David de Gea 5 – Saw Matty Longstaff’s shot late but would have fancied himself to save it. That was the only meaningful shot that came his way.
Diogo Dalot 5 – Offered very little and then came off with a groin injury. Not happening for the youngster at the moment.
Harry Maguire 6 – You would expect a player of his quality to look comfortable against Newcastle. Missed an absolute sitter just before half time.
Axel Tuanzebe 7 – The only redeeming aspect of this team. Put in a remarkably tidy performance in central defence.
Ashley Young 5 – Why this man still takes set-pieces is a mystery. Offers nothing going forward and too slow going backwards.
Fred 4 – The Brazilian needs to play some games for the Reserves. Absolutely no momentum or deftness to his play whatsoever.
Scott McTominay 5 – Had to play the senior midfield role and, despite some enthusiastic pressing, was far too wayward. Touch was awful.
Andreas Pereira 4 – Hard to know what this guy actually does aside from run about a bit. If anybody knows the answer, please do come forward.
Juan Mata 4 – You could see him demanding more from his teammates, pleading for the ball to come to him earlier – but it didn’t, leaving the Spaniard with no space to work with.
Daniel James 5 – Plenty of half-moments, bursting into channels here and there, but largely anonymous.
Marcus Rashford 4 – Genuinely did not see the ball for the first 45 minutes – not that this was his fault. Movement and touch work was rusty.
