Not all doom and gloom: Stat shows there's hope after Arsenal result

Manchester United’s failure to get all three points vs Arsenal was certainly a blow in their title aspirations but it gave fans an opportunity to reflect.

The last time Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men came up against the Gunners they lost in circumstances that were deemed unforgivable given the context.

This time around supporters weren’t all too happy but a statistic has emerged since showing that it’s not quite the end of the world.

United did have the chances to win the game and on another day they might’ve converted them and it’s obvious Solskjaer has to address the team’s performances vs the big sides this season.

However, for all the criticism the legendary Norwegian and his team are rightfully getting after the Arsenal performance, it’s also important to not forget what has happened over the past few months.

Whether or not performances have been good enough in the results shown above is frankly not all that important.

After all, the Red Devils have shown title-winning form so the question becomes how can they maintain that over a whole season.

Solskjaer needs to nip the recent dip in form in the bud and quickly get his team back on track if he hopes to remain as title challengers.

On fire: A look into how Man United star has transformed his game

Manchester United star Aaron Wan-Bissaka was recently named the man of the match in the disappointing draw with Arsenal and he certainly deserved the personal trophy.

Normally a player winning the man of the match in a goalless draw means something went wrong or he was just the best of a bad bunch.

However, Wan-Bissaka’s display was the kind of performance fans were praising Luke Shaw for and yet somehow he went under the radar a bit.

Perhaps it was due to the result but it’s safe to say it’s time to look into how the long-legged right-back has transformed.

The clash against Arsenal showcased the best of Wan-Bissaka’s attributes and he’s managed to work on his weaknesses so much they’ve actually turned into strengths.

Wan-Bissaka was often rightfully accused of not being a good enough attacking outlet but he was certainly Manchester United’s most dangerous man vs Arsenal, as evidenced by his stats above.

Not only are his tackles, ball recoveries, interceptions and clearances all representative of good numbers but his chance creation deserves plenty of praise.

Of course Wan-Bissaka isn’t the finished product yet but if he continues on his current path, he’ll turn into a pretty complete defender.

There are still some adjustments to be made defensively as well such as his positioning being poor at times but it would be harsh to overly criticise it.

After some recent poor form, it seems Wan-Bissaka has begun to turn a corner and rediscover what made fans so happy when United first signed him.

Man United fans will be excited by this young prospect's loan

Manchester United prospect Teden Mengi is reportedly set for a loan move to the Championship as he looks to continue his brilliant development.

The young centre-back is a player that fans have kept a close eye on as he’s regarded to be amongst the best products the academy has produced.

With the centre-back position an area of weakness in the United squad, many were hoping Mengi could develop in time to help address it.

However, the club have done the right thing by protecting Mengi and giving him all the time he needs to become a first-team star.

The latest step in helping that dream become a reality appears to be sending him on loan to Derby, where Red Devil legend Wayne Rooney is now the manager.

There is no doubt Rooney must have used his contacts at Manchester United to make the deal happen but it seems to be a scenario in which all parties benefit.

In the former striker, the club can relax knowing he will stick to his agreement in regards to Mengi and use him as much as possible.

Rooney will be keen to impress in his new role as manager and so hopefully the talented youngster can help.

Frustrated United terminate stars' loan deals after just four months

Academy star James Garner’s loan deal at Watford has been terminated by Manchester United and he has immediately been loaned back out.

The 19-year-old is one of the Red Devils’ top young midfield hopefuls and he has already played seven times for the club at senior level. He won last season’s Under 23’s player of the season award.

This was the first season that Garner had been sent out on loan and whilst he became a regular starter at Watford under Vladimir Ivic, playing 21 games, the Hornets’ new manager Xisco Munoz benched him in his first game in charge. Garner has just made two substitute appearances in the seven games since.

United decided to pull the plug and arranged an alternative deal at Nottingham Forest, who are currently facing a relegation scrap at the bottom of the Championship.

