'World class': Man United fans and Solskjaer raving about Fernandes' teammate

Manchester United’s midfield dynamo Fred’s fantastic performances this season have seen him showered in praise from both his manager and the fans this week.

Speaking in an exclusive interview yesterday with our YouTube™ channel United Peoples TV, Fred said ‘I want to be a big player and be part of the history of Man United’. And Solskjaer’s comments suggest he believes the Brazilian can achieve that.

‘Fred is a top, top human being… He’s a tough lad, he’s mentally very strong, he’s always positive’ the boss said.

‘I’m delighted with him and now he’s got a couple of goals under his belt as well… Fred has really taken on the challenge this season.’

Fans are also delighted with the 26-year-old. ‘You can’t help but love this guy. He struggled at first. Was torn into by pundits. Now, he’s one of the best midfielders in the league and another United player that the fans love’ said one.

‘Love seeing a struggling player come good. Fred is becoming a Utd legend fast. Because in our darkest hour he stood up…manned up. He didn’t go hiding. Took the criticism like a man and came back with passion. Drove his team mates to follow him too’ said another.

There was nothing but praise for the Brazilian following the release of the interview.

‘Pastor Fred, honestly he is becoming my favourite player at United, so glad he plays for us.’

‘I would say one of the best midfielders in the league at the moment. The lad has been class so far this season. Pastor Fred was criticized and called all type of names but he worked his ass off and now look at him. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

‘Becoming a World class player!!’

‘Fred is Man United’s player of the season.’

Fred capped off another excellent performance against Club Brugge on Thursday with two fine goals and will be hoping to add more to his tally against Everton this afternoon.

And with the arrival of Bruno Fernandes, Scott McTominay fit again and Paul Pogba closing in on a March return, Solskjaer has a problem – who to pick to play alongside the Brazilian. Because Pastor Fred may just have made himself undroppable.

Sunday morning report provides Anthony Martial injury news

Anthony Martial has not passed his fitness test and will not play against Everton today, according to The Daily Star.

Martial suffered a lower thigh strain in training that forced him out of the Reds’ game against Club Brugge on Thursday, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had hoped he would be fit.

‘I don’t know about Anthony, to be honest. I’ve not asked. He tried this morning, so he wasn’t that bad but we’ll have to do a scan tomorrow probably’ the manager told The MEN on Friday.

But The Star reports that ‘Anthony Martial was not named in the squad and was not seen at the Lowry Hotel.’

‘It appears he will not be fit for the weekend.’

The MEN also confirmed that the 24-year-old ‘did not arrive with the Manchester United squad at The Lowry Hotel ahead of their trip to Everton on Sunday.’

If The Star proves to be correct it will come as a huge blow for United. The Frenchman has been in a rich vein of form, scoring three in three as the Red Devils launch a fresh attack on the top four of the Premier League.

Martial’s absence today will almost certainly mean a first Premier League start for Odion Ighalo, on loan from Chines Superleague side Shanghai Shenhua. ‘Odion has definitely shown what type of striker he is… He’s ready for that game on Sunday’ the boss confirmed in the pre-match presser.

Ighalo got off the mark for the Red Devils in Thursday’s 5-0 crushing of Club Brugge and may partner Mason Greenwood up front.

Man United make contact €50m La Liga star's representatives: report

Manchester United are reportedly taking steps already for their summer transfer targets as they take aim at Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Partey.

The talented midfielder has been linked with a transfer to Old Trafford in the past and rumours have now heated up once more.

With Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic’s futures uncertain, United may have to target replacements rather than adding to their existing quality.

The sensational Frenchman is believed to be eyeing a move away in his search for silverware while the experienced Serbian is just hoping for a team who will play him week in, week out.

Partey would be the perfect addition to the Red Devils midfield, adding steel to an otherwise rather soft centre.

Scott McTominay and Fred have proven to be good ball-winners but the latter has recently admitted a preference for being more box to box.

Partey would add expertise in the defensive midfield position that is otherwise a little lacking, particularly against top teams.

His release clause is arguably lower than his actual value and so United should take advantage of it and trigger it as soon as possible.

There’s always the chance Partey is using the Red Devils in a bid to renew his contract but the hope is that the move is actually on.

The reason why Pogba could be stuck at Man United beyond the summer

Manchester United star Paul Pogba may be stuck at the club if indeed he has a desire to leave Old Trafford as some reports claim.

The talented Frenchman has had a season to forget after being ruled out for injury multiple times and his future severely questioned.

