Even when your team wins the Premier League, it is advisable that you should always go out and improve your team.
Creating serious competition within the group will force and encourage the players to continue to perform to make sure that they retain their places in the team, and continue to challenge for honours.
Sarri clearly does not believe in this way of thinking, and as a result, favoured players continue to trot out the dross that we saw at Goodison Park.
Secondly, with regards to those players who are not the ‘favoured’ few – what is their motivation to continue to perform?
Gonzalo Higuain is a laboured shadow of the player that he used to be, and even having recovered from illness and with a recent hat-trick from Olivier Giroud, Higuain was straight back in against Everton.
Callum-Hudson-Odoi, who must surely be halfway-packed to Bayern Munich, deserved to start today, but Pedro, who had an absolute shocker, was in from the start and played the full 90.
Andreas Christensen, who has been majestic in his recent performances, again gave way to the accident waiting to happen that is David Luiz.
Where is the regard for good play? Where is the internal competition?
Mateo Kovacic was solid in the holding role in Kiev and was dumped on the bench to make way for the biggest waste of money in recent Premier League transfers, Jorginho. I can’t believe that I was thrilled when we beat Manchester City to get him!
As for Sarri himself, he continues to prove week in, week out that he cannot motivate and that he cannot pick a team on merit. Everton’s Marco Silva, for all his critics, saw that his team had weathered the first-half storm on Sunday, adjusted his tactics, and suddenly, we were chasing the game.
Sacking Sarri seems the easy way out, but something needs to be done and soon. These players do not fit his way of playing. We are facing a transfer ban, we will not be bringing in the players to fit his system, so what are we to do?
As soon as Richarlison scored, I had a sinking feeling, and unfortunately, that feeling has been coming more and more over this season.
Ross Barkley was the shining light today and no doubt he will be back on the bench when we return to action.
Two weeks to let this defeat rankle or perhaps a new coach to stir the pot and get us going again. At this point, I should be like Sarri – grab a cigarette, shrug my shoulders and blame the players.
However, that’s clearly not close to the truth, is it, Maurizio?
