‘Beyond embarrassing’: Fans and press slam Man United’s chaotic last ditch striker search

Manchester United’s mad scramble for a striker in the last 24 hours of the transfer window underlines the club’s dire need for a director of football.

The club were reportedly in discussions over the transfer of a number of players such as Bournemouth’s Joshua King and Southampton’s Danny Ings before finally landing the services of former Watford man Odion Ighalo at the 11th hour.

Fans, pundits and members of the press were left baffled as to why a proper shortlist hadn’t been drawn up and researched weeks ago – something a director of football would be sure to have done.

The Red Devils had known since August that a new striker would be needed after selling Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan.

Clearly the first choice was Norwegian starlet Erling Braut Haaland, who appeared close to joining United before ultimately signing for Borussia Dortmund instead.

That decision, though, was made on December 29th – over a month ago – so even if Haaland was the only name on the shortlist – which would have been strange in itself – there should still have been plenty of time to line up an alternative and avoid the knee-jerk antics that occurred yesterday.

In fairness, that alternative may have been French Under 21 international Jean-Kevin Augustin. He was snapped up by Leeds United earlier this week after ‘Manchester United came to the table far too late and in a far too disorganised way’, as The Athletic reporter David Ornstein noted.

Marcus Rashford’s back injury made the search for a striker more urgent, but that, again, occurred 16 days ago – more than enough time to have lined up a bid for a replacement before now.

Because United left it until the last minute to make a move for the likes of Ings and King, their offers were turned down because the selling clubs were left with no time to find a replacement.

Renowned reporter Sam Pilger amply summed up United’s farcical transfer dealings, saying ‘Selling Romelu Lukaku and looking to replace him 5 months later with Josh King on deadline day doesn’t do much to convince there’s a brilliant transfer masterplan’.

And when executive vice chairman Ed Woodward did finally bag 30-year-old Ighalo, many fans showed their displeasure at the signing.

Whether or not a director of football will finally be appointed after another chaotic window remains to be seen. Names such as Antero Henrique and former Red Jordi Cruyff have been linked with the post, but to date executive vice chairman Ed Woodward has proven reluctant to allow the reins of power over transfers to be passed to someone outside of his inner circle.

Man United confirm signing of childhood Yorke and Cole fan

Manchester United have signed Odion Ighalo on loan from Chinese side Shanghai Greenland Shenhua.

After seeing a deadline day bid to sign Bournemouth’s Joshua King fail, The Red Devils turned to the former Watford striker and closed the deal in the final hour of the transfer window. He joins the club until the end of the season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was desperate to bolster his attacking forces after the transfer of Romelu Lukaku, loan of Alexis Sanchez and injury to Marcus Rashford.

Ighalo has Premier League experience, having scored 40 goals in 100 games for the Hornets. He has also played in Norway with Lyn Oslo (9 goals in 20 games), in Italy with Udinese (1 goal in 8 games) and in Spain with Granada (13 goals in 73 games).

He has scored 10 goals in 19 games for Shanghai this season and netted 36 in 55 games last season for Changchun Yatai.

The Chinese Superleague has been suspended due to the coronavirus, and the Shanghai club were keen to share some of the player’s £300,000 per week salary in the coming weeks.

Ighalo is a childhood United fan. ‘They were my team growing up. I loved watching Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke on TV. They were my idols and playing at Old Trafford has always been a dream’ he told The Sun in 2016.

The 30-year-old will be the first Nigerian international to play for United’s first eleven. His loan fee is said to be £3m and United will pay him just over £100,000-a-week – a third of his wages – until the end of the season. There is understood to be no option to buy in the deal.

The club officially announced the loan just after midnight.

The player will not be available for selection for today’s game against Wolves as he is awaiting clearance to travel from China.

Sky Sports: Man United agree loan deal for former Premier League striker

Manchester United have agreed a loan deal with Chinese side Shanghai Greenland Shenhua for Odion Ighalo, according to Sky Sports.

