departed the club on bad terms last month.

Diego Simeone provides crucial update on João Félix's potential Premier League move

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has spoken on the future of João Félix after his side’s La Liga victory last night.

As reported in Spanish media outlet, AS, Simeone reiterated he will do what’s best for Atleti but didn’t close the door on a move away for the forward.

Félix’s point blank header broke the deadlock for Simeone’s side last night, in what was a hard fought 2-0 win against lowly Elche.

Speaking to the press after the game, Simeone admitted he wasn’t sure what the future holds for the 23-year-old.

“João Félix? I seek to get the best for the club, after what has to happen happens” he said.

Simeone is believed to be happy to let Félix go in January, having plumped for Alvaro Morata in the majority of his side’s games season.

This has left Félix short of game time and he is now reportedly open to a move away from Madrid, in a bid to fulfill his undoubted potential.

Erik ten Hag and Manchester United are keen admirers and favourites to land the Portuguese forward, should he move.

If the move to Old Trafford does materialise in January, it looks almost certain to be a loan deal with a permanent transfer to be discussed at the end of the season.

United are reportedly in conversation regarding the loan fee, with Atletico reportedly looking for €22 million, as well as the players wages being paid in full.

Given the Glazer family’s desire to sanction a sale for the club in the coming months, this kind of economical deal seems the most likely route for Ten Hag to get the reinforcements he desperately requires.

Should United manage to negotiate the fee, Félix would provide Ten Hag with an exciting option in his fluid front line and could prove the difference between achieving Champions League qualification for next season, or not.

Ex-CEO reveals why "abnormal" starlet rejected United's insanely superior financial package

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham turned down a move to Manchester United in 2020 to prioritize his development as a player.

United offered the greatest financial package by far but Bellingham turned them down and chose a move to Signal Iduna Park over Old Trafford.

This is according to Ex-Birmingham CEO Dong Ren, who revealed that despite United’s aggressive charm offensive, Bellingham and his family did not make their decision based on money.

“Ed Woodward [then United CEO] was the most insistent. We sat down and talked about how we could convince Bellingham. But Jude didn’t make any decisions based on money.”

“They offered much more salary compared to the rest. Maybe double. He was going to have guaranteed millions in the bank and he did not take them. That’s not normal for a player at all.”

“He chose Dortmund over Bayern despite not being sure to win titles and money. He put all that behind his development. How many players would do that? Because nothing is guaranteed at Dortmund. It might not have turned out well.”

Ren detailed how United sought the services of some of the club’s legends to try to lure Bellingham to the Theatre of Dreams.

First, the teenager sat down with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He then had a meeting with Alex Ferguson before United arranged for the youngster to talk with Eric Cantona.

Ren added that he could have persuaded Bellingham to join United, who had offered almost three times more than any other suitor and were offering the Blues a better offer.

He however let Bellingham and his entourage make their own decision due to the loyalty he showed them. Birmingham retired the number 22 shirt after Bellingham left for Germany.

The 19-year-old will be on the move this summer with a number of Europe’s elite clubs expressing interest in him, among them United.

However, the 20-times Champions face an uphill battle to convince the Englishman to join their ranks, as they did two years ago. Some of the other clubs that are known admirers of Bellingham include Liverpool, Real Madrid and Manchester City.

United "ready to pay" big money as club braced for "crazy" record offer - report

Despite strengthening their midfield in the summer with the addition of two superstars, Manchester United are still interested in improving their midfield.

There have been constant links with the likes of Erik ten Hag‘s favourite midfielder Frenkie de Jong as well as England superstar Jude Bellingham.

The World Cup ensured Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez is now the hottest property ion world football and naturally the Red Devils have been linked with a move.

Enzo, a player in demand

According to Correio da Manhã, United are “ready to pay” to sign the Benfica ace as the race for his signature heats up.

As reported earlier, a lot of Premier League clubs are chasing the 21-year-old’s signature. Liverpool have been mentioned as possible suitors while Chelsea are also in the race.

However, his release clause is a mammoth €120million, which will be nearly impossible for the clubs to pay in January. Recent reports had even suggested that despite the price tag, United had edged ahead in the race.

The report mentioned that super agent, Jorge Mendes, has been ‘gathering’ proposals and is trying to secure his client a move to England.

While Benfica would like to hold on to the jewel in their crown, if a club were to pay the clause in full and should the player be willing to move, there is nothing the Portuguese giants can do.

Benfica are almost resigned to losing their midfield magician but there is a growing belief within the club that they will break their record set by João Félix’s departure in 2019, when they cashed in €126 million.