Some even claimed Pogba wasn’t actually injured and is just faking in order to force his move out of the club.

United avoided selling him in the winter but there’s a general feeling the former Juventus man will leave in the summer.

However, it’s difficult to imagine who could afford him and it appears Real Madrid have ruled themselves out.

Real Madrid, Juventus and PSG are believed to be the three who are keen on Pogba but none appear willing to shell out big for him.

After all, there’s not much left on the academy product’s contract and Juventus and PSG seem to have their own reasons for not approaching him.

PSG already have a ridiculously high wage bill and Juventus probably don’t have the money to buy him having spent so much on Cristiano Ronaldo recently.

Either way, no club seems serious enough in their desire to purchase Pogba and as such, he may remain at Old Trafford beyond the summer.

Dean Smith responds to reports on Grealish's potential transfer to Man United

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has addressed reports regarding Jack Grealish’s future potentially being at Manchester United.

The talented Englishman has been in the form of his life this season and his stunning performances have caught the eye of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United’s starting XI is close to being complete in terms of being shaped into the image the legendary Norwegian wants but the depth does need some work.

Grealish would probably walk right into the line-up but even if he doesn’t then his versatility would prove useful when it comes to providing cover.

The dazzling midfielder can play in central midfield, attacking midfield and either flank and given the Red Devils’ injury problems, he would prove more than useful.

Smith appears to be suggesting Grealish will leave in the summer should Aston Villa face relegation back to the Championship.

As of the time of writing, the Birmingham club are currently in 19th place and need a win to get out of the relegation zone.

It’s not entirely unthinkable they’ll survive but based on recent form, there appears to be little hope for them.

Manchester United are believed to have stepped up their interest as they look to wrap up the transfer early to avoid a price inflation due to an England appearance or good form in the European Championship.

3-5-2: Man United can stun Everton with this high-energy lineup

For once, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a lot of options as he chooses from a near fully fit squad for Manchester United’s trip to Everton tomorrow.

Other than long-term absentees Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford, the only doubt for the game is forward Anthony Martial, who picked up a knee injury in training that kept him out of the Europa League clash with Club Brugge on Thursday.

The big question is what formation the manager will play. He has been using three at the back lately but with an extra midfielder in Scott McTominay back fit, he could stick with a back four.

Goodison is always a difficult place to visit and having lost 4-0 there last season, we think the manager will prefer to play safe with three centre backs – Lindelof, Maguire and Bailly.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is the natural choice for right wing back and Luke Shaw is expected to play at left wing back, although Brandon Williams could be brought back in after having been rested.

Another difficult decision for Solskjaer is who to play in central midfield. Nemanja Matic has been playing well as the holding midfielder lately but Scott McTominay’s energy and passion and Fred’s box-to-box energy are both important to the side. Matic will likely give way.

Bruno Fernandes is almost certain to start in his favoured position between number eight and number 10.

This leaves two forward berths, one which will surely go to Anthony Martial if fit. Odion Ighalo, Mason Greenwood and Dan James will fight it out for the other, with Ighalo most likely to get the nod. If Martial doesn’t make it, Ighalo and Greenwood is the most probable combination.

Here then is our predicted line-up:

Man United ace opens up about his biggest influence at Old Trafford

Manchester United’s midfield dynamo Fred has revealed that Michael Carrick has been instrumental in his dramatic improvement this season.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Peoples Person’s YouTube™ channel United Peoples TV, the Brazilian claimed that Carrick ‘calms him down’.

‘He tries to help me with my positioning on the field’, the 26-year-old said.

‘He’s someone who always talks to me, which is important for adapting my football to the English league, because when I arrived … I’d be knocked off the ball, so now I can understand the game better and that I have to be quicker and stronger.’

Fred talked about the hard process of moving from another country, having joined the Red Devils from Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk for £50 million in 2018.

‘I think the majority of players that come from other countries that don’t have a championship as strong as here in the Premier League end up feeling that process of adaptation.’

‘Here, all teams play, well, closed in. Other teams make it harder to get near the area to shoot, to get into the area.’

After struggling in his first term at Old Trafford, the Brazilian has been without question United’s most improved player this season and has been one of the standout players of the current campaign. It is an achievement for which he gives a great deal of credit to the Englishman, who himself played 464 games for the Red Devils.

‘Carrick helps me day-to-day, to calm me down. We do some one-on-one training, so he’s someone who influences me a lot at the club.’

Expert blows lid off Man United star's contract talks with Italian giants

If there is one reporter in the world who football fans have come to trust, it is Fabrizio Romano.

