Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer singled out Scott McTominay for praise following his performance vs Barcelona.
The Scotsman was fantastic despite the 1-0 defeat, outperforming World Cup winner and teammate Paul Pogba.
McTominay has largely played a bit-part role for United so far this season but that display could convince his manager to feature him more regularly.
Solskjaer has mostly relied on a midfield trio of Pogba, Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic.
Scott could potentially take over from either one of the Serbian or the Spaniard in future matches.
According to Manchester Evening News, Ole said: “The boy’s developing every time he plays. He comes into training with a fantastic attitude and that’s the way to improve. Every game he plays he grows and grows.
“Today he was the one to take the ball down to settle us because we had to slow the game down, we were too quick to give the ball away and after 15 minutes I thought we settled and Scott, Fred and Paul, the three midfielders, did really well.”
McTominay wasn’t just a useful defensive option, he was actually equally impressive going forwards as well.
Though he was neat and tidy in possession, that didn’t stop him from spraying passes around in fantastic fashion.
His mobility was a welcome surprise too as he carried the ball forward and got into promising positions.
Although Scott wasn’t as brilliant under Jose Mourinho, the reason why he started to suffer was because of burn-out.
Hopefully Solskjaer can learn from his predecessor and not overplay the academy product even if he’s in fantastic form.
McTominay is still young which means he’ll tire quicker so he should be rotated in order to keep up his good performances.