Big money move to happen soon

Another outlet Record mentioned that it is only a matter of time before Mendes arrives with a €120m bid. They also mention that club president Rui Costa will be presented with a “crazy offer” for the World Cup winner.

Interestingly, they have added that Benfica have already received a €100m offer from an unnamed party for the 21-year-old, which was immediately refused.

Even more surprisingly, O Jogo have revealed that Costa has already received two proposal for €127m and is holding out for bids in the region of €130m.

While Fernández’s departure is an ‘inevitability’, Benfica are already working on replacing him with Racing Club de Avellaneda midfielder Carlos Alcaraz a potential option.

Top four rivals enter the race for £35m defender coveted by United - report

After the mega summer splurge of over £200 million by Manchester United in the summer, it was always supposed to be a quiet January window for the club.

But Erik ten Hag flagged the lack of a back-up right back as an issue that could potentially be looked at during the winter window after admitting that first-choice full-back Diogo Dalot had been overworked.

It was evident from his handling of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer favourite Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who had seen only four minutes of action prior to the World Cup, that he was no longer part of the manager’s plans.

ETH wants a right-back

Despite redeeming himself through his performances against Burnley in the EFL Cup and Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, Wan-Bissaka is still expected to leave.

United’s right-back hunt has been complicated due to the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and the subsequent need to bring in an elite goal-scorer.

But the club remains committed to bringing in a player to provide competition to the Portuguese international should Wan-Bissaka leave on loan in January.

Quite a few names have been linked with a move to Old Trafford in January but a lot depends on the player’s valuation due to the funds crunch currently plaguing the club.

One of the names constantly linked with the Red Devils is Malo Gusto of Lyon. But it will not be easy to acquire his services in January or next summer due to the interest he is generating among Europe’s elites.

According to The Daily Mail, “Newcastle have joined the list of clubs showing interest in Lyon right-back Malo Gusto. The 19-year-old is also wanted by Manchester United.”

Newcastle join United in the race for Gusto

The report also mentions that also “bids are expected to be shelved until the summer with Lyon asking for at least £35 million for January.”

Gusto has made 14 appearances in Ligue 1 so far this campaign, placing him among the club’s top five most used players this season. Only three players having played more minutes than him.

He also has an assist to show for his efforts and despite his tender age, he has been one of Lyon’s standout players.

One of the more agile players in Lyon’s squad, the full-back likes to get forward and is always seen hugging the touch-line and providing the width to Lyon’s play this season.

After "difficult" spell, this United star is finally "ready" to push on

One Manchester United new summer recruit whose initial contributions have been swept under the carpet in recent weeks is Tyrell Malacia.

The Dutchman’s arrival was not filled with the usual hype and it happened so fast that fans were left in shock. But the full-back from Feyenoord was a specific request from Erik ten Hag who was a big admirer from his Ajax days.

And while his start was slow, he soon showed his ability on the pitch and made five straight starts in the Premier League following Luke Shaw‘s horror show in the opening two games.

But a disappointing performance against Manchester City saw him lose his place and he has had to do with a one appearance in an unfamiliar right-back position in the league since.

Malacia was solid initially

Apart from on-pitch heroics, Malacia has helped hugely in Shaw regaining his hunger and appetite. He has pushed the Englishman all the way, which has brought out the best in Shaw consistently.

He has also shown his versatility, playing at right-back on a couple of occasions and even doubling up as a centre-back for his national team.

To be successful, every club needs such team players willing to sacrifice for the good of the side and never complaining about the cards they are dealt with.

Ten Hag has spoken out about his love for players who have the positional awareness and discipline to occupy multiple positions in a team.

Despite being picked in the Dutch national team for the World Cup, the 23-year-old failed to play a single minute and returned fresh for club duty.

He has started in both post World Cup games for United in his favoured left-back slot and has impressed with his ferocious displays.

And the Dutch full-back revealed how frustrating an experience it was to stay out of the starting line-up.

Malacia making a difference both on the pitch & in training

“It is of course difficult when you are not allowed minutes,” he told ViaPlay, relayed by Voetbal Primeur.

“You keep hoping every game and you do your best at training. You try to support the team as much as possible, but it’s definitely difficult.

“I want to play every game, so yes, it’s definitely hard when you sit there for so many weeks and you don’t play. Sure, I’ve had a moment of I’m through for a while.

“But you always have to recover. You never know if you have to be there. You always have to be ready.”

Malacia has made a total of 17 appearances in all competitions, starting in 14 of them. Not the worst stats to have in your debut season in the Premier League.

