Solskjaer open to selling these three Man United stars this January

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly fine with selling three players this January despite there being no obvious signs of any incoming players.

The legendary Norwegian recently missed out on bringing in Erling Haaland who was meant to be high on his wish-list.

The former RB Salzburg man opted to move to Borussia Dortmund instead after United couldn’t see eye to eye with what his representatives wanted.

With that transfer speculation over, there’s been little news over any other potential buys with Solskjaer even recently stating he will only purchase a target if they become available and if it doesn’t upset the current dressing room atmosphere.

Fans were obviously disappointed to hear that but they may be happy to hear the former Molde man is going to continue clearing out the deadwood in the squad.

According to the Telegraph, Solskjaer is open to listening to offers for Ashley Young, Marcos Rojo and Nemanja Matic in the winter transfer window.

All three no longer have a future with the Red Devils for various reasons and so it makes sense to offload them now.

Young and Rojo have plenty of competition for their positions in the form of Brandon Williams, Axel Tuanzebe, Diogo Dalot and Eric Bailly among other established starting XI players.

La Liga giant interested in this signing this Man United midfielder: report

Manchester United reportedly have another club interested in Nemanja Matic as the race for his signature heats up.

Both Inter Milan and AC Milan, among others, were claimed to be keen on the experienced Serbian as they look to add to their ranks.

Matic has quickly lost his starting XI status since Jose Mourinho left United with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer preferring other players.

To be fair to the legendary Norwegian, he tried to give the former Chelsea player a chance to stake his claim but he failed to impress.

Matic’s inability to play in Solskjaer’s high-tempo, mobile and dynamic tactics ultimately led to his downfall and he doesn’t plan to play back-up to the likes of Scott McTominay or Fred.

Matic is said to be worried about losing his spot in the national team, especially ahead of the 2020 Euro’s and so isn’t willing to wait around to win back his place at United.

In truth he was never going to have a future in Solskjaer’s reign but given the Red Devils’ lack of midfield options at the moment, they really can’t risk losing another player.

McTominay is already out with injury and Paul Pogba has only just returned from one with plenty of rumours about his future too.

Man United turn to Premier League ace after losing out on Haaland - report

Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin has emerged as a January target for Manchester United, according to The Sun

Having lost top target Erling Braut Haaland to Borussia Dortmund, the Red Devils have turned their attention to the 22-year-old in their attempts to bolster their forward line, the report claims.

It is believed that Calvert-Lewin would cost around £50 million.

Despite a wealth of attacking talent being at Olé Gunnar Solskjaer’s disposal in Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood, there is no traditional target man in the squad and Calvert-Lewin could be seen as the ideal replacement for Romelu Lukaku in that regard.

The Sheffield-born striker has impressed in the Premier League this season, scoring eight goals in 13 starts and 5 substitute appearances. He has also scored two in four for the Toffees in the Carabao Cup.

Calvert-Lewin caught the eye when playing for Everton at Old Trafford this month and it was his controversial challenge on David de Dea that led to Victor Lindelof’s own goal in the disappointing 1-1 draw against the Merseysiders.

The Yorkshireman has also impressed for England Under 21’s, having netted 7 times in 17 games for Aidy Boothroyd’s men.

United have enjoyed a good relationship with Everton in terms of transfer business, with the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin, Andrej Kanchelskis, Jesper Blomqvist, Tim Howard, Phil Neville, Tom Cleverly and Louis Saha heading westwards down the East Lancs Road and Wayne Rooney, Romelu Lukaku, John Gidman and Marouane Fellaini moving in the opposite direction over the years.

Man Utd face horrific midfield crisis as injury news worsens

Manchester United were dealt a huge injury blow yesterday when it was confirmed that Scott McTominay would be out of action for eight weeks, according to The Mail.

Scans have revealed that the injury is worse than first thought and the Scotsman is now facing double the length of time on the sidelines that Olé Gunnar Solskjaer had originally estimated.

An eight week layoff will see McTominay missing games against Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea in the Premier League, both legs of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester City and two fixtures, one in the FA Cup, against Wolves.

Paul Pogba sat out the Burnley fixture on Saturday after suffering a reaction after the Boxing Day clash against Newcastle on his comeback from an ankle injury. The player has not trained with the first team squad since although Olé Gunnar Solskjaer has said he expects him to play against Arsenal.

If Pogba’s recovery is suffering complications, it could leave the Red Devils decimated in central midfield once again, with Fred and Nemanja Matic the only recognised options. James Garner and Dylan Levitt have impressed when called upon but only have eight minutes of Premier League experience between them.

Andreas Pereira has not performed well in the role and looks much more comfortable in the number 10 position.

United are believed to be looking for midfield reinforcements in the January transfer window, but with the trail for top targets such as Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes seemingly going cold, the pickings are starting to look slim. Atletico’s Saul Niguez and Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish have also been linked with a January move to Old Trafford, but would not be simple signings to pull off.

