Manchester United fans may have something to get excited about after Benfica’s president has confirmed the only way Joao Felix will be allowed to leave the club.
The youngster has been one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s main targets according to reports but it’s been a difficult struggle to conclude any deal.
Felix is one of Europe’s most wanted players and it’s no surprise to see his name linked with United.
Solskjaer was said to be keen on bringing in an attacking-midfielder, right-winger and striker so the Portuguese star’s versatility and ability to play all three positions makes him invaluable.
Joao huge release clause has made any possibility of a deal being concluded incredibly difficult but the Red Devils have been offered some hope.
According to the Mirror, Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira said: “We sit down with players and they say ‘president, I can earn five million euros, president, do not make me stay here.’
“Joao Felix had a release clause of 60million euros and we realised after two or three games that we must increase it to 120million euros.
“But it is Joao Felix and his family who will decide if he stays. If someone bids 120million euros it is not worth dreaming that he will stay.
“We are trying everything to ensure he stays. But the only way is if we sell him and keep him another year.
“If not, Joao leaves. There is no room to negotiate further. He doesn’t want to. How will Benfica negotiate with someone after he is given a proposal of 6million euros after tax?”
Manchester United were said to be of those who offered a tonne of money to Felix so perhaps the president is referring to them.
It’s unlikely Ole has the budget to part with the €120m needed to sign him but perhaps unsettling the player will play in their favour.
The Norwegian has publicly stated a desire to sign young, talented players full of potential so Joao does fulfil his transfer policy.
However, United have been said to be looking at cheaper, more realistic options so perhaps a move won’t materialise.
