Chelsea defender returns to training - but that may worry Frank Lampard

Chelsea full-back Ben Chilwell has returned to England training after suffering from back spasms in the UEFA Nations League clash with Belgium on Sunday.

Chilwell, who has 11 senior caps, had to be replaced before half-time during the Three Lions’ 2-0 defeat, leaving Blues fans worrying over the fitness of their summer signing ahead of a return to domestic matters this weekend.

However, the 23-year-old was deemed fit enough to return to training alongside his team-mates, all of whom have tested negative for COVID-19 following the match in Leuven.

It remains unclear whether Chilwell will feature against Iceland tonight and Frank Lampard may be hoping not as he holds out hope for his returning stars to arrive back at Stamford Bridge with a clean bill of health.

Chilwell has made a promising start to life at his new club – in his 10 appearances as a Chelsea player the former Leicester City man has scored twice and provided three assists.

Aside from Christian Pulisic, Lampard could be afforded a full-strength squad from which to choose as the Blues travel to the northeast to face Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon.

Another summer arrival, German midfielder Kai Havertz, is likely to be back amongst the squad as the 21-year-old recovers from a positive COVID-19 result earlier this month.

Chelsea fans will likely be equally buoyed by the news of Chilwell’s fitness as well as worried by the potential for him to play tonight.

There are injury problems right across the Premier League, plenty of which came about during this international break. Chelsea will not want to fall foul of losing any of their key players, especially in a match which now has nothing riding on it.
