Sarri explains why Chelsea deserve to win the Europa League over Arsenal

Chelsea head coach Maurizio Sarri has claimed that his side ‘deserve’ to lift the Europa League trophy in Baku after already achieving a top-four finish in the Premier League.

There has been a lot of speculation around whether the Italian will still be at the club next season but the boss has secured a top-four finish and has guided his side to a major European final.

The Blues secured their place in the final in the most nail-biting way as Eintracht Frankfurt took the English side all the way to penalties.

Starman Eden Hazard slotted home the winning penalty in what could be his final appearance at Stamford Bridge.

Sarri, as cited on the Independent, has suggested that his side deserve to win in Baku because they have overcome a bad run of form to end the season on a high.

We played the first final against Manchester City and lost. So now we want to win. Our group deserves to win.

We were in trouble three months ago and, here in England, if you’re in trouble the level of opponents is very high and it’s not easy to overcome difficulties. We were able to do it. So now we deserve to win a trophy.

Getting to the final of the League cup, we had to play against Liverpool, against Tottenham, the finalists of the Champions League, then we played against the best team in Europe in the final, Manchester City. At this moment, the Premier League is the best championship in the world.

Chelsea have had success before in a penalty shoot-out against a German side when they took Bayern Munich to penalties in the 2012 Champions League final. The Blues won that time and they have now achieved success against another German team.

However, Sarri suggests there is no way to prepare for penalties as the reality of the situation is different when compared to doing it on the training ground.

There is no preparation for penalties because you can kick very well in the training ground and then the pressure is different. You need great personality. Great character. It’s really useless to try penalties.

Now we need to rest. Then we have 10 days to prepare for the final. We have to recover energy because we are really very tired.

Chelsea face Arsenal in an all-English final on the 29 May in Baku with a European title on the line.
