Player ratings: Awful Man Utd throw away three points at home

David de Gea 6 – Pretty helpless for Villa’s two goals, the first being a screamer and the other travelling at about 200mph from point blanc range.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 6 – Had one of his better games in an attacking sense, providing the cross for Lindelof’s goal, but was limited at close quarters.

Harry Maguire 5 – You would expect more for £80m. Failed to invoke a sense of balance to United’s defence and seemed to be overwhelmed by the pace of things at times.

Victor Lindelof 5 – Scored a good goal in the second half but will be disappointed at the number of times he was pulled out of position.

Brandon Williams 5 – Gave everything and always looked to shoot forward, which was encouraging, only to let himself down with technical mistakes – namely playing Tyrone Mings onside and failing to pick the line of some passes out wide.

Fred 6 – The only United player to consistently show some quality at close quarters. Always looked to play forward, even if it did not always come off.

Andreas Pereira 4 – His one moment of quality came from a fizzing cross for United’s first goal, which demonstrated that he belongs in the final third. Certainly not a central midfielder.

Juan Mata 5 – Had a couple of nice moments to start with but, once again, seemed to interpret the game a second too slow at crucial moments.

Daniel James 6 – At least James, more than anyone else, played at the right tempo, looking to shoot into spaces in the final third. Did not really come off for him today, though.

Marcus Rashford 5 – Made a lively start and forced United’s opener, but his overall quality in possession – and especially decision making in and around the box – was wide of the mark.

Anthony Martial 5 – Never really felt like he was in the game. Engineered a few good positions but the whole game felt either too frenetic or too turgid for the Frenchman to be effective. Should have scored from close range, only for Tom Heaton to save his chipped effort.