‘James is a promising young talent in central midfield and that is an area where we’ve had injury problems and players missing in recent weeks,’ Forest boss Chris Hughton said on the club’s official website.

‘He has completed a good spell at Watford where he has picked up some much-needed Championship experience and we’re confident he will be a valuable asset to us between now and the end of the season.’

Garner is set to make his debut for the midlands side on Tuesday in their Championship tie against Coventry City.

Tahith Chong has had a similar experience as United have terminated his loan at Werder Bremen.

The 21-year-old did manage 13 matches for the Bundesliga side this term but most of his appearances came off the bench.

The Dutchman has been sent out to Club Brugge, where he is expected to get more starts.

Not Upamecano: United make £70m centre-back their new top priority - report

Manchester United have set their sights on Sevilla’s Jules Koundé as they look to improve their centre back roster, according to The Mirror.

The Red Devils have been linked with several centre backs since last summer’s transfer window and RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano was believed to be their prime target.

However, competition for the Frenchman, whose €42 million buyout clause becomes active in June, has heated up and it is now widely speculated that Bayern Munich are leading the chase to sign him.

This may be the reason that United have switched their attention to another highly-rated 22-year-old Frenchman, Koundé.
‘The Old Trafford boss sees Kounde as the ideal long-term partner for captain Harry Maguire, at £80 million the world’s most expensive defender,’ The Mirror says.
‘Kounde has grown in stature since his £22 million arrival at Seville from Bordeaux 18 months ago.
‘The French youngster has emerged as one of La Liga’s most promising defensive talents with skills which have earned him rave reviews across Europe.’
If the Mirror’s claims are true, United will certainly have their work cut out to sign the defender for a reasonable amount as Sevilla are not willing to let him go easily.
Koundé himself admitted he had spoken to Pep Guardiola about a move to Manchester City in the summer, but the Andalusian side rejected a €55 million (£49m) offer and City switched their attentions to Ruben Dias instead.

The Parisian’s contract at Seville runs until 2024 and reportedly has an €80 million (£71m) release clause – an amount that United’s board seems unlikely to sanction in the current financial climate.

Solskjaer provides definitive update on loans for forgotten first team pair

Brandon Williams and Daniel James will not be sent out on loan in this window, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed.

Manchester United have loaned Jesse Lingard to West Ham and are close to completing the loan move of Facundo Pellistri to Spanish side Alaves. It was widely speculated that Williams and James could follow as they have struggled to get game time so far this season.

But the boss has other ideas and confirmed yesterday that there would be no more exits from the senior squad.

‘Brandon will stay,’ Solskjaer said.

‘He played 23s against Liverpool, he needed match fitness he’s been working really hard and we don’t have any other players that we think will be going, we need a strong squad it’s a relentless season and we go again on Tuesday.’

Williams has only started two EFL Cup games and one FA Cup match for the Red Devils this season. The Under 23s match against Liverpool saw him make a bad mistake in the lead up to Liverpool’s first goal and start the second half in the unfamiliar centre back position before being subbed around the hour mark.

James has fared a little better, starting five Premier League games and two cup games, but he has fallen down the pecking order and now has extra competition for game time on the wing after the arrival of the exciting Amad Diallo, who scored two goals on his Under 23’s debut yesterday.

It could be a tough five months out in the cold for Williams and James, who played 32 and 46 games, respectively, for the senior side last term.

Poor finishing or poor performance?: Stat clears up United's disappointing draw with Arsenal

Manchester United supporters may be feeling as though the draw vs Arsenal was a missed opportunity and the statistics certainly suggest that is the case.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men could only secure a goalless result vs Mikel Arteta’s stars despite the respectable amount of chances they created.

United’s lack of clinical edge proved costly in the end with both Edinson Cavani and Marcus Rashford most guilty of missing opportunities.

Arsenal threatened but only in moments and were there for the taking, particularly in the first half with Solskjaer’s starting XI controlling the match.

