It was a decent start to the match for Arsenal. The Gunners were on the front foot early on and won a corner inside four minutes after some good work from Nicolas Pepe. The Ivorian whipped the ball in as Granit Xhaka headed it across for Sokratis who was unmarked. The Greek defender hit his volleyed shot into the floor and the back of the net.
The Gunners were bouncing and had an identical opportunity just moments later. Pepe whipped in another corner for Alexandre Lacazette this time who flicked it onwards. This time, it was David Luiz who had stolen a yard and he made it 2-0 inside nine minutes.
The game looked ready for an Arsenal onslaught against a deeply disorganised Palace side. But that wasn’t the case as the Gunners took a few steps back and created little in the way of opportunities.
There was always the possibility that Palace would get back into the match and that soon happened. Calum Chambers brought down Wilfried Zaha in his own box and despite the original yellow card for diving, the decision was overruled by VAR and the visitors had a penalty. Luka Milivojevic made it 2-1.
The Gunners did create a couple of chances in the first half. Alexandre Lacazette forced a fine save from Wayne Hennessey before Nicolas Pepe came close with a low shot which was eventually ruled out for offside.
The second half continued the trend of the first. Palace grew into the match and soon found themselves level. Granit Xhaka allowed the cross to come in down the right flank and Jordan Ayew was left unmarked at the back post to head home. Both of Arsenal’s full-backs were caught well out of position.
Xhaka was the first man to be replaced for the Gunners. The club captain received a really poor reception from the fans before giving a similar reaction in response. The Swiss midfielder threw his shirt on the ground and headed straight down the tunnel.
The Gunners thought they’d grabbed the winner late on. Sokratis again launched a ball into the back of the net but again, VAR hurt the Gunners as it was ruled out.
Arsenal didn’t really look like scoring late on as this fiery and unusual match petered out. This could be a key moment for Unai Emery and Arsenal.
