Spot kick misses from two of Chelsea’s most prolific penalty takers, Jorginho and David Luiz, ensured that Maurizio Sarri’s wait for a first professional trophy continued.
Despite the scoreline, the game was not devoid of entertainment and controversy, with player power being exercised to the full extent of its definition when Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga defied Sarri’s instructions and refused to be substituted late on for penalty expert Willy Caballero. The Spanish keeper then went on to wink at the camera in a move that would prove all the more hubristic with every City penalty that flew past him.
In the 90 minutes, Chelsea defended stoically and the only real chance City created was ruled out for offside by VAR, but for all their efforts at the back, this left little opportunity to get forward and N’Golo Kante and Pedro were the only two players who could claim they should maybe have scored.
The penalty shootout, shrouded by the dispute between Sarri and Kepa just moments earlier was a routine affair for City who saw the Blues miss twice before scoring four out of their five penalties to secure back to back League Cup victories.