The Red Devils will sign the former Watford striker until the end of the season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was desperate to bolster his attacking forces after the transfer of Romelu Lukaku, loan of Alexis Sanchez and injury to Marcus Rashford.

Ighalo, 30, has Premier League experience, having scored 40 goals in 100 games for the Hornets. He has also played in Norway with Lyn Oslo (9 goals in 20 games), in Italy with Udinese (1 goal in 8 games) and in Spain with Granada (13 goals in 73 games)

The Chinese Superleague has been suspended due to the coronavirus, and the Shanghai club were keen to share some of the player’s £300,000 per week salary in the coming weeks.

Spurs were also linked with a last minute swoop for the player but their offer has been turned down.

Ighalo grew up supporting the Reds and his childhood heroes were Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole. ‘“I’m not sure I’d say no if United called. They were my team growing up. I loved watching Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke on TV. They were my idols and playing at Old Trafford has always been a dream’ he told The Sun in 2016. He will be the first Nigerian international to have played for United’s first team.

United fans are unimpressed with the potential signing and have taken to social media to express their displeasure.

If the deal goes through, it is unlikely that the player will be available for selection for tomorrow’s game against Wolves as he is awaiting clearance to travel from China.

Fabrizio Romano: personal terms agreed, Man United try to sign striker before deadline

Manchester United have agreed personal terms for a loan deal with Chinese side Shanghai Greenland Shenhua’s Odion Ighalo, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Red Devils are hoping to sign the former Watford striker until the end of the season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side is threadbare in terms of strikers after the transfer of Romelu Lukaku, loan of Alexis Sanchez and injury to Marcus Rashford.

Ighalo, 30, has Premier League experience, having scored 40 goals in 100 games for the Hornets.

The Chinese Superleague has been suspended due to the coronavirus, and the player is keen to return to the UK.

Spurs were also linked with a last minute swoop for the player but their offer has been turned down.

United fans are unimpressed with the potential signing and have taken to social media to express their displeasure.

If the deal goes through, it is unlikely that the player will be available for selection for tomorrow’s game against Wolves as he is awaiting clearance to travel from China.

Man United's second signing of January transfer window confirmed

Manchester United have officially announced the signing of Southend keeper Nathan Bishop.

The 20-year-old has joined the Red Devils on a two-and-a-half year deal.

Bishop has made 39 appearances for the Essex club and has also played once for the England under 20’s side.

‘The opportunity to join Manchester United is a dream come true,’ the Hillingdon-born player said. ‘This club has a great record of developing goalkeepers and I cannot wait to work with the coaches here to improve every single day.’

Bishop joins a burgeoning group of goalkeepers at Old Trafford including David de Gea, Sergio Romero, Lee Grant, Joel Pereira, Dean Henderson, Matej Kovar, Kieran O’Hara, Paul Woolston and Jacob Carney. Pereira is currently on loan at Hearts, Henderson at Sheffield United and O’Hara at Burton Albion.

Mikel Arteta has said he is very happy with his two new players after Arsenal completed the double loan signings of Cedric Soares and Pablo Mari (via Arsenal.com).

It’s been a busy few days for Arsenal in the transfer market as the Gunners completed two loan deals.

Defenders Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares joined from Flamengo and Southampton respectively on season-long loan deals.

The Gunners are believed to have agreed on an option to sign Mari permanently in the summer and Cedric is a free agent in a few months.

Now, head coach Mikel Arteta has spoken about the defensive reinforcements that will hopefully help the Gunners in the months to come.

“We found two players that we believe can be very useful and improve our squad, obviously with the resources we had as a club. We are happy with what we’ve done,” Arteta said in his pre-match press conference.

“He’s [Cedric] a player who’s got a big experience. He’s played in different countries, he’s played in this league, he knows what it means.

“He’s very willing to go to another top club and he’s got that desire, that commitment. I followed him a few seasons ago, I started to follow him and I really like what he can bring. They were the right conditions for us as well to try to improve the squad.”

