Arsenal’s number one target in the centre of defence appears to be William Saliba, the 18-year-old breakthrough star at Saint-Etienne.
The Gunners have reportedly agreed on personal terms with the player with an agreement between the two clubs proving a stumbling block.
Reports in France today suggest that an agreement is ‘getting closer’ with suggestions that it could involve Saliba remaining in Ligue 1 next season.
The news comes at a time when another French centre-back is being linked with a move away from the Emirates.
Laurent Koscielny has been the subject of speculation all summer long and reports in France suggest that he wants to end his Arsenal contract and head to Bordeaux.
The 33-year-old has one year remaining on his current deal but would reportedly like to leave on a free transfer this summer.
It’s doubtful whether Arsenal would let Laurent Koscielny do that. The Gunners’ captain put in an impressive season last year and is still a key player for the team. William Saliba’s arrival would fill out the squad slightly but there has been speculation that he would remain in France for another year. If that is the case, then getting rid of Koscielny next season would make far more sense.
