Paul Scholes admits he's impressed by this player's composure in defence at Manchester United

Paul Scholes has been impressed by Victor Lindelof’s composure in defence since the Swede broke into Manchester United’s side recently.

Lindelof joined the Reds from Benfica for £30.7m this summer, but the 22-year-old didn’t start a Premier League game until November 18 in Man United’s 4-1 win against Newcastle United.

He had a shaky debut in the UEFA Super Cup against Real Madrid and made a massive error in United’s 2-1 defeat at Huddersfield Town after coming on as a first-half substitute for Phil Jones, allowing the Terriers a golden opportunity to score, which they did.

Since coming into the side against Newcastle, Lindelof has started every game, putting in a string of impressive performances.

“What’s impressed me most is [his composure] on the ball really,” Scholes told BT Sport.

“He’s made a couple of passes into a forward player which is always nice.

“But he’s there to defend and he’s defended well in the last few games.”

Lindelof’s first few games were peculiar. It was expected that he may be a little shaky defensively early on, adjusting to the faster pace of the Premier League. But while his defending lived up to that, his passing ability and composure was nowhere to be seen, too, only in very small glimpses.

His defending has vastly improved, perhaps helped by a spring forward in confidence. A strong tackle against Newcastle was clean, powerful and successful and got the Old Trafford crowd going, it undoubtedly helped with his confidence, as have consecutive good performances. We’re now starting to see a good defender in Lindelof, and one with obvious potential to improve.
