And many have thought that, with Manchester City set to dominate possession in similar fashion, Mourinho will adopt a similar strategy on Sunday.
But this would be a grave mistake: the onus is on Man United, eight points behind Man City, to push for a win and Guardiola’s men are not the type of side to have 33 shots and score just once.
With that in mind, here is a potential XI for Sunday’s clash with Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial all featuring in an attacking line-up.
The dye appears to have already been cast when it comes to the nature of this game: City with the possession, looking to probe any gaps, and United responding with unleashing counter-attacks whenever they can.
But Mourinho has never been one for going along with a script, and perhaps the best way to go about this game will be to shock the world and take the game to the league leaders instead.
Why not go hell for leather? With either the semi-fit Vincent Kompany or Eliaquim Mangala set to start, United could receive some joy by letting loose the likes of Rashford, Martial and Jesse Lingard – supplemented by Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia – bombing forward at will.
One thing is certain: inviting pressure from City’s dangerous front line could prove to be the worst possible approach.
