Reports suggest that Arsenal have activated a clause to extend the contract of Nacho Monreal (via ESPN).
Historically, Arsenal haven’t been particularly successful at renewing the contracts of their key players beyond a few seasons.
The likes of Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez, and more recently, Aaron Ramsey have all been involved in contract disputes in recent years with the latter two failing to agree to a new deal.
Naturally, the Gunners have a number of players whose current contracts are due to expire at the end of the season including Petr Cech, Danny Welbeck, and Stephan Lichtsteiner.
Now, reports suggest that the Gunners have agreed on a new deal with another player who wasn’t on that list.
ESPN claim that Arsenal have activated a clause which will extend Nacho Monreal’s contract for a further year to 2020.
The Spaniard has made over 220 appearances for the Gunners since his 2013 move and it seems as if he could make a great deal more.
If these reports are accurate then it is good news for the Gunners. Nacho Monreal has been a fine player for the club in the last five years and carries a tremendous amount of experience with him. The 32-year-old has struggled with injury this season but still has a lot to offer.
