Gabriel Martinelli has claimed that Arsenal didn’t want him to join the Brazil under-23s for an international tournament this month (via Sport Witness).
It’s clear that if things go right, Gabriel Martinelli’s future will lead him to full international football with an elite country.
The Brazilian-born attacker is also eligible to play for Italy but has represented the South American nation at youth level.
There was a feeling that he would join the Brazilian under-23s for their pre-Olympic tournament but the 18-year-old has claimed that Arsenal didn’t want him to.
“I said that if it was up to me I would play. But we already knew it would be difficult. It was a time when I was starter at Arsenal, and people preferred not to let me go,” Martinelli told the Brazilian publication UOL.
Martinelli then spoke about the former Middlesbrough midfielder Juninho Paulista who now holds Edu Gaspar’s old job with the Brazilian national team.
“He [Juninho] already called me, spoke to me and congratulated me on what I’m doing. I haven’t been called up yet, but I’m very calm about it.
“We talked a little after he went to the national team. He called me, said that this was the opportunity of my life, that I should give my best because things would go well.
“I have Italian citizenship from my father, because we did it a little bit before coming to Arsenal. So I have the option of playing for Brazil or Italy.
“But that’s just the consequence; I have to keep working here at Arsenal, and only then we’ll see what lies ahead.”
It’s an interesting series of quotes from Gabriel Martinelli. The 18-year-old has now become a key player at Arsenal when few expected him to integrate into the first-team so quickly. It’s probably for the best that he stays with his club rather than playing a friendly tournament.
