A first-half header from David Luiz was enough for Arsenal to secure all three points against AFC Bournemouth.

Team News – Player Ratings – Match Highlights
Match: Arsenal v AFC Bournemouth
Venue: Emirates Stadium
Kick-Off (UK Time): 14:00 06/10/2019

It was a quick start to the game for Arsenal. The transitions through the side were smooth as Arsenal’s pacy attacking trio interchanged and threatened. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang lasered a long shot wide of the post early on.

But Arsenal were getting more than their fair share of set pieces. It was from one of those corners that the first goal came. Nicolas Pepe’s whipped cross from the right side found David Luiz whose subtle header found the far corner. A soft goal for Bournemouth to concede but it was the Brazilian’s first in an Arsenal shirt.

Arsenal were really on top in the first half. Bournemouth couldn’t get out of their own half for much of the opening 45 minutes but the Gunners couldn’t do much more. Nicolas Pepe had a penalty shout turned down but it wasn’t to be and they went into the break one goal to the good.

AFC Bournemouth grew into the match in the second half. The visitors should’ve equalised when Callum Wilson rounded Bernd Leno but the forward looked to square the ball rather than shoot.

It was on Arsenal to kill the game and see out the 90 minutes. The changes came on in midfield and they did just that. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang came close to doubling Arsenal’s advantage late on but it wasn’t to be as the Gunners saw the match out to pick up the three points.

Here’s how we rate the Arsenal players and manager:

Bernd Leno – 7

No complaints from Bernd Leno. The German stopper did everything expected of him and will be pleased with that clean sheet.

Calum Chambers – 7.5

He did well enough. Calum Chambers was solid defensively and carried a threat moving forward with a couple of dangerous crosses.

David Luiz – 8

David Luiz stood out today. This was the kind of performance which Arsenal fans were expecting from the Brazilian when he joined the club. He obviously took the goal well but he showcased some excellent passing throughout and defended well enough.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos – 7

He can be pleased with his afternoon. Sokratis got caught out a couple of times early on but grew into the match as it went on.

Sead Kolasinac – 5

He was poor. Sead Kolasinac was the weakest link in this Arsenal back four and almost cost his side with a dreadful 15-minute spell in the second half. The Bosnian was lethargic defensively and slow to close down his man. David Luiz and Matteo Guendouzi did well to cover for him.

Granit Xhaka – 6

He was fine. Granit Xhaka didn’t have the busiest match of his career but just kept the ball moving along.

Matteo Guendouzi – 7.5

It was another eye-catching performance from Matteo Guendouzi. The Frenchman was full of energy and put in some good work at both ends of the pitch. He had a couple of excellent defensive clearances in the second half.

Dani Ceballos – 6

He’s played better. Dani Ceballos had a few good moments but didn’t see as much of the ball as he would have liked. He struggled to make an impact on the match and found himself a little too far from the midfield and the attack rather than linking them both together.

Sub: Joe Willock (74′) – 5

It wasn’t his best cameo. Joe Willock looked a little flat-footed and couldn’t get started.

Nicolas Pepe – 7

Nicolas Pepe did well today. The Ivorian grabbed an assist for David Luiz’s opening goal and looked sharp throughout the first half. He came close to grabbing a goal in the first half with a whipped shot but was just a whisker away from the top corner.

Sub: Gabriel Martinelli (63′) – 5

Gabriel Martinelli was perhaps a little too eager to impress in his cameo. The Brazilian was full of enthusiasm but just couldn’t get started.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 6

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang did well enough. He had some good touches and moved well and was unfortunate not to grab Arsenal’s second goal late on.

Bukayo Saka – 7

It was another lively Premier League performance from Bukayo Saka. The youngster was ful of energy all match long, constantly pressing and harrying his opponents. It didn’t translate to much in front of goal but Saka can be pleased with his performance.

Sub: Lucas Torreira (82′) – 6

He was fine. Lucas Torreira defended well enough in midfield.

Unai Emery – 6

The lineup was fine and Arsenal took advantage of Bournemouth’s inability to play from the back. However, Arsenal really should have made a bigger attempt to kill off the match in the first half. The Gunners seemed to sit back after David Luiz’s opener and it almost hurt them.
