Manchester United great Edwin van der Sar has pinpointed what he feels is the main reason for the club’s poor form.
The former goalkeeper was beloved by many fans not only for his talent and consistently high performances but also for his leadership.
It appears Van der Sar unfortunately doesn’t recognise the same from the current crop of United players and it’s something fans resonate with.
Many had hoped Paul Pogba could become one while Harry Maguire is the latest to be tipped to become one yet it’s Ashley Young who’s the club’s official captain.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has opted for a rather young squad and so it’s no real surprise the inconsistencies of youth have carried into the on pitch performances.
According to ESPN, Van der Sar said: “I think for ourselves, when I came in the dressing room we had Ryan Giggs, you had [Paul] Scholes, you had [Rio] Ferdinand, [Gary] Neville and even Roy Keane at that time.
“So I think there’s always been strong characters. And I think for the last couple of years the strong characters have disappeared and [are] not making a difference anymore.”
It’s that lack of leadership that has seen reports flood in with Solskjaer reportedly interested in signing Juventus’ Mario Mandzukic.
It’s a transfer that kills two birds with one stone as Manchester United are also lacking attacking depth.
However, a deal remains someway to complete so it’s likely Solskjaer has to rely on his current crop of players.
Van der Sar himself has been linked with a return to United as the club are currently on the lookout for a director of football- a position he has admitted he would one day be interested in.
