Manchester United beat Southampton by an incredible NINE goals to nil at Old Trafford this evening to go back level on points with neighbours City at the top of the Premier League.
Southampton unravelled badly after Jankewitz was sent off for a horrible foul on Scott McTominay in the second minute. United were classy and clinical and never took their foot off the pedal throughout the game. By the time Jan Bednarek followed Jankewitz off in the 87th minute, United were already 7-0 up.
The goals were scored by Wan-Bissaka, Rashford, Bednarek (og), Cavani, Martial (2), McTominay, Bruno Fernandes and James.
United have now scored the most goals of any team in the Premier League so far this season.
The huge haul from the Red Devils has also done wonders for their goal difference, which is now equal with that of Liverpool, who lie third just four points behind with a game in hand.
A nine goal victory is the joint highest ever in the Premier League. One of the other two came from United when they beat Ipswich in 1995, with Andy Cole netting five, and the other also involved Southampton, who lost by the same margin to Leicester in October 2019.
After the game, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said ‘We know, better than anyone, what goal difference can do to you because we have lost the league on goal difference.’ Class.