When the Italian releases a story, it carries much more weight than your average news report.

So it is interesting to read what Romano says is happening with Tahith Chong as the Manchester United starlet plots his free transfer away from Old Trafford this summer.

The 20-year-old is out of contract in June and has so far rejected the £25,000 per week offer that the Red Devils have reportedly put on the table.

The Dutch winger has attracted interest from a number of Italian clubs, including Juventus, but it is Inter Milan that have shown the most interest and negotiations have been progressing with the Nerazzurri for some weeks.

According to Romano, the Italians are willing to offer Chong a five-year contract worth just under €2 million a year, which equates to around £32,000 per week.

But there are issues to be resolved before the deal can be concluded.

Inter’s intention having signed the 20-year-old is to send him out on loan for the first season, but Chong wants assurances that he is not sent to Chinese superleague outfit Jiangsu Suning, with whom Inter have close ties. Romano claims that Inter have instead suggested ‘other potential loan paths in Serie A’ with clubs such as Verona and Sassuolo.

Chong ‘has not yet decided whether to accept this solution or not, so the other foreign clubs that are courting him are pressing on and have not yet given up’ Romano states.

It also leaves the door open for the Red Devils to make an improved offer for Chong to remain at Old Trafford, although his disappointing performances for the senior side this season suggest that it might be better to risk the Dutchman becoming ‘another Pogba’ and to leave fate to decide what happens next.

Why a City win is essential for Man United fans this weekend

It is not often that Manchester United fans find themselves wanting neighbours City to win a match, but there may be good reason to be secretly rooting for Pep Guardiola’s men this weekend.

The Citizens are set to play Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup final tomorrow and should they lose, the Red Devils’ top transfer target Jack Grealish would be much more likely to stay at Villa Park.

Grealish is a lifelong Villa fan and would like to realise his football dreams with his home club, but with the Midlands outfit facing relegation it has been looking more and more likely that he would need to move on to play on the biggest stages.

However, a win against City tomorrow could change all that.

First, it would mean that as Carabao Cup winners, Villa would qualify to play in the Europa League next season, whether or not they avoid relegation from the Premier League.

The 2020/21 season will be the last in which the League Cup winners will get a place in that tournament, as from 2021/22 they will only qualify for the incipient Europa Conference League.

The dream of leading his home side out onto the pitch in European competition could well persuade the 24-year-old to stay in Birmingham, if only for one more season.

Villa manager Dean Smith has admitted it could be a factor. ‘I don’t know. That is a question we will have to answer in the summer’ he said at the pre-match press conference. ‘Obviously staying in this league is probably one of the biggest things that will help us to keep Jack Grealish. He wants to play at the highest level and win trophies.’

The other element to Villa’s potential qualification for Europe is that it would considerably ease the club’s financial problems, with prize money, TV revenues and gate receipts capable of bringing millions of extra pounds to the debt-stricken club. This in turn would mean it would be less necessary to sell Grealish and would put Villa in a much stronger bargaining position should the Red Devils come knocking.

It is highly unlikely of course that the Grealish situation would be enough to see United fans celebrate a goal from Aguero and co. tomorrow. But it could at least be a silver lining and relieve some of the pain of seeing our neighbours and rivals lifting yet another trophy.

Solskjaer sends top aide to scout Sancho alternative - report

Manchester United are considering a move for Fiorentina’s 22-year-old forward Federico Chiesa, according to The Mail.

Chiesa, whose father Enrico played 17 times for Italy, is predominantly a right winger but has spent much of this season playing as a centre forward.

The Mail reports that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sent his trusted aide Simon Wells to watch Chiesa in action in La Viola’s 1-1 draw with AC Milan last weekend.

The 22-year-old has scored 7 goals and registered 5 assists in 22 games this season and has scored 29 times in 138 games for Fiorentina overall.

The Genova-born player, who has been linked extensively with Juventus, already has equalled his father’s 17 full caps for Italy, scoring once. He is valued at around £60 million.

Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho is believed to be the Red Devils’ top right wing target this summer. Scouting of the Italian is therefore likely to be with a view to compiling a list of backup options should they not get their man.

The Reds have also been linked recently with Bayer Leverkusen’s Kai Havertz, who is also comfortable in the right wing role, and Real Madrid’s Martin Odegaard, currently on loan with Real Sociedad, another central midfielder who can also play on the right.

Fernandes might be about to play with his perfect United midfield partner

Paul Pogba will finally start training with the first team squad at the start of next week, according to L’Equipe.

