Manchester United’s big task ahead

It really has been a season to forget for Manchester United. One that saw two men attempt to take charge of the biggest club in the world and ultimately come to the same conclusion, that being the fact their needs to be a huge amount of change in terms of playing personnel.

You only have to look at the United’s end of season performances for evidence of this and had their fans visited a football betting site or two, it would have left them not only bemoaning their team but also lighter in the wallet.

That’s because with two matches of the Premier League season to go, United only had to deal with an already relegated Huddersfield and a Cardiff outfit that would go on to eventually suffer the same demoted fate.

This meant that with the race for a top four finish going down to the wire, United would have been confident of snatching the final berth from Tottenham and returning to Europe’s premier club competition next season.

While even though the fixtures against both Huddersfield and Cardiff looked incredibly easy on paper, it just goes to show that football matches are not played on paper and you still need to turn up and get the job done.

Something that the Red Devils have failed to do as of late and the fact that they picked up just one point from a possible six that were on offer, simply highlights the malaise that has set within the United camp.

Lacklustre performances from the likes of Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku have highlighted that the quick fix of big money purchases has simply not worked and now manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is going to have to start a huge rebuilding task.

Quite simply, the former Norwegian international needs to mould the squad into a group of players that actually will take pride in wearing the famous club crest and not just looking at Old Trafford as the opportunity for sizeable payday.

If they can get the two players mentioned above and Alexis Sanchez off the wage bill this summer, then it will free up some funds to have a proper crack at what is becoming an ever difficult transfer market to master.

While even thoughUnited have to do make do with playing in the Europa League next season, they will still undoubtedly be a welcoming prospect for a whole host of exciting young talent across the continent.

Therefore, there is still reason to be optimistic in the red half of Manchester and if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can freshen up the squad and more importantly make it one that he can actually call his own, then they will be primed and ready to bounce back.

Next season will be pivotal in where United go in the medium term, as quite simply they are too big to be not challenging for the titles. That said, just because you have a grand stature, doesn’t give you a divine right for success and now we will see the true measure of how good the manager really is.
