It’s only taken Alexis Sanchez’ four pre-season performances for Manchester United supporters to have confidence in him returning to his sparkling best this season.
Alexis has been a standout performer on the tour of the United States, scoring twice whilst playing the role as sole striker until Romelu Lukaku returns from his holiday.
It’s obviously inevitable that the 29-year-old will get pushed out to the wing once Lukaku is back fit and firing after his impressive World Cup exploits this summer, but he’s more than capable to kick on and maintain the exciting form currently on show.
This summer has been Alexis’ first break after a season for nearly a decade, and it’s certainly shown as he’s looked like the energetic, gritty type of forward Jose Mourinho loves to have in his teams since returning.
After joining from Arsenal midway through the 2017-18 campaign, the Chile international struggled to get a grip of Mourinho’s strict demands and could only return two goals and three assists in 12 Premier League games.
With Man United set to be without a cluster of key names when they kick off their league campaign against Leicester City at Old Trafford next Friday, Alexis will need to step up and make himself counted to help Mourinho’s side avoid a slow start to what promises to be an intriguing title race.
Lukaku’s 27-goal return in his debut season at Old Trafford was mightily impressive, but he was the only player who was consistently providing goals and that must change this term if United are to improve and reach the level of Manchester City.
Alexis’ eye for goal, footwork and dribbling ability is frightening when he’s at his best and he’s looked like the player Mourinho signed from Arsenal during pre-season, so that player plus Lukaku and an in-form Juan Mata, Marcus Rashford or Jesse Lingard should be a recipe for success.
Anthony Martial is on his way out of the club after Alexis took his place in the left wing pecking order in January, so he needs to start firing to prove that the risk of losing an extremely promising young talent could be worth it.
And as far as what we’ve seen from the Chilean so far, there’s no reason not to be excited for the new campaign.