United may turn to the Championship and have been linked with the likes of Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips and Birmingham City’s Jude Bellingham.

Man United expected to accept new bid for wantaway defender - report

AS Roma have improved their offer for Manchester United’s Chris Smalling and are confident that a deal will now be concluded in January.

Smalling has been in fine form for Roma in Serie A this season and has quickly become a fan favourite at the Stadio Olimpico.

He is also popular with his teammates and was even handed the captain’s armband by Edin Dzeko in a recent Champions League game, a highly unusual honour for a loan player.

With clubs such as Arsenal also interested in signing the 30-year-old, Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Nicolò Schira has now revealed that the Giallorossi have lodged a bid of around £13 million plus £2.6 bonuses, with the Red Devils ready to accept around £17 million.

Smalling will be offered a 5-year contract worth £2.73 million a year (£52,000 per week).

This will mean the Englishman accepting a substantial pay cut from his current £3.64 million, but he is reported to be willing to do so.

Smalling and his wife, glamour model Sam Cooke, are said to have fallen in love with the Eternal City and have asked United to agree to the deal to make the move permanent.

With Marcos Rojo also reported to be allowed to leave in the January window, the Red Devils’ centre back roster could be reduced considerably. However, with Eric Bailly and Timothy Fosu-Mensah back in training and Axel Tuanzebe putting in a number of mature performances already this season, Olé Gunnar Solskjaer will probably feel he has enough cover for Maguire and Lindelof to grant Smalling his request.

4-2-3-1: Man United can beat Arsenal with these four academy products

Manchester United are set to travel to London as they take on Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal who themselves are looking to turn around their recent form.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men beat Manchester City and Tottenham in back to back fixtures but then went on to draw to Everton and lose to Watford.

Thankfully they bounced back with wins against Newcastle and Burnley but now no one is sure which United will turn up vs the Gunners.

Solskjaer has to sort out his side’s inconsistency issues if they’re to have a successful season but there are other problems as well.

The Red Devils lack of creativity could prove to be their own undoing with Arteta attempting to turn Arsenal into a more solid side.

To solve that problem, Solskjaer may be tempted to turn to Angel Gomes who has hardly featured for the first-team this season.

Jesse Lingard, Andreas Pereira and Juan Mata have all had their chances in the attacking-midfield position and it’s safe to say none of them have really made a claim for it.

It’s time for Gomes to be given a shot and perhaps the minutes he would get would convince him to remain at Manchester United given how his contract runs out in the summer.

Another huge blow for Man United as they miss second January target - report

Following Erling Braut Haaland’s decision to join Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United are set to miss out on a second January target as Juventus agree terms to sign Dejan Kulusevski, claims Sky Sport Italia.

The 19-year-old Swede has been in impressive form in Serie A this season playing on the right wing for Parma while on loan from his home club, Atalanta.

United have been in the pack chasing Kulusevski’s signature along with Arsenal, Inter Milan and Juventus. The Red Devils were recently reported to have lodged a £25 million bid, but Atalanta were believed to have set an asking price of £34 million.

Both Inter and Juventus are reported to have responded positively to Atalanta’s demands, leaving the Red Devils well behind in negotiations. And now Juventus appear to have won the race, having agreed a fee with Atalanta and personal terms with the young star.

The fee reported by Sky Sport Italia is £30 million plus around £7.7 million in bonuses. The Bianconeri are set to pay Kulusevski a 5-year contract worth £2.13 million per season (around £41,000 per week). The player will be allowed to continue his loan at Parma until the end of the season.

If the deal is finalised as expected, it will be another example of Manchester United failing to negotiate the signing of a young, talented and highly affordable talent that would be the ideal fit for the Solskjaer player profile.

Man United legend explains why key attacker could leave

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has warned his former club that any failures this season could drive Marcus Rashford to leave.

The young Englishman is a boyhood fan of the club and so threats over his departure were never really taken seriously by supporters, even when Barcelona supposedly came calling.

Rashford’s performances this season have been so impressive he’s already hit a career best in terms of goals scored.

This is despite the sensational academy product initially struggling when he was forced to replace the injured Anthony Martial as striker.

Once back in a left-wing position, Rashford has gone on an incredible run of form that doesn’t seem to be ending any time soon.

According to Football365, Scholes said: “He’s of a similar ilk. He (Mbappe) has scored 20 goals in the Champions League already and Marcus is playing in the Europa League.

“The sooner they can get back into the Champions League the better.

“They need to do it because when he and people like Paul Pogba are out of the Champions League, they want to play Champions League football because of the quality that they have.

“If they are not going to get it here, then you would have to say they will look elsewhere. Hopefully it will never come to that and I hate even thinking about that.”

While it’s tough to imagine, it’s certainly possible Rashford will reconsider his future at Manchester United should they continue to fail.

The 22 year old has found a sense of maturity and consistency that was previously missing from his game, allowing him to step up a level.

If he continues at his current rate he’ll become talismanic for United and if they don’t match his ambition, the big dogs will come calling and by then it may be too tempting to ignore.

