David de Gea opted to sign a long-term contract at Manchester United after receiving assurances over the club’s determination to win silverware over the next few years, according to a report.
Man United confirmed on Monday afternoon that De Gea, following over a year of protracted negotiations, had penned a four-year contract with the option to extend for a further year.
The Spaniard is now the world’s highest-paid goalkeeper after securing a financial package worth £375,000 a week – a wage which could see him earn £93.75m in total if he stays until 2024.
According to the Times‘ Paul Hirst, De Gea signed the contract on the conditionality that United was serious about challenging for major silverware and would invest in the squad accordingly.
Moreover, De Gea is said to have felt a sense of personal debt to Solskjaer after the Norwegian stuck by the 28-year-old, publicly and privately, amid a poor spell last season during which he made howlers against Everton, Barcelona and Chelsea.
The future at Old Trafford is, of course, wildly uncertain, and there is absolutely no guarantee that the club will compete for silverware over the next few years.
But the fact that De Gea will be part of it makes me, and indeed every United fan, feel a bit safer.
