A publication in France has revealed how the club “hid their game” to win the race for Nicolas Pepe (via Sport Witness).
He was probably the signing of the window in terms of the quality of the player and the statement it made for the club.
Nicolas Pepe’s £72 million transfer saw him swap Lille for Arsenal as the Gunners beat out a whole host of other clubs.
The deal seemingly came out of nowhere and now, reports in France have revealed how Arsenal won the race.
France Football claims that Paris Saint-Germain were the first club to show interest way back in December 2018.
That cooled and by the summer, Arsenal were joined by Liverpool, Napoli, and Atletico Madrid with the Gunners the first to make a bid believed to be in the region of €40 million.
The report claims that Arsenal ‘hid their intentions’ throughout and made a decisive late move to ‘convince the Ivorian’ and land their man.
Nicolas Pepe is set to make his home debut on Saturday afternoon. The 24-year-old is Arsenal’s club-record transfer and there is a considerable amount of excitement about the deal. It’s obviously a coup for the club but these reports show just how well Arsenal did to get their man. Let’s hope that Pepe can live up to the hype starting on Saturday.
