It’s safe to say one of Manchester United’s most disappointing factors of the display against Arsenal was their lack of creativity or incisiveness.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men were held 1-1 at home in a match that was pretty much a must-win.
It’s also safe to say United’s inability to create chances had a lot to do with two of their front four not performing to standard.
Marcus Rashford wasn’t great but he wasn’t absolutely useless as he made constant runs and played in teammates and had simply failed to convert a good one on one opportunity.
The real culprits were Andreas Pereira and Jesse Lingard with just Daniel James almost singlehandedly carrying United’s attack.
The pacy Englishman has failed to impress since his purple patch of form over a year ago and there are serious question marks over his quality.
Pereira meanwhile is clearly not enjoying being shoved out wide and has not influenced matches as a winger at all.
Solskjaer’s solution is to either drop both for the likes of Mason Greenwood and Angel Gomes or to tweak the system a little to favour his current starting XI.
It’s difficult to imagine moving away from a 4-2-3-1 so if the former striker insists on using this formation then he must switch around Pereira and Lingard’s positions.
The 26 year old will likely benefit from a positional switch as it could spark him back to life.
It could also be argued that Lingard was never a playmaker and rather more of a second striker.
Pereira obviously isn’t the greatest playmaker in the world but he’ll certainly cause more damage centrally until Solskjaer can invest in a better player for the position.
The young Brazilian needs a set position to develop in and he’s running out of time to prove his worth.
Solskjaer’s whole 4-2-3-1 formation relies on a deadly playmaker and at the moment his current options are letting him down so to continue playing them is not the answer.