The Frenchman has been missing from first team action for most of the season, having suffered a foot injury in his second comeback match in December after an ankle injury had kept him out of action since August.

As we reported here two weeks ago, Pogba’s aim is to be back in contention to play in the Manchester derby, and L’Equipe’s report suggests that the 26-year-old’s recovery is staying on track in regard to that earlier prediction.

Pogba believes that the bench might be the most realistic target for the March 8th showdown as two weeks of full training rather than one is normally required to bring a player back to match readiness after a layoff of this length.

This would mean a more likely return against either Lask in Austria on the 12th March or Spurs in the Premier League on the 15th.

L’Equipe goes on to speculate about whether the recovery timetable will mean that Pogba could be called up for France’s internationals against the Ukraine and Finland, on the 27th and 31st March, respectively, having ‘only participated, in the best case, in only two matches’ first.

Pogba’s importance to the French national side could mean that coach Didier Deschamps will try to reintegrate him and include him in the squad even if he has not had a chance to prove his fitness.

Manchester United fans, on the other hand, will be hoping that Pogba is not called up and can concentrate on getting his fitness back for the important run-in to the end of the season as the Red Devils battle on three fronts, the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Europa League.

Gallery: Giroud and Mount to play important roles? Our four 'Key Battles' as the Blues travel to Bournemouth

Chelsea travel to the south coast as they face Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday.

The Blues come into this game off the back of a 3-0 Champions League loss to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

That game was a reality check for, as it shows just how far behind they are in comparison to Europe’s biggest teams.

However, Chelsea have to concentrate on the league for now and travelling to Bournemouth will be a tricky affair.

In their visit to the Vitality Stadium last season, Chelsea were thumped 4-0 by Bournemouth and the Cherries also bagged a 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge two months ago.

Eddie Howe’s team are currently in a relegation scrap and will be looking for at least a point in this fixture, but Howe’s eyes will light up at the prospect of doing the double over Frank Lampard’s men.

Coming into this fixture with back-to-back home wins, Bournemouth will want to make the Vitality more a fortress if they want to remain in the Premier League next season.

Here’s the ‘Key Battles’ we think you need to look out for…

Man Utd draw Austrian side in Europa League Round of 16

Manchester United have been drawn against Austrian side Lask in the Europa League round of 16.

This will be the first time United have faced the Austrians, who were runners up to Red Bull Salzburg last year and currently three points clear in their national league.

United will play the first leg away on 12th March and the second leg at Old Trafford a week later on the 19th. The final will be played in Gdansk, Poland on Wednesday, May 27th.

If the Reds progress, they could face Romelu Lukaku and Ashley Young’s Inter Milan, Steven Gerrard’s Rangers or only other surviving English side Wolves.

The full round of 16 draw is as follows:

Istanbul Basaksehir (TUR) vs. FC Copenhagen (DEN)

Olympiacos (GRE) vs. Wolves (ENG)

Rangers (SCO) vs. Bayer Leverkusen (GER)

Wolfsburg (GER) vs. Shakhtar Donetsk (UKR)

Inter Milan (ITA) vs. Getafe (ESP)

Sevilla (ESP) vs. Roma (ITA)

Eintracht Frankfurt (GER) or FC Salzburg (AUT) vs. FC Basel (SWI)

Lask (AUT) vs. Manchester United (ENG)

Today's Europa League draw: familiar faces await Man United

Last night’s 5-0 (6-1 aggregate) victory over Club Brugge means that Manchester United are just three ties away from the Europa League final.

Today’s round of 16 draw could see the Red Devils paired against Premier League rivals Wolves for the fifth time this season as country protection is lifted for this round.

With no further seeding, United could also see themselves facing old boys Romelu Lukaku and Ashley Young at Inter Milan. Roma is another Serie A giant that the Reds will want to avoid although Chris Smalling will be ineligible to play against his home club.

Another potential banana skin is Spanish side Sevilla, who unexpectedly knocked José Mourinho’s United out of the Champions League in 2018 and who are performing well in fourth place in La Liga.

Old adversary Steven ‘Slippy’ Gerrard could be managing a side against the Reds for the first time if Rangers’ name is pulled out of the hat.

Easier looking ties, on paper at least, would be Istanbul Basaksehir, Copenhagen, Getafe, Olympiacos, Lask and Basel.