Arteta was equally complimentary of his new centre-back. “He balances what I want to do from the back line, he gives more options, more solutions, he opens up the pitch more.

“Again, he’s a player that we’ve been following for the last few months. We are really happy to have him.”

It looks like Arsenal have made a couple of solid additions to their squad. Cedric Soares is an accomplished defender and Pablo Mari looks to have a great deal of potential to play in England. The best thing is that both players are on temporary deals so it is up to Arsenal whether they make the moves permanent or not.

Mikel Arteta has been handed a boost ahead of Sunday’s Premier League match with Burnley with news that several key players could return (via Arsenal.com).

It has been a troubling couple of weeks for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal on the injury front with several key players on the sidelines.

A number of long-term absentees are still missing but the Gunners head coach has been handed a boost ahead of Sunday’s match.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and David Luiz are both available for selection once again after their suspensions but the good news doesn’t end there.

The club has confirmed that all of Sead Kolasinac, Reiss Nelson, and Shkodran Mustafi are being assessed ahead of the match.

That is particularly surprising for Mustafi who many expected to miss the next few months with an ankle injury.

“It’s not as bad as we thought,” Arteta said of the defender.

“He’s been having treatment, he’s been doing a little bit of treatment, and we’re feeling positive about him.”

It’s good news for Arsenal. It’s unlikely that all of Sead Kolasinac, Reiss Nelson and Shkodran Mustafi will return in time for the match on Sunday. Still, the fact that all three of them are being assessed is good news for Mikel Arteta.

3-4-3: Predicted XI Man Utd vs. Wolves - Bruno Fernandes to start

With Nemanja Matic suspended, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have little option but to throw new signing Bruno Fernandes straight into the starting lineup alongside Fred in midfield.

At his pre-match press conference, Solskjaer suggested he would continue to play three at the back and so Phil Jones is expected to keep his place alongside Maguire and Lindelof – although Eric Bailly might be given some game time.

Up front, Mason Greenwood will probably return to the bench, with Daniel James and Andreas Pereira the most likely candidates to flank Anthony Martial.

This, then, is our predicted lineup for the game:

"We’ve bottled it", "Very bad window" - these Spurs fans react as Ornstein tweets major Giroud update

Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud had been linked with a move to Tottenham this week.

However, according to the ever-reliable David Ornstein of The Athletic, a move across London will not take place, which has, as expected, been quick to reach several Spurs supporters.

Ornstein claims the Blues have failed in their attempts to bring in a replacement for the Frenchman, meaning they will now keep hold of the World Cup winner past the January window.

The news comes as a blow to both clubs who have seemingly been looking to add to their attacking ranks before Friday’s 11pm deadline.

Giroud has only featured in 192 minutes of Premier League action under Frank Lampard this season, but he now looks to be available at Stamford Bridge for the final four months of the season.

The news of Giroud staying with the Blues was quick to reach several Spurs supporters, who decided to react to the update on social media.

Sky Sports claims Man United preparing second bid for striker: club confirms interest

Manchester United are trying to sign Bournemouth’s Joshua King before tonight’s transfer window deadline, according to Sky Sports.

The Telegraph revealed last night that the Red Devils have already had a bid rejected by Bournemouth for the Norwegian, with other reports claiming the offer from Old Trafford was £27 million.

But Sky are claiming that a second bid is now being prepared, with United desperate to add a striker to the ranks to provide cover during Marcus Rashford’s injury.

King would be a natural replacement for Rashford, being a pacey and mobile forward who can play anywhere across the front line.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will know his 28-year-old compatriot well, having coached him for United’s Under 23 side, for whom he scored 6 goals in 26 games.

The versatile forward played just two games for United’s senior side before moving to Blackburn Rovers in 2013. He moved to Bournemouth in 2015 and has been an influential member of Eddie Howe’s team ever since.

The Bournemouth manager fuelled speculation about the transfer in this morning’s press conference, saying ‘Obviously another club has seen how good he is so let’s wait and see… a lot of these things are out of my control.. I understand his position. I know what Manchester United means to him so let’s wait and see.’