Man United's disappointing transfer plans for January explained: report

Manchester United reportedly don’t have big plans for January much to the disappointment of fans and despite the squad’s obvious need for investment.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have had an inconsistent season so far that threatens to turn into a failure at any sudden moment yet it seems the winter transfer window won’t be taken advantage of.

Fans feel United’s need for a creative midfielder and an attacker either in the form of a right-winger or a striker needs to be addressed immediately otherwise their campaign could fall apart.

Anything short of qualification for the Champions League has to be considered a failure and at the moment not only is competition fierce but Solskjaer’s side sit in fifth place, four points away from Chelsea.

Borussia Dortmund snapped up the legendary Norwegian’s most-wanted transfer in Erling Haaland and now it seems no other transfers will be completed.

According to South China Morning Post, the Red Devils feel their transfer strategy is back on the right track and so they will focus on making signings in the summer unless one of their targets become available in the winter window.

It’s obviously a strategy that can somewhat be respected but it’s risky on Solskjaer behalf because if it doesn’t pay off, he could be out of a job before he gets to the summer.

The truth about sensational attacker's conversations with Man United

Super agent Mino Raiola has revealed the conversation between Borussia Dortmund’s latest star Erling Haaland and Manchester United.

The young Norwegian was reportedly on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s wish-list but a move didn’t materialise as he headed to the Bundesliga instead.

United were always going to be competing with Europe’s top clubs with Juventus also among the favourites.

However, Solskjaer’s connection with Haaland was meant to give his side an edge until negotiations broke down.

It’s believed the Red Devils were displeased with the former RB Salzburg player’s representatives though Raiola appears to deny that was the case.

It makes sense that Haaland would be speaking to Solskjaer more than anyone given the pair’s connection at Molde.

Some felt the deal was always going to fall through because of Salzburg’s transfer demands or rival clubs snapping him up instead but that didn’t end up being the case.

Some reports claimed United did trigger the estimated €20m release clause so the transfer fee was certainly not an issue.

It’s also likely Haaland would’ve loved reuniting with Solskjaer so the only problem was obviously the representatives’ demands.

Raiola was at the centre of that and given their strong position since being wanted by many clubs, it made sense they would go somewhere a club, presumably, wouldn’t mind the demands.

Key Man United star's outgoing future decided ahead of January

Manchester United star Paul Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola has once again discussed his client’s future amid rumours over a potential sale.

The superb Frenchman has consistently been linked with a move away from Old Trafford despite some reports claiming Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid are no longer interested in him.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer himself has ruled out any transfer away for Pogba but rumours still remain with some even claiming the player was faking an injury.

Raiola is arguably the only person who can put an end to the reports given it was his public comments that sparked them in the first place.

It makes sense for Solskjaer to hold onto Pogba for dear life as he’s arguably United’s best player in a squad lacking quality.

This should be the end of any discussion over Pogba’s future but it’s likely the media will still use it to get clicks whenever they can.

Solskjaer was already in desperate need of creative midfielders so losing the former Juventus star is not really something he can afford.

Fans are also dying to see Pogba playing further forward in an attacking-midfield position and that may see him return to his best.

However, the injury he had was probably one of the worser ones of his career so it will take time for him to regain full fitness.

Representatives of sensational 20yo Man United target were in the UK: report

Manchester United are reportedly interested in Benfica star Gedson Fernandes as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues his efforts to improve the squad.

The legendary Norwegian has only made three signings in his tenure so far with the upcoming January transfer window his third of his reign.

Of course the January in which Solskjaer was still a temporary manager could hardly count but he has invested wisely so far nonetheless.

Fernandes is a relative unknown to those out of Portugal but it seems United have been keeping their eyes out on any prospects.

Solskjaer has been insistent on needing to invest only in players that have the right attributes and who are available so it will be interesting to see if this is a transfer that does happen.

According to Sky Sports, the Red Devils are keen on Fernandes this January, whose representatives were in the UK attempting to push through a loan transfer with a £34m option to buy with those who are interested.

The versatile youngster would prove to be a decent cover option given his ability to play as a right-midfielder and central-midfielder and there’d be no risk over loaning him in.

If he performs well Manchester United can trigger their buying option but if he fails then he was no more than a forgotten loan player.

Man United prepare for possible sale ahead of difficult January window: report

Manchester United star Marcos Rojo could reportedly be set to depart this January as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues to shape the squad in his image.

The legendary Norwegian has navigated a rather tricky December quite superbly to get the pressure off his back, although he isn’t entirely safe just yet.

Much of United’s season hinges on them qualifying for the Champions League next season, whether that’s through a top four spot or winning the Europa League.

Rojo has featured sparingly this campaign but the emergence of Brandon Williams and Eric Bailly’s recent return to training could spell the end for him.

Solskjaer has several options at left-back and centre-back now so there’s no real need to hold onto the former Sporting man.