There are no Portuguese sides left in the competition after all four – Benfica, FC Porto, Sporting Lisbon and Braga – were knocked out in the round of 32 this week. However, three German outfits remain – Bayer Leverkusen, Wolfsburg and Eintract Frankfurt – if the latter win their match against Salzburg tonight.

The full list of possible opponents is: Bayer Leverkusen, Lask, Basel, Inter Milan, Istanbul Basaksehir, Copenhagen, Eintracht Frankfurt or Red Bull Salzburg, Sevilla, Getafe, Olympiacos, Rangers, Roma, Shakhtar Donetsk, Wolves and Wolfsburg.

The draw for the round of 16 will take place at noon GMT today and will be streamed live on UEFA’s website.  The first team of each pair drawn out of the hat will play the first leg at home on March 12th. The second leg will be played a week later on the 19th. The final will be played in Gdansk, Poland on Wednesday, May 27th.

Man United turn to sensational German star as Maddison stays put at Leicester

While all attention is on Jack Grealish and James Maddison, Manchester United have a third attacking midfield target who may prove to be the shrewdest buy of them all.

Bayer Leverkusen’s Kai Havertz, a reported target for the Red Devils, has been in sensational form in the Bundesliga this season and could provide the perfect fit for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team rebuild.

The 20-year-old was outstanding for the German side against FC Porto at the Dragão yesterday, scoring his second goal of the tie and providing two assists to send the Portuguese outfit crashing out of the Europa League.

The youngster has also recorded five goals and three assists in 20 games in the Bundesliga this season – not as prolific as his 17 goals in 34 games last season, but still an impressive haul for a 20 year old.

Leicester’s Maddison has been the Red Devils’ top midfield target for some time, but that door looks to be closing completely. The Telegraph reports that the Englishman is on the point of signing a new contract with Leicester, and Foxes’ manager Brendan Rodgers is adamant that his player will stay at the club. ‘The boy is very happy, he wants to be here and he sees this as the club he can develop at’ the former Liverpool man said recently.

Maddison’s inavailability may prove to be a blessing in disguise for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer if he can fend off the likes of Liverpool and Bayern Munich to bag Havertz’s signature.

Apart from being younger than his English counterpart, the German has the big advantage of being comfortable on the right wing as well as in central midfield, an area in which the Red Devils have been lacking for some time.

Neither player would come cheap, with both expected to cost around £85 million, if available.

Grealish would remain the least expensive option of the three but is more of a left-sided player – an area in which the Red Devils have more cover.

If Paul Pogba moves on in the summer, there may be funds for the Reds to sign both Havertz and Grealish. Unlike Maddison, both are expected to leave their current clubs, with Aston Villa’s Dean Smith clutching at straws when saying ‘[Villa’s owners] will be working very hard to make sure our best players stop at this football club. That’s the best answer I can give about Jack’ and Bayer’s chied Rudi Voller admitting ‘I am glad that we still held on [to Kai] this year … We’ll see how it looks in summer.’

Italian giants holding meetings this week to land Man United star - report

Roma have started a new round of negotiations to sign Manchester United defender Chris Smalling.

Smalling has been on loan with the Italian side all season and has become an important member of the side.

The Rossoneri tried to make the deal permanent in January but only offered a reported £13 million for the 31-year-old, with United holding out for £20 million.

But now Calciomercato reports that Roma’s sporting director Gianluca Petrachi has returned to negotiations and met with Smalling’s agents this week to try to thrash out a new deal.

The report also claims that Spurs are interested in joining the race to sign Smalling.

The Roman side are not having the best of seasons in Serie A and are currently lying fifth in the table, 18 points behind leaders Juventus and 17 behind local rivals Lazio.

Despite progressing to the last 16 of the Europa League after a 1-1 away leg draw against Gent last night, the clubs defensive woes continue, with local paper Il Messaggero saying ‘Smalling alone is not enough. All the others need to raise their performance, and not just the defenders.’

This comment alone demonstrates how important the 31-year-old has become to the Italian side.

As things stand, it is more than likely that the Englishman will be sold at the end of the season, with United bosses hoping that the player’s fine form in Italy will lead to a bidding war that will drive up his price by a few million pounds.

As for Smalling himself, The Mail has claimed that the player is happy to wait until the end of the season to decide his future.

Solskjaer confirms another vital player injured ahead of Everton tie

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that Anthony Martial has sustained a muscle injury in training and that he doesn’t ‘know yet how long it will be’.

Martial was absent from the matchday squad against Club Brugge last night, a game in which the Red Devils cruised to a 5-0 victory.