However, at his own press conference this morning, Olé Gunnar Solskjaer played down the reports, saying ‘I don’t think we’ll do any more business. I’m happy with the ones we’ve got’ before adding ‘Sometimes I say something here and something else happens. I don’t want to make speculations grow more. I expect nothing to happen but that doesn’t mean it can’t.’

If the Red Devils do return with a second bid and it is accepted, one issue may be the 28-year-old’s fitness as he is currently recovering from a hamstring injury sustained against Brighton in December.

Arsenal have officially announced the signing of Southampton defender Cedric Soares on loan for the rest of the season (via Arsenal.com).

It’s a deal which has developed extremely quickly in the last few days but Arsenal have finally completed the transfer of Cedric Soares.

The 28-year-old Portugal international has joined on a season-long loan deal from Southampton.

The right-back’s contract with the Saints is set to expire at the end of the season but there is no mention of a permanent deal being announced.

Soares joined the Saints from Sporting CP back in 2015 and has made 117 Premier League appearances in that time.

“Cedric is a defender with good experience of the Premier League, and of course at international level,” sad the club’s technical director Edu.

“He is another strong addition to our defensive unit who will provide our squad with quality. I know he is a player who plays with absolute full commitment and energy. We are all looking forward to going into the last stages of the season with Cedric as part of the club.”

It seems like a smart piece of business from Arsenal. The Gunners needed cover for Hector Bellerin at right-back and they’ve signed a solid player with Premier League experience for a minimal fee. Cedric Soares is a solid defender and offers a threat moving forward in what is a demanding position.

Meet Man United’s special new playmaker following in Paul Scholes’ footsteps

Bruno Fernandes will wear the number 18 shirt at Manchester United.

The Portuguese international has been photographed posing with the shirt by his agent, Miguel Pinho.

The number 18 is an iconic shirt at Old Trafford, having previously been worn by club legend Paul Scholes.

It was recently vacated by Ashley Young, who joined Inter Milan in a £1.28 million move.

Fernandes’ preferred shirt number is eight, which he has always worn honour of his father, who wore the same jersey, and because his birthday is on the 8th September. He has the number 8 tattooed on his right arm. However, with that number taken at Old Trafford by Juan Mata, the number 18 is the obvious alternative.

Scholes played 709 games for Manchester United in the shirt, scoring 152 goals and registering 73 assists.

The 25-year-old and his wife, Ana Pinho have already been made to feel welcome at Old Trafford as the club presented them with a birthday cake for their daughter Matilde, who is two years old today.

Fernandes is expected to make his Manchester United debut against Wolves at Old Trafford tomorrow.

Man Utd fans plan walkout during Bruno Fernandes debut

Manchester United fans have organised a high-profile mass walkout from Saturday’s match against Wolves at Old Trafford to protest about the running of the club by the Glazer family and executive vice chairman Ed Woodward, as reported here on Saturday.

It was originally intended to stage the walkout on the 58th minute in honour of the Munich air disaster, the anniversary of which is on Tuesday. However, it was later decided to show respect to the players who lost their lives at the 58th minute with a minute of applause, and to then stage the walkout ten minutes later.

However, there has been a development that will leave fans torn as to whether to go ahead with the walkout: United’s new signing Bruno Fernandes is set to make his debut for the club in the same game.

The coincidence – if it is one – is a stroke of good luck for Woodward and the Glazer family, who will hope that the fans’ desire to welcome their new star will put paid to the planned protest.

Woodward in particular has come under huge pressure from supporters in recent weeks, enduring vicious chants and having his Cheshire home attacked with flares and graffiti.

Fans are unhappy that Woodward has not appointed a director of football and is too involved in transfer business and footballing matters generally. There have been numerous reported botched transfer dealings, notably that of Norwegian striker Erling Braut Haaland, who is a family friend of Olé Gunnar Solskjaer and had reportedly told the manager he was going to join the club.

The Glazers are also accused of plunging the club into debt, draining millions from the coffers whilst failing to invest in staff, players, development and infrastructure.

