Chelsea could face competition from Man City and United in race to sign Champions League striker

Chelsea look set to face increased competition from the likes of Man City and Man United in the race to sign Lyon striker Moussa Dembele, according to a report from the Daily Mail.

The Mail say that City, United, West Ham and Newcastle all had scouts watching the 23-year-old in action for Lyon during 2-1 win against Bordeaux over the weekend.

Dembele has been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea this month, with the Telegraph naming the Frenchman as one of the strikers that the Blues ‘are considering’.

Should Chelsea be worried by the rising interest from the likes of Man United and City? I don’t think so. When you take a look at Man City’s striking options, they already have Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus to call upon, which could make Dembele their third-choice if he makes a move to the Etihad.

Likewise at Old Trafford, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been rotating between Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford to lead the line. While a consistent, out and out centre-forward might benefit Man United, there is still a wealth of competition that could raise concerns over the amount of game time that Dembele might get.

Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, Ian McGarry revealed that game time would play a key role in deciding Dembele’s next move.

The sticking point here is Dembele, at 23, feels he needs to go to a club where he’ll play and get game-time.

The picture isn’t so clear at Stamford Bridge, which is why I think this could be a more appealing move for Dembele. The Daily Mail claims that Chelsea could listen to offers for both Michy Batshuayi and Olivier Giroud this month, and should they both leave the club – the Blues would be left with just Tammy Abraham up front.
