Manchester United have no intention of making ‘big signings’ over the January transfer window, according to reports.
The club has been linked with high profile names such as Mario Mandzukic, Jadon Sancho and Christian Eriksen ahead of January.
However, there is a belief at the club that success in the transfer market comes through signing a player whose profile fits that of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wider long term project.
According to the Evening Standard, the United hierarchy believes that this more specialised approach means that ‘big signings’ are not the priority in January.
The example set by Scott McTominay so far this term has been viewed as a model from which the club should operate more often – signing or rearing players who can bring a requisite attitude to the pitch and develop alongside his teammates.
United have the right idea here. Signing superstars looking for their last big paycheck – Alexis Sanchez, Bastian Schweinsteiger, etc. – has never worked out for United, while more subtle signings, like Daniel James, have shown much more promise.
You just hope that this attitude does not preclude United from investing in positions that require serious attention.