According to Manchester Evening News, despite Rojo being deemed fit, he has been allowed to remain in Argentina following the Christmas break as he is currently on standby with the January transfer window set to open though the Red Devils will only sell if an acceptable offer comes in.

It could be argued Phil Jones should be the one to leave first but Solskjaer may be concerned with the need to hold onto whatever little English talent he has for registration reasons if nothing else.

Man United ready to sign PL sensation for incredibly cheap: report

Manchester United are reportedly willing to wait it out to sign Tottenham star Christian Eriksen despite the obvious need for immediate reinforcement.

The January transfer window is just days away with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad crucially needing smart investment.

United are lacking quality and quantity, particularly in midfield and attack and fans were hoping to see one or two fresh faces.

However, Erling Haaland’s confirmed move to Borussia Dortmund means Solskjaer’s most likely signing has gone elsewhere.

It now seems possible the Red Devils won’t invest this winter at all but at least it is possible they will bring in a quality player in the summer.

Jack Grealish recently hinted he’s open for a move to Manchester United after admitting Old Trafford is his favourite Premier League ground.

The Aston Villa man was the star of the show on his side’s visit that ended 2-2 a few fixtures ago.

Of course United could speed up the signing of Eriksen since Tottenham may prefer to cash in on him than lose him for free but much of that depends on the club.

Meanwhile, reports have recently emerged of Villa’s financial FairPlay problems so they may have to sell Grealish to even out the books.

Van Persie reveals whether or not Rashford can ever be a striker

Manchester United fan-favourite Robin van Persie has praised Marcus Rashford on the back of his superb goalscoring form of late.

The talented Englishman gone up a level in terms of his own game and is slowly becoming talismanic for his team.

Van Persie wasn’t at United for long in comparison to other club greats but the way he was talismanic for the club saw him quickly rise up the ranks.

Many agree the great Dutchman almost singlehandedly won Sir Alex Ferguson’s last Premier League title- such was his influence in his short time at Old Trafford.

Rashford will hopefully be with the Red Devils for a long time and become a legend on his own merit and Van Persie seems to believe that’s possible.

Some fans would argue Rashford can’t become a striker as his form earlier on in the season was evidence of that.

The academy product was forced to lead the line after Anthony Martial picked up an injury and it was easily his worst form of the campaign.

A return to left-wing quickly saw Rashford stack up the goals and assists so it was evident he was better as a winger.

On the other hand, some claim it’s only a matter of time for the sensational Englishman as he continues to learn his trade.

Solskjaer's transfer plans explained after Dortmund buy Haaland: report

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly still keen on adding three positions in his squad despite missing out on Erling Haaland.

Borussia Dortmund beat severals clubs to the young Norwegian’s signature, having convinced the player and RB Salzburg to part ways.

Solskjaer’s connection with Haaland at Molde didn’t prove to be enough with reports claiming United couldn’t agree with the player’s representatives asking for terms that were unacceptable.

Fans aren’t optimistic the legendary Norwegian will look to sign anyone else given how the January transfer window has been played down.

That may still be the case but it’s believed he’s still searching for three players with the Red Devils in desperate need of investment.

According to the Telegraph, in light of Dortmund’s announcement of purchasing Haaland, Solskjaer wants a striker as well as two midfielders.

A midfielder is certainly needed and Mason Greenwood’s recent emergence seems to suggest there’s no need for a back-up striker.

Two midfielders would only be necessary if Nemanja Matic or Paul Pogba depart this January which is a possibility, particularly for the former.

Some fans would argue a right-winger is also needed or an attacking-midfielder, unless the French World Cup winner is set to play there.

Why Dortmund signing Haaland can potentially help Man United secure sensational signing

Manchester United may have missed out on signing Erling Haaland but Borussia Dortmund completing the transfer could be good news for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s pursuit of Jadon Sancho.

The legendary Norwegian was believed to be after the young striker but the German giants officially wrapped up the transfer earlier today.

Solskjaer is also said to be after Sancho’s signature and while it was previously thought of as impossible, it seems to be becoming more and more likely.

United aren’t the only ones in for the sensational Englishman so there’ll be a lot of work to do with probably much of it hinging on them securing Champions League football next season.

Sancho would definitely add some much needed quality to Solskjaer’s squad with many feeling the right-wing position needs investment.

One of Manchester United’s greatest negotiation strengths is that they could pretty much guarantee Sancho minutes in comparison to their competitors.

At Old Trafford, the talented teenager would consistently feature in the starting XI in comparison to the likes of Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Perhaps Sancho will feel as though he has unfinished business in the Premier League or will like to play alongside his national teammates which could also work in United’s favour.

The reason why Haaland's move to Man United failed: report

Manchester United’s interest in RB Salzburg’s Erling Haaland has officially come to an end with Borussia Dortmund announcing they’ve signed him.

The young Norwegian was arguably the most wanted prospect in Europe due to his tremendous goalscoring form this season.

United were believed to be interested with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer having managed Haaland at Molde but nothing came of their connection.