And now that he is back, hopefully, Malacia can push Shaw all the way, something that can only be positive for United going forward.

United could make audacious swoop for surprise English star after "contract delay"

Erik ten Hag’s desire to mould his Manchester United team in his own image is well underway with quite a few changes having taken place after their summer splurge.

The defence has been transformed thanks to the arrival of Lisandro Martinez from Ajax while Casemiro and Christian Eriksen have proved to be revelations in midfield.

While consternations remain over the lack of firepower up top, it is between the sticks that Ten Hag is most worried about for the long-term future of the club.

GK conundrum at United

David de Gea has been an exceptional servant to the club during his decade-long stay but while his shot-stopping remains superlative, it is in other areas that he continues to lack.

Modern goalkeepers all are required to be comfortable with the ball at their feet and have the ability to play as a sweeper-keeper when required.

For far too long, De Gea’s weakness while playing out from the back and his tendency to remain rooted to the spot has held back the Red Devils.

And the Dutch boss had made it abundantly clear that he wants a change, even if the Spaniard were to stay on at the club for the long term on reduced wages.

A lot of goalkeepers have been linked with a move to Old Trafford including the likes of Jan Oblak, Diogo Costa, Yann Sommer and Odysseas Vlachodimos.

One surprising name that was mentioned back in the summer and has once again been found a mention ahead of the January transfer window is that of Everton shot-stopper Jordan Pickford.

According to The Daily Mail, “England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford’s Everton future is in doubt, with the club yet to sign off on the new five-year contract he agreed before the World Cup.

Pickford emerges as surprise candidate

“Word of the delay has alerted the likes of Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea.”

Apparently, the England No 1 had agreed a five-year new deal before going to Qatar but the contract is yet to be signed off by the club for some unknown reason.

“The delay is at boardroom level, and not with the player. Sources have expressed surprise that the contract remains with the club’s owners, when a swift resolution had been expected before Pickford left for Qatar,” the report further added.

While Tottenham are looking at a long-term successor for Hugo Lloris, 36, Chelsea have struggled to find a reliable stopper in recent seasons.

It is written that United could possibly fund this strange switch by moving on on-loan goalie Dean Henderson, currently on loan at Nottingham Forest.

United 'warming their engines' to bring €50 million star to Old Trafford

Manchester United are preparing a bid to sign Napoli defender, Kim Min-jae.

As reported in Sport Witness, United are ‘warming their engines’ as they continue their pursuit of the South Korean international.

Min-jae has been in excellent form since his move to Naples in the summer, with Napoli flying high at the top of Serie A while having the third-best defensive record in the league.

The centre-half further enhanced his reputation with an impressive World Cup display, which saw South Korea progress to the knockout phase.

His performances have alerted the top clubs across Europe, with United boss Erik ten Hag said to be a huge admirer.

Although Ten Hag has his favoured centre-back pairing in place in the form of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane, Min-jae would provide excellent depth.

Given Varane’s fitness troubles coupled with the amount of games United are likely to be involved in, the 26-year-old would have a huge part to play at Old Trafford.

There is a reported €50 million release clause in Min-jae’s contract which can only be triggered by clubs outside of Italy.

Napoli are desperate for the South Korean to sign a new deal in Naples in order to remove or increase the clause, with his market value only increasing by the day.

Any move from United will almost certainly come in the summer with funds tight going into the January window.

The focus remains solely on bringing in a striker to replace Cristiano Ronaldo, which looks like the only business on the cards in the next month.

This, coupled with the hopeful sale of the club from the Glazer family early next year, leaves the club short on funds and reluctant to sanction a high fee for any player in January.

If United do make the move in the summer, they are likely to face stiff competition with Real Madrid joining a host of Premier League and Serie A sides as potential suitors, should Min-jae decide to leave Italy.

Real Madrid aiming to take advantage of United teen sensation's contract situation - report

Ever since his heroics against Aston Villa in the EFL Cup and last-gasp winner against Fulham in the Premier League, Alejandro Garnacho’s stocks have soared meteorically.

After a few initial hiccups under Erik ten Hag where he was accused of having poor mentality, the Argentine has recovered and how!

All his United teammates have praised his effectiveness and despite his young age, he is now a valuable member of the first-team and has played in both games post the World Cup.

United’s wing options like Jadon Sancho and Anthony Elanga have both struggled to nail down a starting berth, and Garnacho has grabbed his opportunity with both hands and moved above the pair in the pecking order.

Garnacho, a star-in-the-making

However, there remains uncertainty surrounding his future at the club due to the fact that his contract is set to expire in 2023 with foreign clubs able to agree a pre-contract arrangement with the tricky winger as early as January 1.

