Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has remained optimistic despite Manchester United’s 1-0 loss to Barcelona on Wednesday night.
The two European giants clashed in the quarter-finals of the Champions League but it was hardly a classic.
United started the fixture poorly, conceding through an unfortunate Luke Shaw own goal but they managed to regain their composure.
Had it not been for a lack of clinical edge, Solskjaer’s men may have found themselves securing yet another comeback victory.
Despite all their positive play and attempts on goal, the Red Devils simply couldn’t find the net to take a goal back with them to the Camp Nou.
Ole: “We didn’t start great. They scored a great goal, there was great movement by Messi and Suarez and they’re fortunate that it comes off Luke and changes direction. It’s a blow but we settled well. We’re still in this tie.” #mufc [BT]

Ole: “We played against a good team. When you play against Barcelona you have to defend well. You might be tired when you get chances. There are positives to take and we’ll tighten up a few things. We’ll go there looking to score.” #mufc [BT]

Ole: “He’s (Messi) a fantastic player. We did as well as we could against him. We kept our shape well. It could have gone both ways. We didn’t hit the target and that’s one of the disappointing things. We’ll go there with work to be done but we will create chances.“ #mufc [BT]

Scott McTominay and Fred were the standout performers for Manchester United in midfield.
The pair were superb against PSG in the round of 16 clash and they carried that form into this fixture.
The duo have certainly given Ole a selection headache for when Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic return but one would imagine their performances will be rewarded.
Either way, Manchester United will need to be more clinical when facing off against Barcelona in the second-leg so it’s good news they will have the away goals rule on their side.
All they will need to do is score a single goal to even the tie with every goal after that basically counting as double.