The 19 year old was being chased by a host of European giants with Juventus also said to be involved.

In the end, Dortmund won the race with perhaps Haaland seeing he will get the minutes he’s so keen on getting with the German side.

The Guardian are also reporting the same story as ESPN so it seems to be true which means the Red Devils are clearly learning from past mistakes.

Whether they could afford the deal or not is another story but at least they aren’t allowing agents or players’ representatives dictate terms for them any more.

It almost sounds as though Haaland’s team wanted those terms involved in the first place as they were going to use Manchester United as a stepping stone.

Nonetheless, the sensational attacker was always arguably more of a luxury buy than a necessity with other positions on the pitch in more need of investment.

Juventus eyeing up swoop for Chelsea forward in January

Italian giants Juventus are interested in a deal to sign Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud in the January transfer window.

According to La Stampa, via The BBC, Maurizio Sarri is eager to be reunited with Giroud at Juventus, having managed him at Stamford Bridge last season.

The report claims that he is also showing a tentative interest in Emerson, although they are mainly keen on Giroud.

READ CHELSEA VERDICT

Dean Mouhtaropoulos/Getty Images Sport

Giroud is nowhere near the Chelsea team at the moment, which means that he is currently an expendable member of the squad. If Juventus want to sign him and are willing to offer a decent fee in the January window, there appears to be very few reasons for Chelsea not to sell him.

Tammy Abraham and Michy Batshuayi are both ahead of him in the pecking order, which has left him sitting on the sidelines watching on. This means that he may be eager to move if Juventus are willing to offer him regular game time – or at least more game time than he is currently getting.

The French international will want to keep himself match fit heading into the European Championships for France next summer, which also may play into his thinking.

The post Juventus eyeing up Giroud deal appeared first on Read Chelsea.

Man United poised to swoop for £40m midfield man - report

Manchester United could be looking to boost their midfield options in January by signing 24-year-old defensive midfielder Kalvin Phillips from Leeds United, reports the Mail.

Phillips is valued at £40 million and is also reported to be wanted by both Arsenal and Aston Villa.

Having seen both Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera depart this year and with Nemanja Matic nearing the end of his contract, central midfield has become a priority for the Reds and a January signing is urgently sought.

High profile names such as James Maddison, Saul Niguez, Bruno Fernandes, Jack Grealish and Christian Eriksen could all prove difficult to secure in the winter window, but the Leeds man may be a more practical option and would provide valuable cover in the holding midfield role.

The signing would also mean that executive vice chairman Ed Woodward could allow Nemanja Matic to leave and recoup some sort of transfer fee for the Serbian before his contract expires in the summer.

Phillips has been in fantastic form for Marcelo Bielsa’s men so far this season and is considered the heartbeat of the Yorkshire side, who are currently second in the Championship behind West Brom and clear of the chasing pack for automatic promotion.

'Very underrated'- Man United fans reserve special praise for attacker after Burnley

Manchester United fans praised many of their stars following the 2-0 vs Burnley but they reserved special plaudits for Daniel James.

The young Welshman arrived from Swansea with little to no expectations so it’s safe to say he’s been one of the outstanding performers of the season.

James’ assist vs Burnley took his tally up to six in the league this campaign but it wasn’t even that that really got praise.

Instead, supporters focused on his work-rate and his ‘never say die’ attitude as the versatile attacker provided plenty of firepower for his side.

United appeared to be on the ropes for a bit before James’ vital assist saw them get their much needed insurance goal.

With Mason Greenwood also in fine-form, Manchester United actually have two decent players competing for the right-wing for the first time in a while.

It could be argued an established right-winger should still be sought such as Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho but for now Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can get by with these two.

It’s also useful Greenwood and James offer attributes a little different from each other with the former being the deadly finisher and the latter being the hard-working assister.

Key Man United star out for three to four weeks

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had some relatively good news to provide following his side’s 2-0 defeat over Burnley.

The legendary Norwegian was without Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba in midfield but managed his squad well enough to get all three points.

While the recently recovered Frenchman was just being rested, the young Scotsman couldn’t play in the fixture due to picking up a knock vs Newcastle United.

Solskjaer seemed to suggest it was a knee ligament issue which had fans worried over how long he could possibly be out for.

Thankfully it seems McTominay won’t be out for too long and United shouldn’t be able to hold down the fort until he returns.

In truth, whether McTominay was going to be out for four weeks or four months, the Red Devils needed to invest in their midfield either way.

The January transfer window is just around the corner and while most of the talk has been about the potential signing of Erling Haaland, an addition to the engine room is arguably more crucial.

With talk of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic both potentially leaving, Manchester United face the prospect of going into February with a severely weakened midfield.

In-form Man United attacker scored joint-most PL goals in December

Manchester United star Marcus Rashford has continued his fine form having helped his side dismantle a stubborn Burnley side.

The young Englishman is slowly becoming talismanic for his side and when he plays well, the team often plays well too.