Woodward has recently recruited former Sun reporter Neil Ashton’s new PR firm to improve his image with fans, but the move has so far backfired, with articles being published in his former employers’ paper that reek of propaganda.

Many people have even suggested the attack on his home was staged to garner sympathy among the fanbase, noting that The Sun appeared to have a reporter and cameraman present at the scene.

Fernandes’ arrival has seemingly done little to appease the Old Trafford faithful in regard to their campaign to oust the Glazers. It may or may not have done enough to avert the mass walkout and it remains to be seen how many empty seats there are at Old Trafford in the closing minutes of tomorrow’s game.

Revealed: The three exciting names on Man United's deadline day striker shortlist

Manchester United have until 11pm tonight to sign a striker to bolster their injury-ravaged young side.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confessed that he wants a striker to be signed before the transfer window closes, saying ‘We need more goalscorers. We need more goals. That’s a definite’.

The scenario is complicated, with a number of names being bandied about, and with Chelsea and Spurs also in the hunt for attackers.

The highest profile name that United have the most realistic chance of signing is PSG’s Edinson Cavani.

The Uruguayan was expected to join Atletico Madrid this month after submitting a transfer request, but the deal has fallen through at the last minute due to a row over agent fees, according to AS.

Despite reported reservations over his fitness and salary, the Red Devils may decide to pounce for the Uruguayan international, who turns 33 in February. They may however face further competition from Frank Lampard’s Chelsea, who have been consistently linked with the player.

Cavani, PSG’s record goalscorer, would provide a world class, instant replacement for the injured Marcus Rashford.

Another striker who may be available is Real Sociedad’s Willian José, as we reported here yesterday. The 28-year-old Brazilian is also a target for Spurs and would be available on a loan deal. He would therefore represent a safer option than Cavani financially, but would be much more of a gamble from a quality perspective.

Meanwhile, the Old Trafford faithful will probably be relieved to hear that ‘United have distanced themselves from moves for the former Newcastle and West Bromwich Albion striker Salomon Rondon, and Belgium winger Yannick Carassco, who both play for Chinese club Dalian Yifang’, as reported in The Telegraph.

However, other less-than-stellar names such as former Watford man Odion Ighalo and Leicester City flop Islam Slimani remain on the table but would also be hugely disappointing signings from the fans’ perspective.

Chelsea may be willing to offload Olivier Giroud if they are successful in signing target Dries Mertens from Napoli, but it is unclear whether Lampard would be willing to let the Frenchman join a rival club. Moreover, he is hardly the type of player ‘who wants to break their nose to score a goal’ that Olé Gunnar Solskjaer wants.

Long term targets Timo Werner and Moussa Dembélé have both been declared ‘not for sale’ by their clubs, Red Bull Leipzig and Lyon, respectively.

One final name that might be an option is Real Madrid’s Luka Jovic. The 22-year-old Serbian was one of Europe’s hottest properties when he joined los Blancos just six months ago, but he has failed to make an impact at the Bernabeu. A loan deal might therefore be a great option for all concerned, but United would be wanting an option to buy which Madrid would be reluctant to offer.

We therefore believe that if Manchester United are successful in signing a striker before the window closes today, it will be Cavani, José or Jovic who will be photographed holding up that red shirt at midnight.

Sky Sports: Man United offered surprising chance to classy La Liga striker tomorrow

Manchester United fans may reportedly see a second signing join the club before the January transfer window shuts tomorrow.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer finally got his man in the shape of Bruno Fernandes with supporters ecstatic that deal was concluded.

However, United are keen to add more depth to an injury-hit squad and so are looking to bring in one more player before the month ends.

That player is most likely to be a striker and reports have conjured up all sorts of names including Salomon Rondon and Islam Slimani.

Fans were dismayed to hear such names linked with the Red Devils but it seems a new name has been thrown in the ring in the form of Real Sociedad’s Willian Jose.

The La Liga striker could provide much-needed depth but there are question marks over his quality.

