Marcus Rashford, Paul Pogba and Harry Maguire have been named in BBC’s ‘Team of the Week’ following Manchester United’s 4-0 thumping of Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Rashford confidently buried Man United’s opener from the spot before adding a third – seconds after Anthony Martial had scored – following a truly sensational pass from Paul Pogba, who added a second assist for Daniel James to cap off an unbelievably good second-half display in midfield.
At the back, Maguire was delightfully imperious on his debut, getting his wonderful big head on anything that came near him as Chelsea floundered after half-time.
They were all duly awarded a place in Garth Crooks’ opening ‘Team of the Week’ of the 2019-20 season.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka could also very easily merit a place in this team after what was another faultless display at right-back – one of total discipline and relentless energy.
There are several individuals who deserve talking about, but perhaps the most pertinent aspect of United’s showing at Old Trafford was that they did not drop off.
Towards the end of last season, United’s intensity would completely drop off after about 30 minutes. I’m not joking. If they weren’t ahead by the hour mark, there was no chance of anything happening. It was like flooring the accelerator and feeling nothing under the bonnet.
Yesterday, following a shaky start, United went up a gear, and it was ferociously effective.
