Gabriel Martinelli inspired Arsenal to an impressive 4-0 win over Standard Liege in the Europa League

Team News – Player Ratings – Match Highlights
Match: Arsenal v Standard Liege
Venue: Emirates Stadium
Kick-Off (UK Time): 20:00 03/10/2019

Arsenal started brightly at the Emirates. They were stringing passes together and progressing well up the pitch. There was little in the way of opportunities with the first big chance coming at the other end. Standard Liege failed to capitalise on errors by Emiliano Martinez and Shkodran Mustafi.

But the Gunners soon hit back. Kieran Tierney impressed down the left flank on just his second start and whipped in a medium cross to the front post. It was an unusual pass but he must’ve seen the run of Gabriel Martinelli who stooped to head home from a tight angle.

It was a fine header by the Brazilian who was hungry for me. Martinelli picked up the ball down the left flank, cut inside, and drilled the ball into the far corner. Two goals in two minutes for the young forward.

Joe Willock almost a third just moments later but his volley looped over. But the Englishman needn’t have worried. It took just five further minutes for a deflected shot to fall at his feet. Willock’s first touch was impressive but his placed finish even more so.

3-0 inside 22 minutes and the Gunners were flying but seemed to set up shop after that. They kept the ball but barely threatened to explode and press forward for a fourth.

The second half began in a similar mood. Martinelli was hungry for his hat-trick and came close to sliding it in from a fine Reiss Nelson cross.

It wasn’t to be but the Brazilian continued to impress. He was slid in down the right side and Martinelli chipped a wonderful cross over the goalkeeper’s head for Dani Ceballos to volley home his first Arsenal goal.

Some of Arsenal’s first-team stars entered the fray after the hour mark. Nicolas Pepe came on to attempt to grab his first Arsenal goal from open play but struggled to make an impact on the match.

The game petered out in the closing period with the Gunners continuing to press but failing to find that fifth goal.

Here’s how we rate the Arsenal players:

Emiliano Martinez – 6

He’ll have busier matches in his career. Emiliano Martinez only had to make a couple of saves of note this evening but did well enough to keep his clean sheet.

Hector Bellerin – 6

It was a solid return to the team for Hector Bellerin. The Spaniard looked accomplished in his first start for the Gunners. Wearing the captain’s armband, Bellerin looked sharp moving forward but perhaps a little slow defensively.

Shkodran Mustafi – 6

Shkodran Mustafi made a couple of errors early on but wasn’t threatened enough over the course of the night.

Rob Holding – 6

He was fine. Rob Holding won’t have many quieter nights than this in his Arsenal career. It was a breezy performance for Holding who did well enough.

Kieran Tierney – 8.5

What a player. Kieran Tierney was excellent on the night, showing a tireless work rate and effectiveness at both ends of the pitch. The Scotsman was a constant threat down that left flank with a number of excellent crosses. He grabbed one assist but it could have been at least a couple more.

Lucas Torreira – 7

He grew into this one. Lucas Torreira started in the pivot role but looked a little uncomfortable early on. He just couldn’t keep possession and grew increasingly frustrated with himself. But that soon passed. The Uruguayan grew in stature as the game progressed and can be pleased with his second-half performance.

Joe Willock – 8

It was yet another excellent performance from Joe Willock. The Englishman drove his team forward and put in a shift defensively. He just has a habit of popping up in the box at the right time and can certainly find the back of the net. Another goal in the youngster’s emerging Arsenal career.

Sub: Matteo Guendouzi (74′) – 6

He did well enough.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles – 6

It was something of an audition for Ainsley Maitland-Niles playing further up the field. The Englishman did well enough but didn’t really carry the threat moving forward. He lost the ball a couple of times and wasn’t the most consistent passer but he didn’t do too badly.

Sub: Nicolas Pepe (67′) – 5

Tried a little too hard to break his duck from open play.

Dani Ceballos – 8.5

He really caught the eye on the night. Dani Ceballos capped a fine performance with his first Arsenal goal. The Spaniard dominated possession and glided around the pitch. He created chances and drove his team forward with the ball.

Reiss Nelson – 8

It was a much-improved performance from Reiss Nelson. The youngster looked sharp and up for the contest. He showcased his lightning pace but had the presence of mind to keep the ball and create chances at the end of it. This was probably his best performance of the season so far.

Sub: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (79′) – 6

Barely involved.

Gabriel Martinelli – 9.5

It was a brilliant night for Gabriel Martinelli. The young Brazilian was the best player on the pitch by some distance tonight as he grabbed two goals and an assist. Martinelli was sharp and smart in possession but what really impressed was his ability off the ball. He was always moving and stretching the opposition backline whether he was playing down the middle or out wide. He must have played his way into consideration for the Arsenal first-team with this performance.
