Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently compared Marcus Rashford to club great and current world-class player Cristiano Ronaldo.
The legendary Norwegian was specifically talking about their style of play and not necessarily the academy product’s likelihood of putting in similar kinds of sky-high numbers in terms of goals and assists.
Comparisons were already being made by fans after a stat emerged over the similar goals and assists rations the two have had in their careers at the same age.
Rashford himself also recently spoke publicly about the comparisons, insisting it was a compliment from his manager but also claiming he understands he has some way to go before emulating Ronaldo.
However, it was a little naive from Solskjaer to make the comparisons, particularly after refusing to set the talented Englishman a goals target, at least publicly.
The whole situation will create unnecessary pressure on Rashford, especially whenever he performs poorly as it will become a stick to beat him with.
The label will now stick as well with the sensational youngster already having plenty of pressure on his shoulder to deliver regularly for an under-pressure team.
Rashford’s career could potentially take off the same way as Ronaldo’s did but there’s a general feeling his will mould in a different way.
At the moment the 22 year old is putting in his best numbers of his career and he is on the cusp of stepping up a level and going from an influential member of the squad to talismanic.
However, should he not reach that level, he will always be known as the player who was compared to Ronaldo.
Young players also tend to be inconsistent so when Rashford’s purple patch ends, he could be criticised even more intensely with the public’s eye so firmly fixated on him.
After all, the fan favourite has a right to become the player he is rather than be compared to who he could be.
