Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu has revealed just how close his side were to signing Paul Pogba before the player move to Manchester United.
The Frenchman joined from Juventus for a then world record fee and has since had a mixed bag of performances.
Despite Pogba’s fantastic ability, fans always feel as though there’s more to come from him and there have been those who’ve complained of his inconsistencies.
Bartomeu has publicly admitted his club were interested in the midfielder and that they were simply outbid by United.
Paul this season has been consistently linked with a move to Barcelona’s arch-rivals in Real Madrid which could spell trouble for the president’s team.
According to ESPN, Josep said: “In the summer of 2015, Paul Pogba was playing in Turin and we simply told Juve that, if one day they decide to sell the player, we would be interested.
“When they sold the player, they told us what the offer would have to be and we couldn’t afford that amount of money at the time.
“So he went to United, and he’s making them better as a team because he’s one of the stars of the world of football right now.”
Pogba seemed to put his troubles with Jose Mourinho behind him when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer first arrived as he performed to higher levels.
Supporters felt that they had finally gotten the player they thought their club bought and everything appeared rosy for a while.
Unfortunately Paul’s form tapered off and while that doesn’t help his ‘inconsistent’ label, it would be harsh to ridicule his quality.
Many of United’s players have struggled recently with some fans suggesting there’s a possibility they’re burnt out so the former Juventus man will have an opportunity to prove his worth soon once more.