Unfortunately the Red Devils’ poor execution meant they had to settle for a point despite needing all three to continue their title challenge.

Based on xG only, Manchester United deserved to win vs the Gunners and will be ruing the missed opportunity to close the gap on their fierce rivals Manchester City.

Perhaps if the players produced more chances then one would’ve eventually been converted but this was all they could muster up away from home.

United’s poor results vs big teams has been well-documented and Solskjaer has to find a solution if he hopes to challenge for the title or even finish in the top four.

Worrying pattern emerges for Man United after draw to Arsenal

Manchester United fans were concerned after the draw vs Arsenal and it seems they were right for feeling that way as there’s a worrying trend for the team this season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men were held to a drab goalless tie and unfortunately it meant they fell further behind fierce rivals Manchester City in first place.

The Citizens are three points ahead of United and have a game in hand that could see them extend their lead should they win it.

Whereas City seem to be picking up a real head of steam, United’s form has dipped ever since they topped the table.

Solskjaer also has a problem that needs resolving as fans noticed a pattern has emerged in regards to their performances vs big teams.

The performances against the so-called traditional big six is a little strange as it seems as though Manchester United’s issues from last season and this one has switched.

In the last campaign, the team struggled to turn draws into wins against the smaller sides and it ended up proving costly.

This season it’s the other way round and it may threaten United again with a top-four finish or worse if it continues the way it has.

Fans turn on £80m United man after series of average performances

Harry Maguire had another underwhelming game yesterday evening even though Manchester United kept a clean sheet.

The skipper’s statistics this season suggest that he is doing really well for the Red Devils, but fans are becoming increasingly frustrated with his lack of pace and leadership.

Some of the comments after the 0-0 with Arsenal at the Emirates stadium included:

‘Tired of hearing Maguire needs a partner, yet himself is a liability.’

‘Basta de Maguire por favor’ (‘Enough of Maguire, please’)

‘The reason I insist on change in management is Maguire. A proper manager will realize Maguire isn’t good enough to play in my team much less be captain. It’s because of him we play Mcfred to protect the backline.’

‘Harry Maguire is not a Manchester United player nor a captain to be honest. I really can’t see what he brings to the team. We paid £80 Million for this😬 for ffs he wouldn’t have made it into a Sunday league team.’

‘Man United should be ashamed that Harry Maguire is their Captain 😆😆 he didn’t deserve it, an overrated centre back.’

There were also a few cruel memes circulating on social media, including these:

It all seems a little harsh after United kept a clean sheet away against an in-form Arsenal side, but United fans have perhaps been spoilt on quality ball-playing centre backs such as Rio Ferdinand and Jaap Stam in the past. Maguire is certainly not the quickest but he is strong aerially and a popular choice of captain among the players.

'Settled': Scholes blasts Bruno and co after missed opportunity vs Arsenal

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has perhaps unfairly blasted Bruno Fernandes after the clash with Arsenal ended in a drab draw.

The Portuguese magician has been the club’s standout player ever since joining a year ago yet there remains to be those who doubt his talents.

The latest criticism to arise, besides him only being good at penalties, is that he disappears in big matches.

United fans themselves haven’t felt that’s the case but it seems Scholes has jumped on the bandwagon others are pushing forward.

The former midfielder also had plenty to say about the squad overall, accusing them of settling for a point against the Gunners.

Bruno’s form has certainly dipped a little in the Premier League as he hasn’t had as many goal involvements as usual but Scholes’ criticism feels harsh.

The former Sporting Lisbon man isn’t exempt from criticism but Manchester United overall have not performed well against the big teams this season and that’s not down to just him.

Against Arsenal he covered plenty of ground and tried just about everything to help lift his teammates but unfortunately nothing telling came off.

There have been suggestions of fatigue not just with Bruno but the whole squad and despite him denying that, it is something worth looking into.