In a bid to avoid losing him on a free just like Paul Pogba, United are desperately trying to agree a long-term contract with the 18-year-old.

There have been reports that the Red Devils are even willing to offer him ten times his current wages in a bid to hold on their their academy’s latest diamond.

However, till the time the deal is officially signed and sealed, foreign clubs will continue to sniff and try and their hand at acquiring the former Atletico Madrid starlet.

According to Defensa Central (via Caughtoffside), “Real Madrid are ready to ramp up their interest in Manchester United forward Alejandro Garnacho.”

Real eyeing Garnacho on a free

The report has added that a return to Madrid could interest the youngster, where he had spent a part of his formative years.

However, there remains doubts whether he can break into the starting line-up and garner as many minutes as he is receiving currently at the Red Devils.

The fans have taken to him and Garnacho should ideally not let them down by leaving so soon. There is a positive feeling that United can agree an extension soon.

Former Red highlights players who are flourishing without Ronaldo

Ex-Manchester United keeper Tim Howard stated the players he thinks will flourish now that Ronaldo has left the club.

Following United’s victory over Forest, Howard, who is now an NBC Sports Analyst, mentioned Bruno Fernandes:  “Before Ronaldo came, he was the leader. He was scoring goals, he was all over the referee, he was loud.”

United returned to Premier League action last night for the first time since Ronaldo’s explosive interview and his eventual contract termination following his remarks about the manager and club.

He continued, “He kinda got into his shell while Ronaldo was here. This is what we’re going to see again, this is his team, Casemiro’s team. This is what we need to see from them.”

Casemiro was named player of the match whilst Fernandes also had a good game, creating chances going forward.

Fellow commentator, Robbie Mustoe, thinks United’s youngster will ‘thrive’ now the Portuguese star has gone.

The Forest game saw goals from Anthony Martial, Fred and Marcus Rashford who is back to his very best!

“I think that for many reasons, the younger players thrive without that little pressure that he wants the ball all the time.”

“He wants to make the runs and I’ve got to play around him, he’s got to be the main man. They’re enjoying not having that.”

However, despite the Red’s convincing win, Mustoe was left unimpressed by two United stars – Martial and Antony.

Speaking of Antony he said, “It’s great to be here to see him in the flesh, a couple of little movements but again just struggled to have an impact.”

“There will be games for him,” he continued. “Maybe he’s gonna need a little bit more time so there are a few bits in the side that need improving but the whole picture is looking really good.”

United sit fifth in the Premier League table, just one point behind Spurs as they head into the new year.

Another Glazers bomb: Loan fee for La Liga superstar beyond United's reach - report

Manchester United’s resounding 3-0 win at Old Trafford on Tuesday against Nottingham Forest in their Premier League return brought some much needed cheer to the lives of United fans after recent transfer heartbreak.

Erik ten Hag had publicly revealed that he needed reinforcements up front following the acrimonious departure of last season’s top goal-scorer Cristiano Ronaldo.

Cody Gakpo was heavily linked with a move to Manchester and most reports seemed to indicate that a move was imminent. Instead, the Dutch striker is headed to bitter rivals Liverpool in a shocking development.

Funds crunch costs United big time

The result, helped by goals from United’s current attacking options in Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, will have pleased the United boss.

But fans are aware that the manager is once again going to pay the price for the Glazers’ abject failure.

The manager even confirmed his requirement after his team’s victory on Tuesday. “I think we are always in the market but it has to match the sporting criteria and also the financial criteria.”

The Peoples Person had revealed that due to the owners trying to actively sell the club in the first financial quarter of 2023, the club would most likely be looking at making loan signings in January.

That effectively rules out any moves for Benfica ace Goncalo Ramos and AC Milan’s Rafael Leao. Both attackers enjoyed highly successful World Cups and their clubs have raised the valuation through the roof.

The only remaining options include a move for Atletico Madrid attacker Joao Felix and Memphis Depay of Barcelona. Interestingly, Felix is available on loan.

Felix loan deal beyond reach

It was reported earlier that the Spanish giants are looking at loan fee of around £8million with United having to compete with the likes of Premier League leaders Arsenal as well as new entrants Chelsea.

However, Jamie Jackson of The Guardian has now poured cold water on United’s ambitions stating that even such a low fee is beyond United’s reach at the moment.

“João Félix is one name that would have interested United as the Portuguese forward appears unhappy at Atlético Madrid, but even his loan fee is likely to be too expensive in this window.”