There are also concerns Sociedad are only using Manchester United as a way to hurry up Tottenham’s interest in the player.

Eight goals in 20 appearances for a team vying for a Europa League spot isn’t a horrible return but it’s tough to imagine what he would offer differently to, say an academy product.

Either way, Solskjaer has recruited smartly so far and it’s clear whoever will be brought in will only play a back-up role so there’s no real harm.

Cristiano Ronaldo tells Man United fans just how good Bruno Fernandes is

Manchester United great Rio Ferdinand has claimed the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani had only positive words to say about new signing Bruno Fernandes.

The 25-year-old midfielder has completed his transfer from Sporting Lisbon with fans pleased the saga is finally over.

United took incredibly long to secure Fernandes’ signature despite essentially being the only ones in for him.

Barcelona were said to be keen on him towards the end but it amounted to nothing and Ferdinand believes there’s good reason for the interest.

Fernandes is a much-needed signing at Old Trafford given the lack of creativity and it’s likely he’ll walk right into the starting XI.

According to Metro, Ferdinand said: “I’ve spoken to a few of his teammates at national level and club level.

“Nani, my old teammate, says he’s a fantastic player, says he’s perfect for England. Says he’s got all the tools, all the right attributes.

“Cristiano said he’s fantastic, creates chances for him. He can manipulate the ball, take the ball, confident.

“These is the type of things that you want to hear when Manchester United are signing a player.

“So fans, based on what I’ve heard about him and what I’ve seen, I’m hopeful and confident that this guy can go out there and do the job.”

There hasn’t been a single bad word said about Fernandes and that’s a testament to his character as well as quality with everyone who knows him praising both.

It seems Manchester United have made a gem of a signing and the hope is he can adapt quickly and make an immediate impact.

A lot of fans are banking their hopes on Fernandes and as exciting a signing as he is, he must be allowed room to get familiar with his surroundings and so he can’t have too much pressure put on his shoulders right away.

Wow: Sporting fan reveals just how incredible Bruno Fernandes is to United fans

Manchester United fans will be breathing easy today after Bruno Fernandes’ arrival was officially announced and the winter transfer window’s longest saga came to an end.

The talented Portuguese has been linked with a move to Old Trafford since last summer and at times it felt as though a deal would never be concluded.

With the January transfer window ending tomorrow, Fernandes’ transfer was at real risk of running out of time once again.

Luckily that wasn’t the case and although United fans would’ve seen the hundreds of compilation videos of the superb midfielder, it’s unlikely anything can truly sum up who he is as a player than what one Sporting fan said.

Fernandes needs to be more than just a quality footballer to succeed at Old Trafford and it seems he is exactly that.

There have been questions over where Fernandes will fit in with the Red Devils but what is clear is he will certainly walk right into the starting XI.

The lack of attacking quality and depth is no secret and there’s plenty of room for the 25-year-old to succeed in.

Whether it’s as a central midfielder or an attacking midfielder, Fernandes will be given a chance to shine.

Pictures: Bruno Fernandes all smiles with Solskjaer after completing United move

Manchester United have confirmed that Bruno Fernandes has completed a £46 million move from Sporting Lisbon.

The player has fulfilled his lifelong dream to play in the Premier League.

‘For me to now play for United feels incredible, I have worked hard to get to this moment and I can promise the fans that I will give everything for the badge to help bring us more success and trophies’,

‘My love of Manchester United really started when I used to watch Cristiano Ronaldo play and ever since then I have been a big fan of this great club’ the 25-year-old said. ‘For me to now play for Manchester United feels incredible, I have worked hard to get to this moment and I can promise the fans that I will give everything for the badge to help bring us more success and trophies. I want to thank Sporting for everything they have done for me. It is surreal to hear the nice words that have been said about me from players that used to play for this team. A massive thank you to Ole and everyone at Manchester United for the trust they have shown in me and I can’t wait to start to repay that on the pitch.’