Although it came incredibly late, Rashford’s goal was essentially United’s insurance goal against a Burnley side that was threatening to ruin the party.

Anthony Martial‘s effort in the first-half needed some more protection as the home side consistently threw everything they had at the defence.

Thankfully the Red Devils held firm and Rashford secured all three points, helping the team into fifth place.

Many have wondered when Rashford would finally develop into a top player and show some consistency in his game and it appears that time has come.

Hopefully it’s not just a purple patch but it does seem as though the talented attacker has gone up a level and matured.

It’s come at the right time for Manchester United, particularly with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer resting the season’s hopes on Rashford and Martial.

Both have come good so far and with the campaign pretty much smack down in the middle at the moment, they’ll have to equally do well in the second-half too.

6 recoveries, 2 chances created: Man United youngster steals the show at Burnley

Brandon Williams was recalled to Manchester United’s starting line up against Burnley at Turf Moor tonight and put in a man-of-the-match performance.

The 19-year-old made six recoveries, completed 12 final third passes, created two chances and had a pass accuracy of 89%.

He also liked the number three today, having made three crosses and three clearances and won three fouls.

There has been a three way battle for the left back position, with Luke Shaw seeming to be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first choice and Ashley Young also competing for the berth. But performances such as this from Williams will make him impossible to ignore and must surely put him in with a great chance of nailing down the slot for the foreseeable future.

Fans seem in no doubt as to who Manchester United’s best left back is right now.

Player ratings: Burnley 0-2 Man Utd - Martial and Rashford on fire

David de Gea 6 – Much more commanding from de Gea and a great second half save kept United in the driving seat in this game.

Ashley Young 5 – A quiet performance from Captain Ash, didn’t get forward much but didn’t make too many errors either.

Victor Lindelof 5 – A better performance from the Swede.

Harry Maguire 5 – A much better performance from Maguire.

Brandon Williams 6 – Looking by far our best full back option going forward. Put in a great claim for a regular starting place even though he faded a little in the second half. Ridiculous to be booked for diving in injury time.

Nemanja Matic 6 – Although he’s not the force he once was, he still made the United defence look stronger than it has without him, particurly when defending set pieces, even though he was caught in possession a few times.

Fred 6 – Fred is becoming Mr Consistent and Mr Reliable, another sound game for the Brazilian. 180 minutes of box-to-box energy over 3 days, quite impressive.

Andreas Pereira 7 – His hard work paid off by pressing the Burnley defence into an error and put in a great cross for Martial’s goal. Is definitely finding form over the holiday season.

Daniel James 5 – A quiet game from the Welshman but did OK.

Marcus Rashford 7 – looked dangerous throughout, and what energy to claim his goal in injury time.

Anthony Martial 8 – The Frenchman is on fire at the moment and took his goal brilliantly. Two fantastic back-to-back games from the 24-year-old.

Substitutes

Jesse Lingard 5 – Had little effect on the game.

Luke Shaw 5 – Had little effect on the game.

4-2-3-1: Confirmed starting XI Burnley vs. Man Utd - Pogba not in squad

Paul Pogba is not in the Manchester United squad to face Burnley tonight, with Nemanja Matic coming into the team to replace Scott McTominay, who suffered ligament damage in the first half against Newcastle.

Daniel James is recalled with Mason Greenwood dropping down to the bench despite his excellent performance on Boxing day.

In defence, Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are rested with Ashley Young and Brandon Williams brought in to freshen things up.

Juan Mata, Sergio Romero, Jesse Lingard and Phil Jones make up the bench alongside Greenwood, Shaw and Wan-Bissaka.

Here is United’s full starting XI and bench ahead of the game at Turf Moor:

Man United’s most likely and unlikely January transfer window signings

Fancy a flutter on Manchester United comings and goings the January transfer market? Here are our top tips of where to put your money and when to keep your hand in your pocket.

1. Erling Braut Haaland 6/4

We fancy United to sign Haaland in January, but at 6/4 the odds aren’t great at all. It is being widely reported that Juventus have agreed terms with Haaland and that he favours a move to Turin, which should make Juve the favourites – but they remain at 3/1. Whilst the bookies are probably right and the press are probably wrong about these latest developments, the news might shorten Juve’s odds over the next couple of days and push United’s out to something around the 5/2 mark that would represent a worthwhile punt.

2. Gareth Bale 12/1

Stranger things have happened but despite his world class pedigree, Bale does not fit the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer player profile. What the bookies haven’t caught on to yet is that the chances of the Welshman joining a Chinese Superleague side have become slim to say the least, as a pay cap of £1.1 million per annum has just been introduced. So, if you want to bet on Bale, probably safer to bet against ‘any Chinese superleague side’ while it’s still at 4/1.

3. Jack Grealish 6/1

With Aston Villa struggling to stay in the Premier League and given the usual premium placed on English players, a January transfer would be hard to pull off where the 24-year-old is concerned. However, with the player waxing lyrical about his love for Old Trafford this week and Villa desperately in need of sales to avoid breaching Financial Fair Play regulations, at 6/1 this might be worth a punt – but don’t put your house on it.

