Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed Romelu Lukaku is a doubt for Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers due to a foot injury.
The Belgian has scored braces in consecutive games against Crystal Palace, Southampton and Paris Saint Germain in recent times.
His performance against Arsenal, although wasteful in front of goal, was notable for its maturity in holding play up and linking with other attackers.
But Solskjaer, speaking at a press conference on Friday, claimed Man United would likely have to do without him on Saturday, but did add that Jesse Lingard and Ander Herrera are back in the squad.
“We’re still getting players back, they’ve been training better this week,” he said. “Jesse, Ander, they’ve been training. Rom’s got a sore foot so he’ll be assessed this morning to see if he can join in.”
“Phil Jones is back, so we’re looking stronger. Mason has been ill, so he’s not trained this week. He might be training this morning, so let’s see how he is.”
Solskjaer will be cautious about rushing players back – especially after what happened with Lingard against Liverpool – but he does, potentially, have the ability to call on his first choice front six for this huge game.
The combination of Lingard, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial as a front three feels somewhat necessary against a Wolves side which plays with an aggressive tempo. Herrera, too, comes alive in these games, and should allow for Paul Pogba to roam further forward with the same menace he exacted upon Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in this competition last month.