Crystal Palace’s Dutchman Patrick van Aanholt is reportedly being considered by the Arsenal uppers before Monday’s transfer deadline – according to a story in the Mirror.

Palace face losing van Aanholt in the summer for nothing with his contract coming up, and the Eagles may just decide to cash-in now.

The 30-year-old would certainly be a surprise signing, but for the right price and accepting he would be a backup to Tierney, it could be smart business – plus Patrick van Aanholt has scored his fair share of goals during his time at Palace.

England internationals misfiring badly for United in Arsenal stalemate: player ratings

Manchester United drew 0-0 with Arsenal at the Emirates stadium this evening in the Premier League. Here are our player ratings for the game:

(A score of 6 is around average.)

David de Gea 6 – Actually had little to do.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 7 – Did well defensively but offered little going forward.

Victor Lindelof 8 – Lindelof was excellent this evening, one of his best games in a long time.

Harry Maguire 3 – Lucky not to be sent off for needless fouls, which were also lucky not to be punished. Slowest back when Arsenal broke on the counter attack, really is proving to be an embarrassment.

Luke Shaw 6 – Decent enough but did not hit the heights of some of his recent performances.

Scott McTominay 5 – Clearly out of sorts today and perhaps should have fessed up to his dicky tummy before the game to save Solskjaer a needless substitution.

Fred 7 – The midfield is better when Fred is in it, even though he is not flashy or full of skill moves.

Paul Pogba 7 – Great first half performance. Faded a little in the second.

Marcus Rashford 3 – Really poor outing from Rashford. Looks great with the ball at his feet running at defenders but then everything evaporates when he gets close to goal. Poor decision-making, passing and finishing.

Bruno Fernandes 6 – Not exactly anonymous, but a strangely subdued performance from United’s talisman.

Edinson Cavani 7 – Two great chances which he connected well with and which would have gone in on another day – it was just not meant to be today. Gave away a couple of needless fouls as he tired in the second half.

Substitutes

Anthony Martial 5 – A little better than recently, but still poor.

Mason Greenwood 6 – Not on long enough to evaluate.

Edinson Cavani has made quite an impact since his deadline day arrival at Old Trafford, but how much do you know about our other South American players, past and present? Take our quiz below to find out!

Man United fans given positive update on McTominay after early substitution

Manchester United fans have been given positive news on Scott McTominay after an initial scare in regards to his fitness during the Arsenal game.

The tenacious midfielder had to be subbed off relatively early in the drab draw and there were concerns he had seriously injured himself.

McTominay is crucial to United’s gameplan in terms of pressing high and winning the ball back from opponents as early as possible.

Alongside Fred, the energetic pair have quickly become one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s favourite partnerships in the team.

McTominay’s substitution saw Anthony Martial come onto the field and Paul Pogba dropped into midfield from the left-wing.

The Red Devils fell short in a match they desperately needed to win if they wanted to keep their title hopes alive.

Arsenal were there for the taking but Solskjaer’s men couldn’t execute well enough in front of goal to come away with all three points.

Perhaps if McTominay remained on the field and Pogba was allowed to remain higher up, Manchester United may have converted one of their efforts.

Unfortunately there’s no way to know but the Scottish midfielder’s absence being down to only a stomach cramp means he should be available for selection once more.

Man United legend says exactly what fans are thinking after Arsenal draw

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has let his feelings be known to fans after a disappointing draw with Arsenal.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men failed to do anything of note against a top-six side once again in what is becoming an increasingly worrying pattern.

United needed all three points if they hoped to reassert themselves as title challengers but instead handed their fierce rivals Manchester City the opportunity to go six points clear at the top.

Solskjaer’s side did remarkably well to get to the top of the table but since reaching there, performances have dipped horribly and so they’ve lost their place.

Ferdinand has always been vocal about his opinion in regards to the Red Devils and he quickly let everyone know what he was feeling, tweeting almost immediately after goalless draw.