‘He didn’t feel right during the training yesterday, or he walked off during the training, and he is injured so hopefully it won’t be too bad’ the boss told MUTV.

The report claims that the injury is muscular and that Solskjaer ‘hopes Martial will be fit for the weekend but he is not certain yet whether that will be the case’.

Whilst Odion Ighalo’s performance last night suggested he would provide ample cover for the Frenchman should he be absent, it would be a major setback to the Reds’ top four hopes if the injury proves to be serious.

The next run of matches will define United’s season as they are all against top half opposition, with Everton on Sunday followed by Manchester City, Spurs and Sheffield United.

There then comes a run of six games against lower placed clubs before the difficult last game of the season at the King Power Stadium against Leicester.

After a patchy season, Martial has found a rich vein of form since the arrival of Bruno Fernandes and has scored in his last three outings. He is already on 15 goals for the season, which is his best haul since 2015/16, his first season at Old Trafford, when he scored 18 in all competitions.

Man United fans ecstatic for this hardworking goalscorer after Brugge win

Manchester United fans couldn’t contain their delight when it came to Odion Ighalo scoring his first goal on his full debut for the club.

The talented Nigerian made two substitute appearances in the past but was finally handed a start in the wake of Anthony Martial‘s knock in training.

It’s safe to say Ighalo made use of his first start, netting a poacher’s effort and could’ve potentially had a second.

Fans were equally impressed with his ability to hold up the ball and couldn’t be happier with his tireless display.

Ighalo did look fatigued towards the end of the convincing win vs Club Brugge but that is natural for someone who has been out of action for a while.

It was probably Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plan to ease Ighalo into matters, slowly handing him more and more minutes but it all worked out in the end.

The hope is that Martial will be deemed fit for Sunday so that the former Watford man can take a well-earned rest.

If Ighalo can break into double figures before his loan spell is up then his move will have to be undoubtedly considered to be a great success.

Arsenal lost 2-1 to Olympiakos as they suffered an early Europa League exit at the Emirates.

Team News – Match Reports – Player Ratings
Match: Arsenal (1-0) Olympiakos
Venue: Emirates Stadium
Kick-Off (UK Time): 20:00 27/02/2020

Here’s how we rate Mikel Arteta and the Arsenal players:

Mikel Arteta – 2

It was his worst night as Arsenal head coach by far. Mikel Arteta’s side just didn’t look right all night long and his changes did little to change that fact. Gabriel Martinelli was the brightest spark after coming off the bench but that change came about 60 minutes too late.

Bernd Leno – 4

Bernd Leno was poor. He made a woeful error trying to play the ball out from the back with 10 minutes left on the clock in the lead-up to that second Olympiakos goal.

Hector Bellerin – 4

He had a poor match. Hector Bellerin was run ragged at times defensively down that right flank and was opened up for the move that led to the first goal of the match. He offered little offensively and his link-up play with Pepe was non-existent.

Sub: Joe Willock (84′) – 4

He offered very little on the night.

Shkodran Mustafi – 7

He was generally very good tonight. Shkodran Mustafi covered well down that right flank and got in the way of so many shots and crosses.

Sub: Sokratis (104′) – 5

He should’ve done better for that second goal.

David Luiz – 6

David Luiz had a good night at the back. The Brazilian was sound defensively but he will be a little frustrated with his offering in possession. He just couldn’t get things right with the ball at his feet.

Bukayo Saka – 5

Bukayo Saka did well enough and had a few flashes of quality but he didn’t look 100% for this match. He showed signs of fatigue, particularly as the match went on.

Dani Ceballos – 4

He was one of the better Arsenal players on the ball today but Dani Ceballos just couldn’t make an impact on the match. He was playing a little too deep to create anything in the way of opportunities for his teammates.

Sub: Lucas Torreira (72′) – 5

Lucas Torreira did well in midfield. He moved the ball well and got around the pitch to try and win it back.

Granit Xhaka – 4

Granit Xhaka started this one slowly and looked off the pace for early portions of this match. But the Swiss midfielder grew into it and started to make an impression. His passing was a little crisper as his influence grew.

Mesut Ozil – 3

Much like Granit Xhaka, Mesut Ozil started this one slowly with some really wasteful moments in possession. He did improve as the match went on but he didn’t do anywhere near enough on the night.

Nicolas Pepe – 6.5

He was by far the liveliest attacking player in red on the night but it was such a frustrating performance at times from Nicolas Pepe. He overcomplicated things far too often and produced some careless passes that hurt the team. Still, Pepe was at the centre of most of Arsenal’s best moves tonight and produced the Gunners’ first shot on target almost by himself.

