Massimiliano Allegri has told Manchester United that he will only become the club’s next manager if he is offered the role within the next few weeks, according to reports.
Some reports have suggested that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, following a run of two wins from 13 Premier League games, could be sacked if Man United lose heavily to Liverpool on October 20.
Allegri, who won the Serie A title for five consecutive years with Juventus, has been out of work since the summer.
According to Gazetta Dello Sport, Allegri is interested in the position but wants the job sooner rather than later.
The Italian, it is claimed, wants as much time as possible to turn around the team’s fortunes this season, with United currently sitting two points above the relegation zone after nine games.
As a result, Allegri is unlikely to accept the job if it is offered to him in December.
This all seems quite outlandish, but the speed with which things have been happening at Old Trafford means that something like this happening is genuinely within the realms of possibility.
As detailed in a report from the BBC’s Simon Stone, who does not jump the gun on things like this, there is a feeling among the Old Trafford hierarchy that, should results fail to improve, Ed Woodward will have no choice but to push the button on Solskjaer – which would, regardless of how you feel about the Norwegian, be a terrible demonstration of how this club operates.