Ferdinand’s words are reflective of how the general fanbase feels as well since Arsenal seemed to be there for the taking.

Edinson Cavani was guilty of missing two chances he normally would put away while Marcus Rashford couldn’t put the home side to the sword when he had a glorious chance to do so.

On another day those chances would’ve been converted but unfortunately Manchester United don’t have the luxury of wondering what if.

'Like he's playing Volta': United star ridiculed on social media after Arsenal performance

Marcus Rashford MBE had a game to forget as Manchester United failed to register a goal against Arsenal at the Emirates stadium this evening.

The England man was moved onto the right wing in a reshuffle by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that saw Paul Pogba in the unusual role of left winger.

Rashford struggled in the role and a number of fans and commentators on social media expressed their frustration with him after the game.

Comments included:

‘Rashford easily could have hit that chance first time. Will never understand why whenever he gets into the opposition box he feels the need to start busting out skill moves as if he’s playing Volta.’

‘The last part of Rashford’s game that needs to improve is his decision making in the final 3rd, constantly picks the wrong option. It’s so frustrating, it’s the one thing that’s preventing him from being a world class player but it’s a big thing.’

‘You can’t teach what he needs to go up to that next level. Having a top footballing IQ comes with knowing the game and dedication. You can tell he lacks it. He doesn’t see the picture before it happens. Great players do.’

‘Rashford and Martial are sucking the life out of me. Yes you can go through bad patches but this looks a lot more than that. Just every decision that both of them are taking on the pitch is not coming off.’

‘Rashford has been poor today man. 😩

Amad Diallo gets his Man United career off to flying start with brilliant goal

Teenage sensation Amad Diallo has started his Manchester United career in fantastic style by scoring after 15 minutes of his debut for the Under 23’s.

Diallo has started the Premier League 2 game against Liverpool on the right wing and got his chance when he nicked the ball from a Liverpool defender and coolly clipped it past the keeper.

Joe Hugill made it 2-0 on 22 minutes after a lovely through ball from Puigmal.

Diallo nearly scored another on the half hour when he tried a classy chip when surrounded by four Liverpool players but the ball just grazed the crossbar.

Tyler Morton then pulled one back for Liverpool in the 34th minute with a well-controlled volley.

Diallo caused havoc again around 37 minutes with an amazing dribble in the box when he drifted past three defenders.

Louis Longstaff then brought Liverpool level just before half time after a catalogue of mistakes from Alvaro Fernandes, Will Fish and Brandon Williams in defence.

Streamlining: another United star set to follow Lingard out on loan - report

Manchester United’s 19-year-old winger Facu Pellistri is on his way to Spain, according to The Athletic.

With game time a concern for the Uruguayan following his October deadline day move from Penarol, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has agreed to loan his young star out for the rest of the season.

Spain was always the destination of choice due to language considerations and following some interest from Almeria in the second division, attention has turned to La Liga side Alaves.

‘United are wary of sending Pellistri to a Championship side as staff think the general physicality of that division might not be the ideal environment for a 19-year-old who moved to England from Uruguay less than four months ago,’ The Athletic claims.

‘La Liga represented a viable option, given Pellistri’s mother tongue is Spanish, which has led to his move to Alaves.

‘While there is a feeling he has outgrown the under-23 team already, scoring twice in six games in Premier League 2, he is not yet ready for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.’

The Athletic notes that another factor in the decision is the difficulty in organising the player’s trips to Under-23’s away games. As he trains with the first team, he must stay in their bubble which means travelling separately.

Alaves are currently struggling in La Liga, lying in 18th place just two points ahead of bottom side Huesca.

Solskjaer plays down possibility of surgery for key player

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given an update on Victor Lindelof’s ongoing back injury ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League fixture against Arsenal at the Emirates stadium today.

