Manchester United star Chris Smalling appears to be getting closer towards securing a permanent move to Roma having impressed so far in Italy.
The experienced Englishman was sent out on loan after being deemed surplus to requirements but it’s safe to say he’s made the most out of his time there.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer invested in Harry Maguire during the summer which all but put a nail in Smalling’s coffin, especially with Axel Tuanzebe returning from a successful loan with Aston Villa.
The former Fulham man could certainly still make a career for himself at Roma since he’s still in his peak footballing years so a deal makes sense for both parties.
It’s unlikely Solskjaer will turn down an offer and the sooner the lanky centre-back is off the club’s wage bill the better.
According to Di Marzio, next week could see a breakthrough in negotiations with Roma planning a €12m bid with an additional €3m in bonuses for Smalling.
Unfortunately Manchester United will always buy high and sell cheap simply due to their reputation and financial strength but it’s a decent deal when all things are considered.
Smalling probably won’t be missed but fans were also a little confused why he was being moved on ahead of the likes of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo as he was considered more reliable than the two.
