Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League tonight (that is, unless Istanbul Basaksehir beat PSG) after a dreadful 3-2 defeat against RB Leipzig in Germany. Here are our player ratings for the game:
(A score of 6 is around average.)
David de Gea 4 – No blatant blunders as such but stopped nothing and turned his back like a coward for the third goal.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka 2 – AWB’s worst game in a United shirt. Was caught out of position time and again, especially in the first half. Also lost possession a number of times
Victor Lindelof 4 – Poor defending in general and bad passing that could have made the scoreline even worse.
Harry Maguire 2 – Dreadful along with the rest of the defence and the horrendous error for the third goal was just … well, horrendous.
Luke Shaw 4 -Never seemed to be in the right position and seemed to confuse the defence rather than bolster it.
Alex Telles 5 – The least disastrous of the defenders and yet the first to be taken off.
Nemanja Matic 4 – Did not protect the defence although to be fair, that would be like trying to protect an ice cream in a furnace.
Scott McTominay 5 – Tried hard but is he really a Champions League standard player?
Bruno Fernandes 7 – Put his penalty away well and whilst there were no fireworks, he was one of the few players who could hold his head up after this game.
Mason Greenwood 7 – Showed some excellent skills to make space for shots and was unlucky not to find the net.
Marcus Rashford 6 – Achieved very little.
Substitutes
Donny van de Beek 7 – Looked lively when he first came on, making intelligent runs, but faded toward the end.
Unhappy Paul Pogba 6 – Scored again but also played a dreadful pass that could have led to Leipzig’s fourth.
Brandon Williams 5 – Fumbled a few possessions and passes, but at least looked like he was trying.
Axel Tuanzebe 7 – Looked like he could improve the defence, but then so could my nan.
Tim Fosu-Mensah 6 – No fireworks but marking was at least better than Wan-Bissaka’s.
Manager
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 3 – Poor formation selection – too negative, it was always going to put United on the back foot. Player selection also questionable – why not play a proper centre-back – Tuanzebe – alongside Maguire and Lindelof rather than an unfit full-back, Luke Shaw? And why was Telles sacrificed rather than any of the other defenders? So many questions to be answered.
