David Ornstein has revealed what he thinks will happen next with Freddie Ljungberg at Arsenal if Mikel Arteta is handed the head coach role (via The Athletic).
Arsenal may soon have to choose between two former players if they name Mikel Arteta as the new head coach.
Freddie Ljungberg is currently the club’s interim head coach but David Ornstein has provided a troubling update on the Swede’s future in North London in the event that Arteta is made the permanent boss.
“It’s a really complicated situation with Freddie,” Ornstein revealed on a podcast with The Athletic.
“Obviously, he was brought into the first-team setup as an assistant, very much as an assistant but with a knowledge among everyone in the Arsenal hierarchy that if something happened with Unai Emery, that he would be capable and qualified to hold the fort.
“Immediately, the mindset is that he could be – either on an interim basis or permanently – be the number one. Then comes this situation where Arsenal’s form continues to plummet.
“They’re in a really tricky situation. They’ve got enormous regard for Ljungberg, he’s conducted himself…to the powerbrokers.
“Now, would Mikel Arteta or Patrick Vieira want him on the staff? Certainly, Arsenal would want him on the staff but really in these situations, it’s not in Arsenal’s control if they’re giving Arteta or Vieira full backing.”
Ornstein also stated that he believes the reports that Ljungberg has been offered a role in Mikel Arteta’s prospective coaching staff are not true. It’s an interesting series of quotes. Freddie Ljungberg is clearly well thought of at Arsenal but his short stint as the club’s head coach may have to be the end of the road for him if the Gunners are to respect the wishes of their incoming head coach, whoever that may be.
