Manchester United are reportedly facing a race against time as they identify Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld as a backup to Harry Maguire should matters go wrong.
The experienced Belgian has been on the club’s wish-list for a few seasons now and it appears even Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has turned to him too.
The talented centre-back represents value in the market at a time when multiple clubs are overspending so it’s a surprise no one has bought him just yet.
United have struggled to see eye to eye with Leicester over the transfer of Maguire so it makes sense they would start looking elsewhere.
Alderweireld is a tried and tested warrior of the Premier League so Solskjaer could do far worse than him in the market.
According to The Telegraph, the Red Devils have made Toby one of their main backup options to Harry but they face a race against time as his £25m release clause expires this Friday, meaning finalising a deal for the latter may be accelerated.
Although there may be some truth, this report feels as though it’s just a method the club are using to warn the Foxes to accept their bid for the towering Englishman.
It could scare Leicester into not wanting to miss out on the fee they would get or even scare Maguire into forcing his way out of the club before United drop interest in him.