4. Christian Eriksen 5/1

Eriksen rebuffed United in the summer and recent reports suggest he is set to do so again, favouring six more months in London ahead of a summer move as a free agent. Whilst 5/1 represent reasonable odds, the noises coming from Eriksen’s camp suggest they should be wider still.

5. James Maddison 4/1

There is little doubt that Maddison is high on Olé Gunnar Solskjaer’s wish list, but it has been consistently reported that Leicester are averse to letting the player go in January. It would certainly take a huge offer from United to secure the 23-year-old’s signature, so at 4/1 this is not a bet for the faint hearted.

6. Jadon Sancho 4/1

Chelsea are favourites to sign Sancho at 3/1 and factoring their determination to sign the player into the equation along with Borussia Dortmund’s reluctance to sell in January, we believe the 4/1 on Sancho to join United in January are stingy odds. This is one to avoid at this stage.

7. Paul Pogba to leave

Real Madrid are a paltry 6/4 to sign Pogba in January which is a strange price considering that all parties have indicated this will not happen in January. Juventus offer slightly better value at 5/1 with today’s reports from Italy claiming contact has been made, but we do not see Pogba going anywhere in January.

THE VERDICT: Look for better odds (2/1 or better) on Haaland, bet against Bale to China or Pogba going anywhere and if you fancy a real flutter, go for Grealish.

It’s been a tough 12 months for Arsenal from Baku to Brighton and everything in between. But it’s not all bad. A handful of players have come out the other side of 2019 with their stock higher than before. Here are Arsenal’s five best-performing players of the year

5) Matteo Guendouzi

He’s come off the boil in the last few weeks but Matteo Guendouzi can look back on a very impressive year. The youngster has developed significantly in the last 12 months and went from being a bit-part player to a key starter for Unai Emery. Let’s hope it continues in the months and years to come.

4) Aaron Ramsey

He may have left the club in the summer but that says more about this current squad than anything else. Aaron Ramsey had an extraordinary few months towards the end of last season and deserves a place on this list.

3) Alexandre Lacazette

Much like Guendouzi, Alexandre Lacazette’s recent dip in form shouldn’t take away from what has been an impressive year. The Frenchman has become a more rounded player in 2019, adding an off-the-ball ability and hold-up play to his game which was previously lacking.

2) Bernd Leno

He’s been Arsenal’s player of the season so far but he doesn’t quite take the number one slot. Bernd Leno is the best goalkeeper the club has had for years and years. He’s one of the best stoppers in the Premier League and has needed to be this season. Let’s hope the club can learn to rely on him a little less in the months to come.

1)  Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

It had to be him. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been in wonderful form in 2019, scoring an impressive 29 goals for the club in all competitions. Let’s hope it continues into 2020 because it’s worrying to think where the club would be without him up top.

Friday 27 December 2019

The stat that compares this Man United youngster to Giggs and Rooney

Manchester United wonder-kid Mason Greenwood has deservedly gotten plenty of plaudits following his goalscoring display vs Newcastle and statistics suggest he should be getting even more praise.

The academy graduate got a rare start in the Premier League having been mostly used in the cup competitions but he made full use of it.

Grabbing his opportunity, Greenwood netted a fine effort vs Newcastle to helped United see out the match comfortably.

The talented teenager has mostly played as a right-winger but that hasn’t stopped him from putting in brilliant performances.

If anything, Greenwood has benefitted from the lack of pressure playing as a winger instead of leading the line for United as a striker.

Jadon Sancho isn’t much older than Greenwood at all but he definitely is the more established player having quickly become a key part of Borussia Dortmund last season.

There’s little doubts amongst Manchester United fans that the young prospect can grab double figures himself if he keeps up his form.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is clearly a fan of Greenwood and he’s such a natural finisher it seems certain he’ll get more goals.

United are certainly benefitting from his performances and the hopes are he can keep it up so they can keep climbing up the table.

Most chances and ball recoveries: Man United's unsung hero of late

Manchester United star Fred may have slowly turned around his reputation at the club with a series of consistent performances but it’s clear he’s not quite yet getting the recognition he actually deserves.

The tenacious Brazilian has received some praise here and there but never really as the standout performer despite statistics suggesting he is exactly that.

What also hasn’t helped Fred is that he’s occasionally been upstaged by a teammate with the recent match against Newcastle the perfect example.

United ran out 4-1 winners and everything positive they did went through the former Shakhtar Donetsk man yet Mason Greenwood’s fine goal and Anthony Martial‘s brilliant brace saw little praise go his way.

Given Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s both lack of quantity and quality in midfield, Fred’s emergence as a consistently top performer couldn’t have been better timed.

In a 4-2-3-1 formation, which is Solskjaer’s preferred formation, this type of midfielder couldn’t be better accrued.

Both central midfielders need to be equally adept at winning the ball as they are moving it further upfield to the devastating front four.