Alexandre Lacazette – 2

He had a poor night. Alexandre Lacazette was too static and sloppy on the rare occasions he did find the ball at his feet. He made next to no impact on the match.

Sub: Gabriel Martinelli (105′) – 6

He did more in 15 minutes than Lacazette did in 105.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 4

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang grabbed that wonderful goal but his performance will be remembered for that incredible miss in added time. He had all the goal to aim at and fluffed the easiest chance of the night.

Arsenal were knocked out of the Europa League after losing 2-1 at home to Olympiakos

Team News – Match Reports – Player Ratings
Match: Arsenal (1-0) Olympiakos

Kick-Off (UK Time): 20:00 27/02/2020

It was a strong and confident start to the match from Arsenal. The Gunners moved the ball around the pitch well but it took some time before they could turn that into anything in the way of an opening goal.

The best chance in the opening exchanges came when Nicolas Pepe broke clear through on goal. The Ivorian was barrelling down on goal when he was brought down by two Olympiakos defenders at the same time. Pepe clipped the resulting free-kick just over the bar.

But things got a little sloppier for the Gunners after that. There were some wayward passes as the tempo dropped and Olympiakos grew into the match.

But suddenly, things kicked up a gear. Granit Xhaka slid a fine pass through for Bukayo Saka down the left flank. The Englishman’s cross was pinpoint and Alexandre Lacazette put it into the back of the net. Unfortunately, Saka was offside and the goal was disallowed.

Arsenal looked to impose themselves on the game after the halftime break. There were a couple of decent openings for them but again, the final pass eluded the Gunners.

But Olympiakos grew into it and started to find some joy down Arsenal’s right. They won a corner after breaking past Hector Bellerin and when the ball came in, Pape Cisse was left with a free header from 6 yards out to score with ease.

Suddenly, the tie was level and Arsenal knew they would need to outscore their opponents from then on. They didn’t look like doing it when Olympiakos defender Kostas Tsimikas broke clear and forced a decent save from Bernd Leno.

It took 75 minutes for Arsenal to get their first shot on target. Xhaka pinged a ball out to Pepe who cut back onto his left foot and powered his shot towards goal. From the rebound, the ball came back in for Lacazette who mistimed his opening from close range.

But still, the Gunners couldn’t find a way back into the game as normal time ticked away. With the scorelines tied, the match went into extra time.

The first half of extra time continued in very much the same way as regular time. The Gunners moved the ball around at a slow pace and struggled to create opportunities.

Again, they left space open at the other end and after the extra time break, Olympiakos broke clear and were unfortunate not to make it 2-0 on the night.

The match needed a moment of quality and it took 112 minutes on the night for it to come. A cross came in from the right flank and was flicked into the air by Gabriel Martinelli. The ball came down for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and with his first real opening of the match, the forward produced a wonderful overhead kick to make it 2-1 on aggregate.

It was just a case of seeing the game out for Arsenal against an Olympiakos side that looked like it had all of the stuffing knocked out of it. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be. A corner was cleared and from the resulting loose ball, the cross came into the box and Youssef El-Arabi tapped in to make it 1-2 on the night and 2-2 on aggregate.

But it looked like it would all be undone in added time of extra time. The ball rebounded off Olympiakos defenders and bounced straight into the path of Aubameyang. The Gunners captain was 5 yards out from goal and just had to pick his spot but he fluffed the chance well wide with what was one of the last kicks of the tie.

Scholes weighs in on "sensational" midfielder's performance vs Club Brugge

Manchester United great Paul Scholes has had his say on new signing Bruno Fernandes and it’s safe to say he reiterates how the fans feel.

The talented Portuguese starred once more as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men comfortably defeated Club Brugge in the Round of 32 of the Europa League.

Scholes has often been one of United’s harshest critics but actually had kind words for Bruno in what is a change in tone.

Supporters couldn’t be happier with their midfield magician and the hope is he remains fit and firing for the rest of the season.

Such is Bruno’s form that Paul Pogba’s absence isn’t being felt as much as it was in the past.

In terms of why no one else came for him, there were pretty solid reports of Tottenham failing in their pursuit to sign him in the summer.

Barcelona were also said to be keen but nothing came of it as Manchester United wrapped up the transfer instead.

The big question is definitely why Solskjaer’s side didn’t bring in Bruno in the summer and save the fans from some of the heartache they’ve experienced this season.