It has been reported for some time that the Swede has been playing with the injury and Solskjaer has rested him on several occasions. At yesterday’s press conference, the manager was asked if Lindelof is likely to need continued rotation or even surgery in the future due to the chronic condition.

‘Well, I think it’s been getting better and better,’ Solksjaer replied.

‘There was a period around about Christmas, after the Leicester game, that we looked into every avenue. But he’s settled down.

‘It’s a quick turnaround of games, especially now if there’s only a two-day gap in between them, sometimes we have to wait to the last minute to make a decisions on Victor, if he’s fit and available. But he’s improved and hopefully we don’t need any operation.’

The manager was then asked whether he thought the injury stemmed from playing AZ Alkmaar on a plastic pitch back in December 2019.

‘I don’t think it’s going back to the Alkmaar game with Victor. I think he’s been used to astroturf back home when he was younger,’ Ole replied.

‘I think he felt it more this summer, so it’s not been that long standing. But it’s been improving.’

The boss also confirmed at the press conference that Eric Bailly has recovered from a niggle and is available for selection today. One of the two is likely to replace Axel Tuanzebe alongside Harry Maguire in defence, who was pulled off against Sheffield United after the side conceded two goals.

4-4-2 diamond: United will pull Arsenal apart with this fantastic line-up

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that Manchester United have no new injury concerns ahead of tomorrow’s Premier League match against Arsenal at the Emirates stadium.

Speaking at today’s press conference ahead of the game, the manager said that Eric Bailly had recovered from the knock that kept him out of the side’s dismal home defeat to Sheffield United in midweek and will be in the matchday squad.

Solskjaer also told the club’s official website that Anthony Martial was fit despite suffering a shoulder injury in the same game and it was also revealed on the site that Brandon Williams is fit and available again, leaving Phil Jones as the only absentee.

Despite Bailly’s availability, Solskjaer is likely to return to his preferred partnership of Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire at the back and we expect David de Gea to keep his place despite his error for Sheffield United’s first goal on Wednesday. Luke Shaw will return at left back after being rested.

Scott McTominay and Fred were also rested on Wednesday and are Solskjaer’s ‘go-to’ pair for big games. Up front, Edinson Cavani is likely to be recalled. With Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford key players, this leaves just one place up for grabs. Paul Pogba should get the nod ahead of Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood. It is a slightly more conservative selection of a midfielder rather than a forward, and also the strongest player of the three on current form.

This will require a formation change and Solskjaer could go with something of a cross between a 4-4-2 diamond and a 4-2-3-1 that would see McTominay sitting in front of the back four, Fred slightly ahead of him, Pogba drifting out from midfield to provide width on the right wing and Fernandes in the number 10 slot. Rashford would take up the left wing position but drift in to join Cavani as a second striker when play breaks from the right.

This, then, is our predicted line-up for the game:

Solskjaer says player stays a United man 'through and through' despite loan exit

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that Jesse Lingard and Marcos Rojo are close to sealing their exits from Manchester United.

Speaking at today’s press conference ahead of tomorrow’s Premier League match against Arsenal at the Emirates stadium, the manager said that whilst the pair looked likely to leave in this window, another player looks like staying at the club despite not being registered with the squad.

‘Likely that Jesse’s loan deal with West Ham is going through,’ Solskjaer said.

‘Likely that Marcos goes back to Argentina, little bit of paperwork left to be done I think.

‘Sergio [Romero], not heard anything there apart from he’ll be with us for the rest of his contract.’

The boss was also asked if he saw a future for Lingard at United after the West Ham loan deal is completed.

‘We want Jesse to come back here revitalised and having shown at West Ham how good a good player he is,’ he said.

‘He’s just been unfortunate that there were some periods where he had to stay away from us with the Covid and isolation and the close contact.

‘And the rest of the team has done well, we have little to no injuries so he wasn’t able to force his way into the team unfortunately.

‘I just want him to go there and enjoy himself, show how good a player he is and come back as a Man United player through and through.’