Not only is Fred’s passing clean, he’s able to also create chances for his teammates from a deeper position.

As good as Scott McTominay has been, it could be argued he’s unable to create chances in the same way his midfield partner does.

Of course, it’s been a troubling year for Arsenal, the worst in a long time. It started reasonably well but the last 9 months, in particular, have been disastrous. Very few players have performed particularly well this season but some have stunk the place out more than most. Here are five Gunners stars who had a year to forget.

5) Denis Suarez

It was a brief but disastrous stint in North London for Denis Suarez. The Spaniard was the club’s only arrival in the January window and represented some excitement. However, his playing time was reduced to a handful of sporadic substitute appearances that ranged from ineffective to poor.

4) Granit Xhaka

He may not be at the club much longer but Granit Xhaka has had a poor 2019. The Swiss midfielder has been error-prone throughout and his form culminated in that disastrous on-field outburst at the Gunners fans last month.

3) Shkodran Mustafi

Shkodran Mustafi has quietly had a pretty effective season but it’s hard to ignore just how poor he was last term. The former Germany international made so many errors leading directly to goals with that home match against Crystal Palace coming to mind immediately.

2) Mesut Ozil

He’s been so disappointing this year. Mesut Ozil’s strained relationship with Unai Emery was well publicised but it’s not as if the former Germany international has impressed when he has played. His days at Arsenal are surely numbered.

1) Sokratis Papastathopoulos

It’s not been a good year for him. Sokratis will not look back on 2019 too fondly and rightly so given his performances on the pitch.

Superb Man United target admits Old Trafford is his favourite stadium

Aston Villa star and Manchester United target Jack Grealish has admitted Old Trafford is his favourite stadium in the league.

The talented Englishman has recently been linked with a move to United with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said to be a fan.

The legendary Norwegian is trying to solve his creativity and attacking problem in one go and has targeted Grealish if reports are true.

Villa initially weren’t open to selling but the latest news to emerge suggests they may have to due to their financial FairPlay issue.

On getting promotion, Dean Smith purchased a host of new players and that decision has seemingly backfired on him.

Of course Grealish may have literally just meant he likes to play at Old Trafford or he could be stirring up a transfer storm to earn himself a new contract.

However, the 24 year old must have known the reports flying around about him and so would be naive to make such a simple mistake.

It was easy to see why Manchester United were interested in Grealish as he absolutely ran the show on Villa’s travels to Old Trafford.

The versatile attacker netted a fantastic effort in his ‘audition’ and has regularly been the key player for his side.

4-2-3-1: How Man United can keep the momentum going vs Burnley

Manchester United can make Burnley the first team to feel the effects of a fully released Paul Pogba if they play with the following starting eleven.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are, as always, in desperate need of all three points against their hosts if they are to keep their hopes of a top four spot alive.

In fact, if United don’t want to tumble down the table either, they need a victory as a draw won’t be enough to save them.

Back to back wins and a run of consistency is also what fans have been calling for as Solskjaer has been unable to extract that from his players so far.

Too often the Red Devils destroy one team one week, only to lose to another the next week and there will be mayhem if they drop points vs Burnley.

Nemanja Matic isn’t a popular figure amongst fans due to his lack of mobility and pace but with Pogba ahead of him and the devastating front three as well, it should be plenty of movement ahead.

The Serbian can be tasked to just sit in front of his defenders to provide cover and protection as well as allowing Fred to burst forward from midfield.

Manchester United fans have seen plenty of Pogba in a midfield role and defensive midfield role but not enough as an attacking midfielder.

If Solskjaer can unlock the world class Frenchman, it’ll likely be the end to much of his woes.

Man United slapped with huge price hike for long time target - report

Manchester United are unlikely to continue their pursuit of Sergej Milinkovic-Savic after Lazio increased their valuation of the player to £90 million, as reported by the Italian media.

The Serbian’s exceptional form in Serie A this season has seen his stock rise by a third from the £65-£68 million that United were reported to have bid for him in July.

The Red Devils agreed a five year deal with the player in the summer window, but were never able to reach a compromise with selling club Lazio over the transfer fee, reports claimed.

The fact that the Romans have now raised the asking price even further would appear to have put to bed any chance of an agreement being reached, unless United themselves have increased their own valuation by a similar amount.

The 24-year-old has registered four goals and seven assists in the current campaign and is reported to also be on the radar of Juventus, Inter Milan and Real Madrid.

Manchester United’s midfield shortlist seems to be getting shorter by the day. Spurs’ Christian Eriksen has reportedly rejected a move to Old Trafford recently and other reports have claimed that Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes was never a leading target for Olé Gunnar Solskjaer. Leicester’s James Maddison remains a top priority but is unlikely to be sold in January.

In terms of January signings, therefore, unless Atletico Madrid’s need to raise funds leads to Saul Niguez becoming available, only young emerging stars such as Jude Bellingham are likely to be available to boost the depleted midfield ranks.