Manager Olé Gunnar Solskjaer was delighted to welcome the Portuguese international to the club. ‘We have been tracking Bruno for many months and everyone here has been tremendously impressed with all his attributes and what he will bring to this team’ the manager said. ‘Most importantly he is a terrific human being with a great personality and his leadership qualities are clear for all to see. Bruno’s goals and assists stats speak for themselves, he will be a fantastic addition to our team and he will help us push on in the second part of the season. The winter break is coming at a perfect time for us to integrate Bruno into the squad and for him to get to know his team-mates.’

Fernandes is expected to make his debut against Wolves on Saturday.

Gabriel Martinelli has responded to reports linking him with a move away from Arsenal, saying he just wants to help the club (via Sport Witness).

It’s been an exceptional first few months in North London for the 18-year-old Gabriel Martinelli.

The forward arrived at Arsenal from the Brazilian club Ituano FC back in the summer and has scored 10 goals in his first 22 matches.

He has already been linked with a move away from Arsenal amid interest from Real Madrid but the player himself has insisted that his focus is on the Gunners.

“I’m focused on Arsenal and I’m doing my best. I intend to help Arsenal with more goals and victories,” Martinelli said in an interview with the Brazilian publication O Estado de São Paulo.

“It’s hard to think that until recently I was playing for Ituano and now I’m here. It’s great to see these people talking about me, but I have to focus and keep working hard to achieve even greater things. My father and mother talk to me a lot and always keep my feet on the ground.”

It’s a promising interview from Gabriel Martinelli. He’s made a huge impression in a short space of time and anyone who has watched the youngster play in the last few months can see how talented he is. The Gunners have a player with tremendous potential on their hands right now and it’s vital that they keep him for as long as possible.

Arsenal new man Pablo Mari has claimed that Mikel Arteta’s coaching philosophy means he can “completely change” the club (via Arsenal.com).

Pablo Mari may not have spent much time around the first-team during his three years as a Manchester City player but Mikel Arteta has made an impression on him.

The pair are now both at Arsenal and Mari clearly thinks a lot of the Arsenal head coach, as he said in his first interview as a Gunners player.

“When you build a good group and have a coaching philosophy like Mikel’s, I think he can completely change Arsenal and the current dynamic around the team,” Mari told Arsenal.com.

“I think as a coach he has everything it takes to achieve that, plus he has a very good side with top players. I think as time goes by and with the day-to-day work from Mikel, we can achieve that.

“Mikel transmitted a lot of confidence to me,” he added. “He’s a great coach and he’s changing things at a big club. It’s really important to have that personality to be able take decisions at a big club during such a tricky time and I think that speaks volumes about Mikel.

“In terms of the system he uses on the pitch, I think he has very clear ideas which reflect my own vision of football. I want to work hard every day and every weekend to repay Mikel’s confidence in me.”

Mikel Arteta has obviously had a big impact on the Arsenal first-team in a short space of time. Pablo Mari is a part of that and will be hoping to play a major role in the ongoing transformation of the club.

Southampton manager Ralph Hassenhuttl has spoken about the Arsenal-bound Cedric Soares who is expected to sign for the club in the coming days (via Football.London).

It now looks fairly likely that Arsenal will be signing Southampton full-back Cedric Soares in the coming days.

The 28-year-old Portugal international is expected to sign for the club on an initial loan deal ahead of the expiration of his contract in the summer.

Now, Cedric’s current manager at Southampton, Ralph Hassenhutl has spoken about the player at his press conference.

“The fact is that he’s out of contract in the summer. He is injured at the moment so it will take three or four weeks until he can play again,” Hassenhutl said.

“We had a good meeting two days ago. We didn’t speak about that. I was very positive with his development of his game in our shape, I could also imagine going longer with him but sometimes things change quickly in football.”

It seems like a smart deal from Arsenal. It is on an initial loan deal for a fee believed to be worth less than £4 million to the Gunners. Cedric Soares has a great deal of Premier League experience and will provide a solid replacement for the first-choice Hector Bellerin at right-back.
