Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong has called on his former Ajax teammate Matthijs de Ligt to join him amidst uncertainty over his future.
The centre-back has looked set to join multiple sides at various times over the summer with Juventus, Manchester United, Barcelona and PSG all reportedly coming close to his signature.
The Italian giants appear closest at the moment but recent reports claimed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side had a better shot than initially thought.
De Ligt would certainly improve United’s leaky defence but there are serious question marks over whether he would be convinced to join.
Solskjaer can only offer him Europa League football but there is the lure of reawakening a sleeping giants, should that appeal to him.
According to the Express, Frenkie said: “I’d like to see him [De Ligt] here, but I cannot decide.
“He has to make that decision with his family. When I saw Barca wanted me to play here, the decision was very easy.”
Manchester United fans were at one point incredibly hopeful of a move happening but once it became clear there would be no end to this transfer saga, they quickly lost interest.
There’s no telling where Matthijs will end up but if it’s at Old Trafford for some bizarre reason, it may help convince other current players to remain.
Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and David de Gea all reportedly want out but if Ole can convince them to hold on for one more season, United may reach their targets for the season.
