Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater was told by Maurizio Sarri at the start of the season that he would not play for the Blues this campaign.
Drinkwater, who was recently arrested on suspicion of drink driving, was informed by the Chelsea boss in August that he didn’t suit the Italian’s style of play and he should look for a move away while the transfer window was still open.
The midfielder was signed by the Blues for £35million in 2017 but hasn’t played a single minute of competitive first team football this season, with his only appearance coming in the Community Shield.
And according to BT Sport, Chelsea boss Sarri told Drinkwater that he would be surplus to requirements at the start of the season as he does not suit the Italian’s ‘Sarriball’ style.
He knows very well he has never played because in my opinion he is not suitable to my system, to my way of playing. I told him everything in August. He appreciated it, but he decided to remain, and so he knew very well the situation. I spoke with him in August, when the market was still open. I said to him he should look for something different.
Drinkwater featured 22 times for the Blues during an injury hit 2017-18 season following his move from Leicester.