Had he been signed earlier, perhaps United would’ve been comfortably in the top-four instead of fighting to get in.

2 goals, 1 assist: Man United's midfield maestro superb vs Club Brugge

Manchester United’s midfield general Fred put in a man-of.the-match performance against Club Brugge tonight.

The Brazilian scored two goals and was involved everywhere across the pitch as the Reds trounced 10-man Bruges 5-0 (6-1 on aggregate).

He also registered an assist for Scott McTominay in the first half after a great dribble.

Fred completed 100% of his dribbles, enjoyed 91% pass accuracy and completed an impressive 82% of his final third passes, with 7 out of 8 long passes.

He was also solid defensively, winning 2 out of 2 tackles and making six recoveries.

What statistics cannot reflect is the boundless energy of the 26 year old, who covered every blade of grass despite the tie being effectively over after Bruno Fernandes’ penalty put United 2-1 up against a 10-man Belgian side missing three of their top stars.

Against most fans’ expectations at the start of the season, Fred could be a surprise contender for player of the season and has without doubt become an incredibly important component of this resurgent Manchester United side.

With all the recent publicity about whether some of the current squad is good enough to play for Man United, why not remind yourself of some of the worst flops to ever appear at the Theatre of Dreams by doing our quiz below?

Player ratings: Man United 4-0 (5-1 agg) Club Brugge - Maestro Mata inspires United

Sergio Romero 7 – Had very little to do.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 7 – A solid performance.

Eric Bailly 7 – His partnership with Maguire looks a lot more natural than Maguire/Lindelof. Would be interesting to see it being tested against tougher opposition.

Harry Maguire 7 – Looks much more poised and confident than a few weeks ago.

Luke Shaw 7 – Had a good game.

Scott McTominay 8 – Great to have McSauce’s energy back in midfield, and scored a cracker to boot.

Fred 9 – Such an important player now for the Reds. Great contribution to 3rd goal and thoroughly deserved fourth and fifth.

Bruno Fernandes 8 – Another great performance, another great penalty and an incredible influence on the United side. Looking like the signing of the century.

Juan Mata 9 – The little magician still has such a quick brain even though the legs have slowed. His understanding with Fernandes was instant and at times the Spaniard looked like he was conducting an orchestra.

Daniel James 6 – A slightly better 45 minutes than in recent games but the Welshman is still lacking confidence.

Odion Ighalo 8 – A very professional centre forward performance and a good poacher’s goal for the Nigerian.

Substitutes

Tahith Chong 5 – Looked like another disappointing performance until a last minute assist saved the day for the Dutchman.

Jesse Lingard 7 – Like Chong, it was another poor performance until a good assist for Fred’s goal.

Mason Greenwood 7 – A good 20 minutes from Mason.

Man United fans lose their minds over brilliant midfield performance

Manchester United fans have still not gotten used to Bruno Fernandes’ brilliance, leaving them thoroughly pleased with his stunning performance vs Club Brugge.

The Portuguese magician scored to continue the bright start to his career at Old Trafford, though it’s safe to say supporters were more impressed with other aspects of his game.

Bruno’s playmaking ability has been central to United’s upturn in form and the hope is he can continue to inspire them as the season reaches its final third.

The former Sporting Lisbon man will be needed fit and firing if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are to have any hope of achieving a top-four finish in the league.

If they don’t do that then their only other option is to win the Europa League and with Bruno leading the way with a big victory vs Brugge, the Red Devils took one step closer to the trophy.

Expectations are rising with each game on Bruno but it’s safe to say he’s exceeded them so far much to the delight of fans.

Technically speaking the 25-year-old should be allowed time to adjust to his new surroundings, especially if his form dips off should he feel the intensity of the Premier League.

It’s Mikel Arteta’s first European match as head coach at the Emirates Stadium as the Gunners welcome Olympiakos.

Arsenal carry a 1-0 lead from the first leg and they know that anything other than a defeat will send them through to the last 16.

It’s a winnable match as the Gunners learned last week but Olympiakos are certainly no pushovers.

The Greek side actually won the last time they played at the Emirates Stadium – a 3-2 Champions League defeat for the Gunners back in 2015.

But Arteta will be hoping for a better showing this time around as he hopes to go all the way in this competition and reach next season’s UEFA Champions League as a result.

The team news is in and here’s how the two sides line up:

Arsenal

Bernd Leno

Hector Bellerin

Shkodran Mustafi

David Luiz

Bukayo Saka

Dani Ceballos

Granit Xhaka
